Kolb, Bradley Officially Out; Vicks Says He's Ready

POSTED: Friday, September 17, 2010, 12:44 PM

Quarterback Kevin Kolb and linebacker Stewart Bradley did not practice Friday and are both listed as out for Sunday's game against Detroit, Eagles coach Andy Reid said.

Both players had left the facility before practice began.

"They feel really great," Reid said of Bradley and Kolb. Reid said they have shown no signs of lingering symptoms. He said the players have done exercise, which is part of the evaluation process.

Reid said Kolb and Bradley had "passed the written part of the concussion test. Their next test is to visit with the doctor later today and see what the results are." The players will see Dr. William Welch.

Reid had said earlier in the week that Bradley was ahead of Kolb. "Bradley was there before Kevin at that point [to go see the doctor]," Reid said today. "Bradley has felt pretty good for a couple of days."

Michael Vick will start at quarterback, his first start since the final game of the 2006 season, for the Atlanta Falcons (against the Eagles, by the way). Mike Kafka will serve as the backup quarterback. Reid declined to say who the third quarterback is, only that there are several emergency options.

Reid was asked whether Vick needed to play more conservatively, given that Kafka is the lone backup.

"He has to play his game," Reid said. "He can't worry about all that."

Vick said it was "great to be out there all week with the first unit," something he'd never done as an Eagle. "I'm ready to go," he said. "I've had a full week of preparation, a lot of film study and a lot of gameplanning. It's time to go."

He described himself as "not too nervous."

“I think last week kind of broke the ice for me as far as getting the jitters out and going out there and playing when the game counted and it was on the line, and being out there full time," Vick said.

Reid said the biggest difference between Vick now and Vick when he arrived last summer with the Eagles is that he has gotten in better shape and is getting more acclimated to the speed of the game.

"He wants to be a starter in the National Football League," Reid said. "He wants to up his game. That's the approach he has taken with this whole thing. He's a competitive, competitive guy. It's been fun to watch."

Said Vick: “It’s been a long time since I felt this good physically and mentally. I’m just glad that I had a chance to work myself back into football shape and I’m very thankful that I had the opportunity to come back and play this game. So thankful for all of the people who helped get me in this position and put me in this position."

Reid said there were no other significant injuries to report. Everyone else on the injury report is listed as probable: WR Jason Avant (back), DE Antwan Barnes (wrist), RB Mike Bell (toe), G Nick Cole (knee), G Todd Herremans (ankle), T Austin Howard (back), LB Akeem Jordan (groin), DT Trevor Laws (oblique), P Sav Rocca (left hamstring).

He said he was still considering how the 45-man active roster will take shape, especially along the offensive and defensive lines.

***

The Eagles have elected a new player rep, right tackle Winston Justice, as they prepare for what is shaping up as an ugly battle with the owners. Justice said the team met with NFLPA representatives Thursday and voted to authorize the union leadership to decertify if necessary, as a tool to possibly foil a management lockout.

"I think we need to get behind the head of the NFLPA (DeMaurice Smith)," Justice said. "I think we need to be unified."

not a surprise....the only doubt was andy's stupid game of pretending that they might play....and nobody was fooled....after the Eagles botched the concussion issue during the game you knew the NFL and Eagle attorneys were never going to let them play.....the media, the Lions, the players , the fans all knew they were not playing..but poor old andy thinks he is smarter than everyone so in his little lay world he put out the usual Reid spin

True dat, nuggett. But Reid had to save his pride by pretending Kolb and Bradley might possibly somehow play Sunday. Had he admitted at the beginning of the week that they had a snowball's chance of playing, he would have also been admitting how he botched the handling of the concussions when they happened. And as we know, Reid never admits he did anything wrong. ("It's on me" is not an admission of doing anything wrong.)

Great weekend to watch 2 big laughs of the NFL. McBOZO the CLOWN will waddle, call un needed timeouts to catch his breath, and have that stupid, mouth open look on his face while looking to sidelines for what to do. CAKE in the FACE bow wow "BANG BANG" VICK will have 2 interceptions, 9 for 27 completions, 53% QB rating and 2 fumbles while carrying the ball 1 handed.

I wanted #5 gone, but know better than to claim stake to Kolb...worthless. I'll take Vick, at least he is far more exciting to watch. What...you think the Birds are going anywhere anyway...wtf are you smokin' son?! BTW, next time you wanna play the "i'm not here, but in afghanistan card...slap yo'self boot." You have the audacity to play the card of a vet with your daily moronic comments and claims i.e. Davud Herndon over Halladay etc...Unlike you, I AM a true Vet and my location is none of your business...just glad I have access to the internet once in a while. Don't know how the Eagle organization can hold their heads up. Plus they will lose anyway. How easily fans have seemed to forgotten what he did. SAD. Animal killer first then on to people!

you gotta think Reid secretly wants Vick to have a bad game. Best case scenario for Reid is Vick has a poor game and Eagles manage to eek out an ugly win. things will get very interesting if Vick throws 300 yds, rushes for 100 and has an all out stud day.

Has it not dawned on anyone that Wolf is just an ULTRA, obsessed fan of Kolb and will say all sorts of nonsensical things just because? Wolf isn't the idiot, just obsessed, but anyone who tries to respond to Wolf with an ounce of sense is the idiot.

Uncle wolf, you might be hurting your nephew's feelings. Yesterday he said he didn't want his idol to play. Then he said he didn't want him to play the rest of the year. I said, of course, that there would be no pressure on either of the lads if KK assumes his normal spot on the bench. And lo, look at young wiff's 1:31 post today. All the pressure is "magically" on Vick. It's gotten sad Unc, wiff has spent years pleading and lying trying to convince the masses that KK is the savior. Now he is pleading that KK not play at all. Uncle Wolf, it has happened, wiff has succeeded in arguing with himself! Umm, new meds perhaps? Will that help? Family intervention? Counciling? Electro-shock therapy? Voodoo doll? Whatever you do, the lad has gone over the edge and become a full fledged schitzo. He is in dire need of help. Hope you can assist him. I'm worried I won't have someone to beat to a bloody pulp every day. How I would miss that. Aah, that's life though.

Gotta laugh at all the talk coming from Reid that "Kolb is absolutely our #1 QB", "Vick is definitely the backup", "bla-bla-bla..."

Albeit, he'll be facing a Lions team starting their own backup QB and they're also a team with a good front four but little else on defense, but if Mike Vick has a big day leading the Eagles to a big win against Detroit, there WILL BE a QB controversy. Not a good thing, not bad thing; just they way it is.

Man i just realized how to put it to words about how vick is treated in the sports world. Vick is so good that he always is under a microscope in that they really expect him to be superman! I'm not saying he shouldn't beat the lions but if they lose and he has a avg. game they will jump all over him oppose to manning or brady in that situation. It can clearly be the defenses fault and they will still blame vick. What they do is exploit his failures in way that he must not be good if he doesn't do good. Just like preseason Vick threw 3 ints but so did manning, romo, and palmer but did you hear about it? This is a fact in madden(yes I'm a video game head) for the past couple of years vick has been in the game they have his carry rating @45 now thats 10 points worst than david carr but the reason I use D.carr as my ex. because he fumbled over 60 times in his career 21 in one season but the highest vick ever had was 11 even Brees has had more than that. But superman got caught fumbling to much in 2005 and it was exploited as if he can't hang onto the ball. What I'm saying is the media controls your preception of a person, why do you think vick is not that great of a passer in your sight and you clearly saw him make extremely accurate throws against the packers, because the media propaganda has you in illusion so what you see isn't real. Subliminal msgs- he's an athlete (not a qb), they had to dumb down the playbook (instead of Vick hasn't really practiced the first team offense as focal point), or he's not very accurate (even though he hasn't threw for any more picks than anyone else you can name) If B. Farve is accurate ok i'm accurate. Man give me a break

This is what i honestly don't understand and about people in the u.s. and around the world.. your mad at mike vick for fighting dogs but there's people killing other people around the world.. so i get this vibe that if your dog was in the street along with a human as a truck comes, you would to choose your dog... why?? not to be cruel or anything because i have had dogs and never made them fight.. but a humans lives more than a dog and your more likely to lose your dog than a human.. people shouldn't treat dogs as if they were human.. donte stallworth killed a human but was only sentenced to 24 days in prison but michael vick serve a two year sentence?? people forgive the man a chance.. it could have been your love one sitting right next to you.. nothing against donte stallworth at all.. just a prime example.. you cant take vick's talent away from him... i great athlete.. and he's number one for most hated athelete.. c'mon man..

How many of you, or your kids did something beyond stupid when you were younger and got another chance...how many of you that keep harping on this even donate a dollar to help animals.......we all know what this really is about and it is time for you to grow up and give the man a chance to redeem himself. Give up with the Vick comments/jokes, they were apropriate 3 years ago, they ain't now. The guy committed a henious crime and paid the debt that the guys YOU vote for deemed suitable. If you think Vick should no longer be in the NFL then DO something about it, vote for stronger judges who will deliver tougher sentences. Don't come on here with 2 bob comments about stuff that happened years ago... you all act like your high and mighty, lets put your life under the microscope and see how you hold up, guess what? YOU AINT PERFECT EITHER.

He made a mistake, paid the price and appears to be doing the right thing now... deal with it.

PS Eagles kill the Lions... get well Stu & K2 we need you guys.

PPS Reid says Bradley is ahead of Kolb because he needs Bradley more.

PPPS I think K2 should be given at least this season to prove himself, Vick should get a shot elsewhere. I love watching him run but I grew up watching #12 do it so its in my blood... I also grew up watching Reggie, Clyde & Jerome, I miss those days...

    Go Eagles!

PPPPPPPS Ernie (Simms), you finally get to 1-28 or whatever it is on Sunday! W00p beers are on you!

@c.love20 well said man... we live in an imperfect world and from time to time we all make bad decisions, some far baderer than others (<--bad grammar intended to keep the trolls reading). I do not and never will condone Vicks actions but I do accept he made a mistake, paid the price, showed remorse and certainly give him the benefit of the doubt unitl he proves otherwise.

Unfortunately Vick is an easy target for people with a low IQ or the inability to form a thought more than once every 5 years... those same people are only just realising that Rich Kotite was not better than Buddy Ryan.

To all of you genuine Eagles fans out there that will be cheering the team on through thick & thin.. I'm with you brothers, we're in this together! GO EAGLES!

The guys a gamer too... for good or bad this aint the same league where Troy (*spits on the star*) Aikman can get up in the SB and carry on to win it... we have 'protocols' now... (*spits on the star again*). I understand that though... Stew would have stayed in but it may not have been in his best interests. The flip side is I've seen lots of boxers act like Stew and go on to get up and win the fight...

The bigger question is.. Can Andy & M2 put either Vick or K2 in a better position to win? Thats means...

For Vick.. Spread the offence & roll him out
    For Kolb.. no Vick

For both.. Timeouts taken when actually needed.

Unfortunately Reid will play to all of Vicks weaknesses. He will keep him in the pocket, take away his legs and have him "keep firing" even when his passes fall off the mark.

I think the only thing that would shock me more is if Andy had a 31 yard Vick run called back because he wanted to talk to Vick about not running as he wouldn't be able to get 3rd & 4.

Don't get me wrong, Andy (and Donovan) have brought this club more success than I ever remember (although I loved Buddy's time in Philly) but game management >_< Cant we chip in and get him on a course?

Superman will light it up against the Lions this week and then bust a nut all over Lonewolf's mom.

Wolf 4.... even you people are not giving the respect to Trent Cole.... He is the present and future of this franchise.. Why you people dont give what he deserves...for a 5th rounder he is doing a HELL of a Good Job.... and he doesn't come with the drama that the majority of the players have.... you give more to Bradley who in my view is way overrated...

Someone here sure isn't the brightest crayon in the box! Because people don't want dogs killed or hurt that means they prefer dogs over people??!! Pretty dumb thinking. I for one don't want dogs or people hurt or killed and will do what I can to save both.

I certainly would never hire someone who mutilated animals or people. I would much rather lose and be able to hold my head up.Again,I am very embarrased by Vick and the Eagle corporation. What happened to all the work Vick and the Eagles promised to do in helping to save abused animals?

Michael Vick never acknowledged he made a mistake, paid the price or showed any remorse. He was just sorry he got caught and had to go to jail. By the way, I am a college graduate and in business for 35 years. There is nothing wrong with my thinking and most people I know who were and remain sickened by Michael Vick and his actions. He is the animal.

Judigriffi, no one cares that you went to college, apparently it didn't help much, you say Vick never apologized, never shown remorse, or paid for his crime, and then you top that off by saying the Eagles haven't done anything to prevent animal cruelty. What world do you live in. I am a lover of dogs and owner, also I volunteer a lot of my time to two local shelters, doesn't mean that I am not capable of forgiving, I may never forget but I can certainly forgive. You really need to check your facts and I doubt very seriously you are the big dog lover you claim to be, if so you would already know the statements you just made are false.

Thank you Phillygirl, your comments are always right on. It's time to move on from this nonsense, enough is enough.

If MV demonstrates he can consistently move the ball downfield, Andy Reid won't hesitate to use him in the future. He's a veteran player and he does have a positive track-record in the NFL. Andy's #1 priority is to put the players on the field who he believes give him the best chance to win football games; his job depends on him making these decisions successfully more times than not. If the head-coach feels MV gives the Eagles the best chance to win, then he will play. Everything else is BS.

Smart move by Jeffy and Banner to cook up this 50th anniversary celebration, so they can cash in on vintage kelly green jersey sales. Why else would they subject themselves to the constant reminder that the team hasn't won in FIFTY YEARS, unless there was a buck to be made? This income will help to offset the lack of playoff revenue this season!

Vick smashed live dog's skulls into cement to kill them. Vick hung dogs. Vick electrocuted dogs. Vick used kidnapped pets as bait to train his dogs. Anyone who is so weak they need to root for that needs to examine their own life to see what is missing. Stop rooting for laundry, step up and demand that the person wearing the jersey be worthy of your adulation.

Read the earlier entries,Charmaine. Whether someone has a college degree is important to someone here. I agree . Myself,I find it unimportant in this context.
