Jags kicker calls DeSean a 'punk'

Jaguars kicker Josh Scobee took to Twitter to criticize Eagles wideout DeSean Jackson. (Associated Press)

Should Vince Young start Sunday if Michael Vick can play but is not quite 100 percent?
Yes. Young showed he can win games when Vick is not able to go all out.
No. Vick at 80 percent is better than Young at 100.
Why not start Vick and play Young only at the end if the game is on the line.

Andy Reid said Monday that he wasn't pleased that DeSean Jackson took a taunting personal foul penalty that negated a 50-yard pass play Sunday night against the New York Giants. (He also didn't agree with how the penalty was assessed. More on that later).

But the Eagles coach didn't exactly criticize the brash Eagles receiver as others have after Jackson flipped the football at Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell and drew an unsportsmanlike penalty.

Jaguars kicker Josh Scobee, for instance, called Jackson a "punk" on Twitter after the play happened.

"DeSean Jackson is a punk. #growuputinybastard," Scobee wrote.

He added with his next tweet: "Relax people. He's just a punk, which to me means he doesn't respect anyone or anything around him. Therefore, I don't respect him."

Scobee later apologized for his characterization of Jackson.

"Shouldn't have called DeSean Jackson that, I used the wrong words to try and make my point," he wrote.

Reid was asked about balancing Jackson's histrionics with his sometimes-great production. The receiver finished with six catches for 88 yards and returned one punt 51 yards.

"I'm not going to sit here and tell you I was happy about a penalty," Reid said Monday after the Eagles' 17-10 win over the Giants. "I wasn't happy about that. The thing I appreciated was he came out with that attitude we all love as far as loving to play the game. He was fired up and ready to go and that part I did appreciate."

As for the penalty, Giants defensive tackle Linval Joseph was also called for illegal use of the hands on that play. The officials ruled that the penalties were off-setting and that the down was to be re-played. Many, including Reid, believed that because Jackson's penalty occurred out of bounds that it should have been marked off after the 50-yard gain.

"It doesn't make sense," Reid said. "I was told it was called correctly."

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello wrote in an email, "That is the rule and it was applied correctly. The penalties offset and nullify the play."

Here's the rule as provided by the league office:

"Article 1 - If there is a double foul (3-11-2-c) without a change of possession, the penalties are offset and the down is replayed at the previous spot. If it was a scrimmage down, the number of the next down and the necessary line is the same as for the down for which the new one is substituted.
15 YARDS VERSUS 5 YARDS
Exceptions: (1) If one of the fouls is of a nature that incurs a 15-yard penalty and the other foul of a double foul normally would result in a loss of 5 yards only (15 yards versus 5 yards), the major penalty yardage is to be assessed from the previous spot."

Reid, who is on the competition committee, was asked if the rule needed to be changed.

"I'm going do some more research on it now that it's over," Reid said. "I didn't understand it when I was out there. They explained it to me well. It's one of those that you kind of raise your eyebrow to."

between that play and the continued botched punt returns where he loses yards (I guess you take the good with the bad) there is no way the Eagles sign him long term. This was their plan from the beginning, to get all they can value wise on the cheap rookie contract. Now Desean is making it easy for them now that some public sentiment is against him. Isnt Twitter great, I love all the people that put their foot in their mouth and then have to try to explain themselves, makes for great entertainment.

DeSean IS a immature punk!!!!! Take off the homer shoes people. How many stupid punk plays does this guy have to make to open some people's eyes? Cost the team a 50 yard gain just because you got the mentality of a 15 year old? Please!

DeSean needs to put on his big boy pants and man up! Enough of the BS, he'll get his $ since that all he cares about. What a shame that was on national TV.

as anyone who has seen my posts, I'm no homer and regulary rip Phillies and Eagles misdeeds .. having said that I respect talent and would have kept T.O. over Reid and McNabb, and would keep DeSean over no-talent "quality human beings" ..."nice guys" go to playoffs and lose (see, e.g., McNabb, et al.) , jerks win (See, e.g,, Jordan ,Kobe, Belichek, Parcells)

punk or no punk, he backed it up yesterday, and yes Reid needs to get him to grow up, or he will end up as another washed up T.O.

out here in the NY area you can't beat a Monday when both the Jets and Giants are showing their true colors and going in the toilet

I don't love Reid, but he got the job done yesterday with a backup quarterback against a very overrated Giants team.

If it looks like a punk, walks like a punk and talks like a punk... guess what?? It's a punk. Therefore DeSean is a punk. Someone end his season/career and break his leg/legs.

This whole thing is so ridiculous. It's ridiculous that Jackson has to flip the ball at a coach on the sideline and then dance like he just won the Super Bowl when his team was 3-6 at the time. Clearly a punk move. It's ridiculous that the gain wasn't acknowledged because of a weird glitch to the rule. It's ridiculous that as a society we've become so "sensitive" that the NFL has to penalize players for something as benign as shooting off their mouth a little after making a nice play. It's ridiculous that an idiot kicker on a team with a worse record than the Birds' thinks anyone should care about what he says. I don't agree with the fact that it is a penalty, but because it is, I agree that DeSean is a punk for doing it. It's unneccesary and selfish and also because the Eagles are 3-6, now 4-6 and not in any position to really be taunting anyone.

Tolerance for this kind of garbage is the #1 reason Andy Reid SHOULD be fired. You can never win for long without any standards or character. DeSean Jackson is arguably one of the top 5 athletes in the NFL (Mike Vick #1) other than his great individual plays he adds NOTHING to the rest of his teammates. Truly great players like Michael Jordon help to raise others...DeSean, who does he raise!

Then I would ask Mr. Aiello, "Just when is the play over? If it isn't over after Jackson steps out of bound, when is it? What if Jackson waited 15 or 20 seconds later to taunt the Giants sideline? Would the penalties offset? NFL officiating can be best described as 'A pack of lies agreed upon'."
