J.A. Happ not begin the season with the intention of collecting individual awards, but he was deeply honored by one announced today.

“It feels really good to have guys that you play against vote for you,’” Happ said after winning the Sporting News National League Rookie of the Year. The award was determined by a panel of 338 major league players. Chicago White Sox third baseman Gordan Beckham won in the American League.

“It’s kind of the ultimate validation, really,” he said.

Happ remains a candidate for the actual rookie of the year award, given next month. The lefthander, went 12-4 with a 2.93 ERA in 35 games in the regular season, striking out 119 in 166 innings, with two shutouts.

“J.A. wasn't the typical pitching prospect because he didn't necessarily put the numbers up on the radar gun," Orioles scout Bob Szymkowski, who signed Happ with the Phillies in 2004, told Sporting News. "Most times, he threw 86 to 88. But Jay had very good mound composure and competed very well. His best qualities were a very deceptive delivery in terms of his arm slot and the ability to mix all of his pitches and locate them on the perimeter of the strike zone. While he didn't have a power approach, he still had a great feel for pitching."

We reported the other day that the Phils plan to use Pedro Martinez in a potential Game 6, and the righthander remained on track for that by throwing a bullpen session today.

Cliff Lee would also be on full rest Friday, but the team’s plan---which, of course, is always subject to change--is to use Martinez.

Nice to see a guy like Happ win this award, someone who I saw come up through AAA here in Allentown. I was at his 7 inning no hitter and it's great to see he's succeeding at the ML level.

I'm really glad we didn't let Happ go during the trade deadline. He's exactly the type of guy you'd like to have in the middle of your starting rotation for a decade or so. Congrats, J... you've earned it!

And to think he began the season in the bullpen? ... What's more, to think Chan Ho opened the year as a starter, especially considering how well he's pitching in relief.

That is awesome. What an honor for a pitcher. The start of more good things to come in the next couple of weeks...

Congrats to Happ! What a great day this is: Happ in Philly instead of Toronto; Lee in Philly instead of Cleveland. Too bad Amaro won't get GM of the year. The national voters will assume Amaro just took Gillick's team and made sure the wheels didn't fall off. No national credit will be given for getting Ibanez, Lee, Martinez, (and Bako!).

What a future: Lee, Hamels, Blanton, Happ, and Kendrick in the rotation. The starting 8 are all in their prime (well, they can slowly work Michael Taylor into Ibanez' spot). If Lidge can return to form, the only thing Ruben needs to do is replace Stairs and Buntlette with people who can pinch-hit with some success.

And to think that Hamels is not in the bullpen!

Not just getting Lee, but getting him for 4 guys who would have never been starters in Phillie Uniforms! Amaro was great this year. I know people have had some issue with not improving the bench, but they're weren't a lot of guys out there.

@ jman "What a future: Lee, Hamels, Blanton, Happ, and Kendrick in the rotation." I'd say swap Kendrick for Drabek...... Kyle will be in the Phillies starting rotation in 2010. How exciting is that?

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Follow him on Twitter here.

Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
