Halladay and agent in Philadelphia UPDATED
Andy Martino
UPDATE, 3:04-- The plot thickens: Foxsports.com has added that the Phils are in talks regading a potential three-team deal that would send lefthander Cliff Lee to an unnamed club. This makes sense for a number of reasons:
--Lee is owed $9 million next year, and the Phils need to clear payroll to sign Halladay.
--Lee will be a free agent after this season, and if he tests the open market the Phils would find it difficult to re-sign him, given their already robust payroll.
--Acquiring Lee may net the Phils some of the prospects requried to complete a deal, without having to give up players like pitcher J.A. Happ and Kyle Drabek, outfielders Domonic Brown, Michael Taylor and Anthony Gose.
UPDATE, 5:03pm
Cliff Lee's agent, Darek Brauneker, says he has not heard anything from the Phillies, Blue Jays, Mariners or anyone else today.
Multiple reports--SI.com, I believe, was the first to confirm it--have Halladay and Lee involved in a three-way that would send Lee to Seattle. A bunch of other names are surfaced, but reports are conflicting--some have Domonic Brown going to Toronto, while others have it as Michael Taylor. Pitcher Phillippe Aumont would reportedly be going to Toronto from Seattle. It should be noted that none of this is confirmed. We know that both the Jays and Phils liked Brown more than Taylor in July.
Brauneker has spoken with Lee today. "He is obviously aware of the situation,' Braunker said. "There must be something to it."
Brauneker, understandably, treaded carefully when asked if Lee was disappointed. "He certainly enjoys being in Philadelphia. There was not much for him not to enjoy."
The Phils and Lee engaged in preliminary talks about a contract extension last week. "We had a positive dialogue," the agent said. "All of the dialogue has been very positive on both sides."
Lee wants an extension starting at $23 mil per year, which the Phils balked at. Long term, the three way deal probably allows them to keep happ, drabek, and blanton. RG
I'd keep both for the one year and accept the fact that I'd lose one or the other after this upcoming year. davekrieg

nervous... palmyra21- Lee would go to bring in prospects Toronto wants. Deal hinges on Halladay signing extension with Phillies. bird11
Which would you rather have (assuming the Phils can't get both): Lee for a year with no guarantee he can be re-signed, or Halladay with an already-extended contract? I'm still hoping for both, though. DDiceRC
I talked to a guy who knows one of the general managers' high school friends, whose cousin is married to someone who once read a book by Bill Gate, and SHE said that it might be blanton, happ and one of the big two prospects in exchange for Halladay and a flock of (real) blue jays for fairmount park lefty1117
Getting Hallady would be great, but less excited by it if it means losing Lee. Hallady-Hamels-Happ-Blanton is sort of a wash with Lee-Hamels-Happ-Blanton. Except if we lock Hallady up, and are assumin we can't lock Lee up, or won't be able to afford to lock him up to... DCExpat

Why trade Lee to get Halladay? Doesn't make sense. Lee is owed less next year than Halladay. Then they could let Lee walk and sign Halladay as a FA next year. scootch
Lee is looking for 23 million a year for the next 5-6 years. If trading Lee to another team (Seattle would be it) means we get Halladay for cheaper over 5 years, then so be it. Ace for an Ace and we still get to keep some of our best prospects (Seattle would satisfy that portion). Plus a sinkerballer in this ballpark is absolute HEAVEN! Either way with Lee/Halladay at 1-2 or Halladay 1, Hamels 2, we are still the best team in the National League..unless you are scared of the Brewers and Randy Wolf.... ESFjellin
What is the point of trading for Halladay if you weaken the club by sending Lee away? Trade Joe Blanton, sign Hallasay to an extension and play next year with Lee on the last year of a deal. The Reddgie
veritas1325, I'm with you 100%. Get rid of Hamels. I only hope that it's NOT true about the possibility of trading Lee for Halladay. No sense in that move at all. Can't wait to find out what happens!!! Valley Girl
Is HALLADAY YHAT MUCH BETTER THEN CLIFF LEE ? LEE WAS PERFECT IN THE POST SEASON ! thin slice of life- there's no way they can have a rotation of halladay, lee, hamels, blanton, and happ. one or two will go in any of these trades. unless RAJ gives up the farm. if they get halladay, and lose lee, it's a lateral move.
