Halladay leaves after two innings

POSTED: Sunday, May 27, 2012, 3:24 PM

Is it time to panic about Roy Halladay’s sore right shoulder?
Yes. This is Negadelphia.
No. He is the rock of this franchise.
Maybe. I’m too nervous to decide.

ST. LOUIS -- What started as the most pleasant of series for the Phillies took a seriously wrong turn Sunday when Roy Halladay had to leave his start against the St. Louis Cardinals after just two innings.

The team announced in the fifth inning that he left as a precaution because of right shoulder soreness. He will be reevaluated in the next couple of days.

Halladay, 4-4 with a 3.58 ERA coming into the game, labored through the first inning, throwing 26 pitches and allowing his second grand slam of the month, placing the Phillies in a 4-0 hole. Yadier Molina hit the two-out grand slam after the Cardinals had loaded the bases on two singles and a walk to David Freese.

The grand slam came on a 92 m.p.h. fastball. Halladay returned in the second inning and retired the Cardinals in order on 10 pitches, but it was clear something was wrong when lefthander Joe Savery started warming in the bullpen as the Phillies hit in the top of the third inning.

Halladay's ERA now sits at 3.98, the highest it has been this late in a season since 2007 when he was with Toronto.

It's clear that Doc has been struggling all year with this which explains his higher era. Phil's need to sign Hamels now more than ever if this is a shoulder injury that could shorten Halladay's career.

My post in response to beegal on May 24:

"@beegal, you may have something there...it certainly doesn't look like Doc has the same sink or movement on his pitches. His arm slot looks a little lower to me and from having pitched for 23 years I can tell you it's usuaully a sign that something is not right, stiff back, weakness/pain in the shoulder, etc. I've been there a few times."

I know I'm going to take some flak for this again, but this latest post is only more evidence that as a former pitcher and a therapist with 30 years in sport medicine, I know what I'm talking about when it comes to injured pitchers.

I hope Doc is not hurt badly but my gut feeling given his velocity drop, arm slot and results of how his pitches (don't)move crisply tells me it's his rotator cuff but of course without access to his MRI who knows. It could just as easily be a labral tear. Either way, I don't like it and I don't think this is a short term problem for Doc or us. Maybe this just isn't supposed to be our year?

Is this diagnosis just like your diagnosis for Hamels this past offseason, Dr. Quinn? Whether he's injured or not, get over yourself, Chicken Little.

For anyone wishing to contribute, I'm taking up a collection so we can by Mark a life.

Probably another example of Uncle Cholly ruining Dave Montgomery's most prized horse by allowing him to stay in games with exhorbitant pitch counts.

He could use the rest. There's an article from today that says "Halladay remains confident" so I doubt today's problem is part of any lingering injury.

Looks like Cloyd will get his major league debut. I hope it's not too serious with Halladay, but he's way off this season.

Shoulder soreness varies, but as your average Phillie fan thinks he is done. Oh my god, the sky is falling. If, like James said, it is either a slight tear in the labrum or the labrum is simply inflamed, 2-4 weeks should do the trick. If the labrum has more than a slight tear, 60 day DL. If the Rotator Cuff is affected, all bets are off. If he was throwing 92 MPH, chances are very high that it is a mild-average strain of the labrum, which doesn't necessitate Phillie fans' dire straits. The team is 4 games out, now 4.5 and it is May...relax people, deep breath.

Hmmmmm.Shoulder? How about the team's attempt to save Halladay the embarrassment of wimping out on another hot day? Any team that hides so much from the public (Utley? Hpward?) is more than capable of some PR deception...don't ya think?

So, we were right after all. It wasn't a joke, like Dubee and the media made it out to be when we questioned the lack of velocity. How does Charlie feel know when he left him continue pitching after he faced 9 batters in Atlanta? Charlie would have left Molina in the game, most likely, and Waimright would probably be pitching right now. Get Cholly outtahere before he destroys the whole team.

I like Toyotas but this dealer is simply an idiot. Guy gets a sore shoulder and his career is over, right? Folks should have to pass an IQ test to be able to get online.
And no it wasn't just the heat, kilo. Have you been watching this year?!
I think sonnybuoy hit the nail on the head. Uncle Chol has no idea how to handle pitchers.

Burhime if you are saying Blanton and Kendrick are better than Lee you are completely nuts. Once Worley is healthy they won't be better than him. And if Doc doesn't miss any time they aren't better than him. Man a guy gets a sore shoulder and people go crazy.

This was inevitable for Doc. No way he pitches the way he has this year without an underlying explanation. I'm wondering if his leaving the team for "personal reasons" could have been a secretive attempt to find an answer. Hopefully it is not that serious and Doc will take the time he needs to get his shoulder issue straightened out.

I think anyone who's been watching closely has thought something's been wrong with Doc since spring training. He's headed for the DL for sure. The real question is how serious it is. Now the idea of trading guys like Blanton and Kendrick doesn't sound so good.

The other question is who will replace Doc? While Cloyd is pitching well I suspect it will be either Elarton or Bush who fills in. Once Worley is back, we'll only need Kendrick as a fill-in. It looks like Kendrick is going to get a lot of starts this year.

Bush has a June 1 release option inhis minor league deal so it may well be him with Earlton the next in line and he is 5-1. Cloyd pitced well today in a no decision.

A pro like Doc will never give the manager the ball. That's where the manager's judgment and decision making supersede that of the player- almost forgot we have a "players" manager which means we have no manager..........

I hope the health news on Doc will be positive. He has been a warrior for this ballclub, but hasn't pitched to his usual standards this season. It's time to start grooming Rollins as a utility infielder. He might as well get acquainted with other infield positions for the next 2 and a half seasons. Truly one of Ruben Amaro's worst moments as a GM, in resigning Rollins. Freddy Galvis might as well play everyday at his natural position of shortstop.

@s..... you are correct.....Elarton and Bush are down at LHV for just this reason.....Cloyd has a long way to go. There is no guarantee on Worley either. he could make 1 more start or all of them depending on what the bone chip allows him to do, so you can't count on him either.

Elarton has been pitching pretty well at LV and he had a good spring. I tend to think he'll get the call.

Worley is likely going to have to pitch in pain the rest of the year. So, yes -- very hard to predict what you can get out of him.

Phillies players just love the DL. But don't think Doc is one of them. Its about time for Rollins to take some more time off. There is no reason to keep Rollins in the line up once Utley returns. Galvis will outhit and out glove Rollins. Get the players that don't want to play out of the line up.

OK, here's the part I don't get. At the top of the next inning, with Halladay still technically in the game, his turn at bat comes up with a runner on base. Manuel pinch hits for Halladay with Pete Orr and and Orr sacrifices the runner to 2nd. Huh?!!! Are you trying to tell me that Halladay couldn't have laid down a sacrifice bunt with a sore shoulder? And even if he couldn't, why would you waste a perfectly good bench player on a sacrifice when there are pitchers available to do it? Dumb, dumb, dumb and dumber managing. That move didn't cost the Phils the game but it was still stupid.

@DonW.....I didn't go to Johns Hopkins but I did pitch for 23 years and I have rehabbed pitchers for 30, it's my profession. I myself have been where Doc is right now, it doesn't feel good at all. I pitched hardball til I was 48 yo when my shoulder did as his is now. It was more surgery or quit so I retired from the field. I've seen this in my patients too many times thru the years also.

@Tex...I don't think Charles sent Orr up there to bunt. Orr saw the 3rd baseman playing deep and decided to lay one down on his own. He just neglected to push it a little further down the 3rd base line and it backfired on him. Charles was not pleased as his reaction in the dugout spoke volumes.

@Dudeskins....ty for the support.....I'm not trying to be a wise guy here as you know, only trying to give people here the benefit of my training and my own personal experience with these injuries. Again, for newbies on here who don't know me, or the same 5 yahoos with new screenames who just like to insult, there's nothing I can do but try to enlighten. Trading puts and calls I don't know squat, but the human body and pitching in particular, is my profession and my life.

Part of the game. According to Stan Conte, director of medical services for the Dodgers, approximately 50% of starting pitchers go on the disabled list every year (from Tom Verducci article 4/17). I assume that's why Rube has so many good ones and why guys who can generally stay healthy and pitch make so much money. Last year it was Blanton and Oswalt, but the three main guys all had career years- a rare happening that should have resulted in more wins.

    Posted on other Halladay article...
...Bush is not a young guy, 32, 187 starts in major leagues - 4.70 ERA Career in AAA 14-15 3.97 ERA

Elarton, 36, 170 starts in major leagues, 5.29 lifetime ERA

    Cloyd- 2012
    4 starts at Reading 1.80
    6 starts at Lehigh 2.15
Cloyd, who was not ranked by the Daily News and the Inquirer among the organization's Top 25 prospects and was not protected in the Rule 5 draft last offseason

Pretty sure Cloyd, the young dude with future upside will NOT be brought up. Would make the organization look bad for not noticing him.

By the way, know who wasn't listed in the organization's top 20 midseason 2010 ... Vance Worley.

Kinda sucks when someone succeeds big time, even though your top scouts didn't think much of him.

To clear up any misunderstanding on the length of Doc's contract, according to Cot's, the contract is guaranteed through 2013. Doc needs to meet some criteria for the 2014 option to vest. Included in that is throwing a combined 415 innings between '21 and '13. That's not all, but the vesting option is related to 2012 only in that regard. An earlier poster said he was signed through 2014, which is not automatically true, and at least subject to being jeaopardized off yesterday's departure.

I do not understand. The Phillies have attempted to retain their talent and spend the money brought in by the sold out CBP. If they let Howard and Utley (and Jimmy) walk rather than give them big contracts, we have an unhappy fan base. No American League team is paying $15 million for a DH with chronic knee condition. As someone pointed out, pitchers get hurt. There is no way around it. Have to feel lucky we have Kendrick and maybe Blanton stays. As for that Lee-Victorino confrontation? I felt great that our millionaires CARE about winning. as tough as this season has been, our team plays hard and they want to win. Here is to a great start for Hamels and 11 out of 16.

Caution is the word. I'd bet there isn't a pitcher in the big leagues that doesn't have a sore shoulder.
