Halladay leaves after two innings

POSTED: Sunday, May 27, 2012, 3:24 PM

Is it time to panic about Roy Halladay’s sore right shoulder?
Yes. This is Negadelphia.
No. He is the rock of this franchise.
Maybe. I’m too nervous to decide.

ST. LOUIS -- What started as the most pleasant of series for the Phillies took a seriously wrong turn Sunday when Roy Halladay had to leave his start against the St. Louis Cardinals after just two innings.

The team announced in the fifth inning that he left as a precaution because of right shoulder soreness. He will be reevaluated in the next couple of days.

Halladay, 4-4 with a 3.58 ERA coming into the game, labored through the first inning, throwing 26 pitches and allowing his second grand slam of the month, placing the Phillies in a 4-0 hole. Yadier Molina hit the two-out grand slam after the Cardinals had loaded the bases on two singles and a walk to David Freese.

The grand slam came on a 92 m.p.h. fastball. Halladay returned in the second inning and retired the Cardinals in order on 10 pitches, but it was clear something was wrong when lefthander Joe Savery started warming in the bullpen as the Phillies hit in the top of the third inning.

Halladay's ERA now sits at 3.98, the highest it has been this late in a season since 2007 when he was with Toronto.

It's clear that Doc has been struggling all year with this which explains his higher era. Phil's need to sign Hamels now more than ever if this is a shoulder injury that could shorten Halladay's career.

My post in response to beegal on May 24:

"@beegal, you may have something there...it certainly doesn't look like Doc has the same sink or movement on his pitches. His arm slot looks a little lower to me and from having pitched for 23 years I can tell you it's usuaully a sign that something is not right, stiff back, weakness/pain in the shoulder, etc. I've been there a few times."

I know I'm going to take some flak for this again, but this latest post is only more evidence that as a former pitcher and a therapist with 30 years in sport medicine, I know what I'm talking about when it comes to injured pitchers.

I hope Doc is not hurt badly but my gut feeling given his velocity drop, arm slot and results of how his pitches (don't)move crisply tells me it's his rotator cuff but of course without access to his MRI who knows. It could just as easily be a labral tear. Either way, I don't like it and I don't think this is a short term problem for Doc or us. Maybe this just isn't supposed to be our year?

Is this diagnosis just like your diagnosis for Hamels this past offseason, Dr. Quinn? Whether he's injured or not, get over yourself, Chicken Little.

For anyone wishing to contribute, I'm taking up a collection so we can by Mark a life.

He offered an opinion with some input, what did you offer ,insults?? Maybe a tin cup for yourself might be more in order.

Probably another example of Uncle Cholly ruining Dave Montgomery's most prized horse by allowing him to stay in games with exhorbitant pitch counts.

He could use the rest. There's an article from today that says "Halladay remains confident" so I doubt today's problem is part of any lingering injury.

Kiss this season goodbye folks. Get out those 2008 DVD's because it might be a long time until you see another Phillies WS Championship!
