Birds Not Likely to Make QB or RB Move Now

POSTED: Tuesday, October 5, 2010, 7:59 AM

A source close to the situation said today that the Eagles are not looking to add a quarterback or a running back right now.

That would seem to indicate that the team views the injuries to quarterback Michael Vick and running back LeSean McCoy as short term, no more than a few weeks.

If Vick's rib cartilage tear is going to keep him out more than a few weeks, the Eagles would seem to need a veteran backup quarterback to play behind Kevin Kolb. The only other QB on the roster is rookie Mike Kafka.

That has led to speculation that Jeff Garcia could be available for his third tour of duty with the Eagles. Garcia was brought in last year when Donovan McNabb was out for 2 weeks with a rib injury.

The potential complication this time is that Garcia is playing for the Omaha Nighthawks, of the United Football League, and playing quite well. Terms of his contract would require any NFL team interested in him to buy out his UFL contract by paying the Nighthawks $150,000 and then the move must be approved by the UFL.

Garcia, however, said any suggestion that he is returning to the Eagles, or the NFL right now, is just speculation.

“I know I signed a contract committing myself to the Omaha Nighthawks," Garcia told the Omaha World Herald. “If there is a way out of it, I don't know the fine print. And it's not something I'm investigating right now.

“I don't even want to talk what-ifs. I've gotten myself in trouble in the past with what-ifs. If it becomes reality, it will be something that we have to think about and discuss. Until then, I'm not going to get distracted with outside talks."

Garcia is 42-for-75 for 509 yards, with five touchdowns and two interceptions, for the 2-0 Nighthawks.

"There are teams out there that have needs, and it's more than just Philadelphia," Garcia said. “Until one of those teams calls and actually talks to my agent, or calls here and talks to [Omaha GM] Rick Mueller, it's just talk. I've been through this before, and my whole attitude has been not to get caught up in it. I'm going to focus on what I'm doing here and trying to get better and help this team to more wins."

The Eagles have three running backs in addition to McCoy, who played the second half of Sunday's loss to the Redskins with his cracked rib. McCoy's 445 total yards rank fifth in the NFL.

The Eagles might be more likely to make a roster move this week involving a wide receiver, since rookie Riley Cooper suffered a concussion against the Redskins, leaving the Birds with the bare minimum of three wideouts.

Talk about the Grateful Dead. Andy will just have to put them in a better position to win the next two weeks. Right Andy?

NFL is horrible this year...all the teams equally suck! The Eagles teams of the late 80's and early 90's would run the table playing against these pathetic teams!

I wonder how this team would have performed had they kept McNabb and brought in a Bill Cowher type of coach. Played smash mouth defense and focused on controlling the game clock by running the football. They finally have playmakers on offense and got rid of the QB that was best at stretching the field. I remember last year during a game the Eagles had goal to go and all 4 downs they threw the ball. McNabb walked back the sideline frustrated and the cameras caught him saying to Andy and Marty "we have to run the ball". What a novel idea.

I feel sorry for paying Eagles fans, but there is some part of me, as a fan, that derives some perverse enjoyment of knowing that the arrogant management of this team is looking like the pompous, overstuffed bunch that it is.

The Tonner's seen enough of Andy, he doesn't want to see anymore. As Pete Brady once said, when it's time to change you've got to rearrange. AR will probably go on to win a Super Bowl because that's what happens with former Eagle coaches but the Tonner doesn't see Big Red getting it done here. Time's yours.

Garcia is just the kind of guy this team needs now, given the injury to Vick. I like KK, but I'm seeing a lot of Bobby Hoying in him.

Don't know why you wouldn't make a play for Trent Edwards, and just be rid of Kafka completely. Reason being is come next year, Vick or Kolb will be gone. They will need a capable back-up. Edwards could be a decent WCO QB, considering he doesn't like to throw downfield.

So how crazy/ironic would it be if Kolb got hurt in the first half of the 49er game, and Kafka came in and lit up the place? Don't laugh, crazier things have already happened this season.

With the offensive line, the Eagles need to have 3 quarterbacks available EVERY week. Maybe Schmitt can take some snaps behind center, he might be the only one who will survive. Imagine how many sacks the Eagles would have given up without the holding calls. Fans are picking apart Kolb but the problem isn't at QB.

I love all the hire Cowher comments. I guess it was lost on all the Cowher lovers that it took him 14 years and a really bad officiating crew to win a Super Bowl in Pittsburgh. In his 11-12th seasons, the Stiller fans were calling for his head too. Additionally, do you really think Cowher would leave his comfy TV gig to come work for Joe Banner and his wonder boy Howie Roseman?

Kolb is terrible. Reid really messed up with that pick. Garcia adds toughness, but nothing more. His arm is limp. What do you do at this point? Nothing. At the end of the season, get rid of Reid and rebuild!

To quote Djax here "I told him: 'Don't take no hits like that. We can't afford you taking hits,'" Jackson said. -- HMMM Now does that sound like the Eagles star receiver is hinting just a little to the media that without Vick and with the Klob his numbers are going to take an elephant sized dump?

We don't need to do anything, we have the best roster in the NFL. Stand pat is the way to go and has always worked for the gold standard.

They already dropped Hank Baskett, a guy who many do not like but knows the offense..I say they give Norwood or Hall a chance.

@downthemiddle: Your point is valid, but this city likes and prefers hard nosed smash mouth football over these soft, pass happy teams Andy assembles. Usually this team loses to teams that out-physical them. Why do you think Buddy Ryan's teams are so loved even though he never won a playoff game?

If Joe Banner, Howie Roseman, and Slim Andy ran the Phillies, they would have said "nah, we don't need Halladay because that 4th-rounder is too important." And they would have never traded for Oswalt or Lee, and would have said "we feel good about what Kyle Kendrick can do for us."

How much would it cost to buy out Kurt Warner's contract with "Dancing with the Stars?" Of course, he could be voted off for free.

Did anybody really think Kolb was going to step in and start throwing for 250-300 yds per game....every game? Hopefully, he steps up this week and throws a bit downfield (instead of checking off ...as his first read!). Maybe he'll end up being what soooo many people ( I was against the trade initially, but figured that since it was a done deal...may as well root for the kid) thought he'd be...anybody but McNabb. Never understood that thinking, as McNabb (as erratic as he could be) brought years of excitement and many more wins than losses to the city of Philadelphia. I'm just happy that the fans gave him a proper ovation when he came back to Philly. While it didn't feed the media's stereotype of Philly fans....it was the right thing to do.

Hey Mr. Lurie: It's time, Reid must go. Give Kolb the rest of the season and lets see what he can do. Without Reid he will he will do fine. Get what you can for the dog killer.
