GLew Outta Here

The Eagles have traded wideout Greg Lewis to New England for a fifth-round pick in this year's draft. The Pats also get a seventh-rounder in 2010, a source close to the situation said.

GLew Outta Here

POSTED: Thursday, March 5, 2009, 4:39 PM

Karma works in strange ways.

On the same day the Cowboys parted with Terrell Owens, the Eagles have traded Owens' most fervent Eagles GLew and his mentor, in happier timesacolyte, reserve wideout Greg Lewis, to New England. The Birds get a fifth-rounder this year, bringing them up to an even dozen picks in the April 25-26 draft. They send the Pats a 2010 seventh-rounder.

Lewis entered the league as an Eagles undrafted free agent in 2003 (that was the year all the guys they drafted stunk and all the undrafted free agents they signed were good. Go figure). He showed promise, humor and wit, before falling under the spell of Darth Owens during T.O.'s two-year sojourn in green. Lewis, badly overmatched when the Eagles made him a starter following Owens' suspension in 2005, quickly soured on the media and spent the rest of his Eagles career being surly and sarcastic. He had good hands, and was an able special teams performer, though this past season he seemed to take an inordinate amount of special teams penalties.

For some reason, Pats coach Bill Belichick has always coveted Lewis. Belichick was able to make Jabar Gaffney into a productive wideout after the Eagles released him, so maybe he knows something we don't.

Greg Lewis was legit, for what they had to do to get him. Sure as hell better than that mutt Reggie Brown. Whatever...so the Eagles Get Stacy Andrews, more or less a "Dr. Melfi" for his brother, and a 2 5th round picks in exchange for Dawkins, Buckhalter, Shepherd, Greg Lewis, Sean Considine, and likely Thomas and Runyan. Genius fk'n front office we have. Please, someone replay me the Banner piece about how STOKED we should be that they spend real dollars and push forward virtual dollars. That part had me so pumped.

Thank goodness!!!! He should've been gone years ago. He personifies the Eagles delusional thought that you don't need talented/impact WRs to win.

Profootballtalk.com reported earlier today that the Eagles offered G-Lew and a can of Pennsylvania Dutch birch beer to philly10 for his Caps Lock button, but he turned down their offer, thus opening the door for the Pats to swoop in and grab him.

Watch him blossom into the next Wes Welker. Coaching is everything.

Lewis only ever played well against New England. It was wierd. I expected the FO to cut him and then see Cheat pick him up immediately. I consider this a monster win for the FO.

Addition by subtraction! Since the Eagles bring their WR's in by packages, he got a lot more playing time than he deserved. He could only run one route and only catch the ball when wide open. Any time he was on the field he took playing time from better WR's (which is to say all of them) It's a shame the Eagles don't rotate playcallers as often as they rotate the other positions. For anybody but Curtis, Jackson and Baskett to get a snap was a sin!!!!!!
