Having finally figured out their salary cap for the season, the Flyers found room to sign defenseman Hal Gill to a one-year contract.
The veteran blueliner has played 15 seasons in the NHL, with a career plus-minus rating of +44 in 1,102 career games. Now embarking on his 16th campaign, Gill stands 6-foot-7 and 240 pounds, and is 38 years old. He has previously played for Nashville, Montréal, Pittsburgh, Toronto and Boston.
Gill was invited to the Flyers' preseason training camp on a professional tryout. Though general manager Paul Holmgren wasn't sure for a while whether he'd be able to fit Gill onto the roster, his final salary cap moves cleared just enough space to make the signing.
TSN's Bob McKenzie reported that Gill's contract is worth $700,000.
