Flyers call up goalie Carter Hutton
The Flyers lost another goalie on Saturday in Pittsburgh.
Flyers call up goalie Carter Hutton
*UPDATE*
The Flyers have called up goalie Carter Hutton, freshly signed from UMass-Lowell, to replace the injured Johan Backlund on the Flyers' roster.
Hutton was signed last week by the Flyers, straight from college.
Hutton, 24, played his college hockey at the University of Massachusetts Lowell of Hockey
Hutton completed his four-year career at UMass-Lowell as the school's all-time leader in shutouts (10) and goals-against average (2.33) and is tied for the career lead in save percentage (0.913)
---PREVIOUS POST---
First it was Ray Emery.
Then it was Brian Boucher, followed by Michael Leighton.
And today it was Johan Backlund.
As the Flyers’ fourth starting goalie this season, Backlund was forced to leave his NHL debut against the Penguins after the second period with a re-aggravated groin injury. Backlund was seen stretching through numerous stoppages at Mellon Arena.
Boucher replaced him to start the third period.
But it wasn’t because of Backlund’s performance. Backlund stopped 22-of-24 shots and gave the Flyers, who scored just 62 seconds into the contest, a chance to win.
They ultimately fell, 4-1, to the Penguins – and thanks to a Bruins 5-0 win over Calgary – dropped into 8th place in the Eastern Conference.
Backlund first injured his groin with the Phantoms in a 2-1 overtime win against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on March 14. It kept him from being recalled as Boucher’s backup when Leighton went down in Nashville on March 16.
Jeremy Duchesne was Boucher’s backup for four games until Thursday’s 4-3 loss to Minnesota.
There has been no word from the Flyers yet as to whether Duchesne will need to be re-called to replace Backlund for Sunday’s matchup with the Devils at the Wachovia Center.
The Flyers aren’t yet out of the woods today, though. More damage can be done with games remaining on the docket from the Rangers and Thrashers, who are nipping at the floundering Flyers’ heels.
This team is a bunch of DOGS. Quitters. No heart. Excuse makers. You should all be ashamed. jibberjabber
Can't fight through adversity. No guts, No heart. First time I have truly felt like this in a long long time. Momus
Their next drop is right out of the playoffs. BobbyD
Ugh, this is painful...on the upside, the Phillies start in a week to numb the pain Timmy
Are you kidding me? This is the best question Philly.com could come up with??? Maximus25
I know we are not the most popular team in the league but after watching today's game I am convinced that the entire world is against us! Gagne's disallowed goal was one thing (Flower out of the crease, no penalty called, no whistle, goal signaled on the ice) but when Flower throws his goalie stick at Giroux and no penalty shot results there needs to be a review of the refereeing in this game by the league! Yes we were outplayed AGAIN so not to make excuses but if we have to continue to beat the refs and the opponent we may as well pack it in now... BleedOrange
They Flyers may not be great and their goal tending is a HUGE issue, but they will never win when they have to take on a very good team and terrible officiating at the same time. SFPhillyphan
Wow......it took 6 comments in for the first Kool aid drinker to start placing blame on others. jibberjabber
I think we should change the name "Flyers" to "Cryers" Tom5576

Horrible officiating as usual. Fleury threw his stick, no call. Cooke crosschecks a Flyer which results in a Penguin goal, no call. Flyers probably would have lost anyway, but officials don't need to help the Penguins. cnova000
LOL! Concerned about the goalie situation?! Why, is it January again!? Sweet. I get that Super Bowl party all over. aezoll
first off jibberjabber your posts are meant for the trashbin. Moving on- this game was an abortion of officiating, first the flyers get screwed on something that ends up being a wash, not goalie interference and not a goal. How come Fluery can spend his time a foot and a half outside the crease? Second, no holding the stick call which led to goal 3? and third, what in god's name did hartnell do to end up in the box to see goal 4? Normally I do hold the Flyers accountable but not if the officials are wrapping up the game in black and yellow paper to give to the golden boy and the rest of the Pittsburgh trailer trash. Yeah it does suck that Backlund left the game and I gotta ask what goalie spirit did the flyers p*** off in order to get this kind of bad luck with netminders???? Phillyaddicted
Jibber jabber, it has nothing to do with KoolAid or being a homer... if you watched the games we played against the Pens, and today was no different, you will see bias. Thrown stick, phantom calls, blown calls... unbelieveable. I think the NHL wants Crosby to run for Prime Minister of Canada next. PhillyzkidSC
Folks, the officiating has been atrocious for the latter part of this year. Missed calls, phantom calls, using the stadium arenavision to overturn a goal...I have heard and seen everything now. When will the NHL owners realize that they are a 2nd rate sport with the terrible officiating, poor replay in Toronto and bias for the superstars. Time to remove the commisioner and his band of cronies. College hockey is becoming more credible. What a disgrace. sugardoc54
I agree with most here that whenever the Pens play they get more than the benefit of the doubt on calls. Good news is they won't be hoisting the cups this season. Blackhawks will finally get what they deserve. whsbuss
guess it wasn't the coaching. mrkmcc
C'mon boys we scored one fluke goal. Not enough talent to compete in a playoff series with Washington, Jersey or Penguins. Start over. gretzkyisking- Had to watch again today - my doctor is convinced I have a masochism problem. That said (and acknowledging that the Flyers absolutely suck), the NHL needs to fix the officiating. I love the game - watch it at every level; and used to set the alarm at the beginning of the week to remind me when a good NHL game was on. Now the only time I see an NHL game is when I stumble upon one channel surfing - and can't find an NCIS rerun. (far better entertainment). Bettman and this regime have really dragged the game down to wrestling level. Until there are consistent rules for every player on every team, hockey will continue to fail to attract sports fans. The Olympics - consisting of alot of the same players with mostly the same rules - drew record audiences not because there's no fighting but because those games were actual hockey games - non stop action with players actually trying. The NHL has become a farce where the anointed few do whatever they want and only have to compete for camera face time with the star-wannabe refs who apparently need to blow their whistles alot to exhale all the air they've taken in from sucking so much. raoool
Third goal. Uncalled grabbed stick, shot on goal, rebound to Flyers player, uncalled crosscheck, goal against. I agree that the Flyers are playing poorly, but when two consecutive penalties are committed and the direct result is the puck in the back of a net, it is impossible to not blame the refs. cesegal
I was concerned about the goalie situation when Hextall left!!! TNFlyerNut
Yea, the officiating was bad today, but the Flyers were worse. Their only goal came on a bouncing puck. They applied no offesive pressure the whole game. The power play is pathetic. They have not had a good offensive showing in weeks. Parent and Coburn have no business being on the penalty kill, but I can not really offer anybody to put in their spots. Briere and Richards have gone missing. This group of players can not fight through adversity, they just need some horns and hats for the pity party they have on the bench during the game. AreaMan
Stop the whining. We've seen that same "incidental contact" call before. The crying here is disgraceful. Blame Holmgren for poor cap management and not picking a goaltender when he could. St.Patrick33
Absolutely: the Flyers have not won a Stanley Cup for 35 years because of the officials, a longstanding plot by the League, along with the Vegas oddsmakers. Only Ed. Snider and the true Flyers fans know this. Shh!! Rumor has it the NBA is also conspiring against the Sixers. Only Ed. Snider and the true Sixers fans know this. Shh! chuckw
Once again one goal. We should revolt against ownership. Pathetic talent on the ice. These rants against the refs are heard in every city. We are not talented enough to compete-period. gretzkyisking
Comment removed.- Defense and goaltending are not the problem with the Flyers. Check out the plus-minus numbers. The backline is doing fine in that regard; the forwards are 'way down the list. The play of the forwards is very weak. It starts with Richards, who is not acting like a captain. The rest of the cast is scoring at a 15-goals-per-season or less pace. This is not going to win it. Giroux is everybody's favorite player, but he has 14 goals in about 70 games. Hartnell, JVR, and the other forwards sometimes play as if they didn't know the object of the game. Even Marty Broduer can't win when they club is shut out, as against Montreal. And today's goal was a total fluke, or they were shut out again. Our healthy goalies are good enough to win the Cup. Tell me who saw Giguere, Khabibulin, Osgood, Fluery or Ward winning the Cup before they did win one. Emery or Leighton are as good as that group, and could win the Cup. But Marty Broduer AND Jacques Plante in net at the same time couldn't win with this loafing set of uninspired forwards.
Sit Hartnell play Cote what could it hurt, plus he got a haicut. cleflyer- Flyers are now "tost"... dogman5
The Flyers are to blame for this loss. Period. I'm honestly at the point now where I'm rooting for them to miss the playoffs so management can have no more illusions. The worst thing is I don't see how it can be fixed in the off-season. Piles of money tied up on multiyear, no-trade contracts for scrub players. Absolutely no solution for goaltender. Half a defense corps. An anointed captain who couldn't lead his way out of a paper bag. We are screwed, folks, we are screwed. 88etrain
Starting 1st line Sunday...Lappy between Cote and Carcillo. 2nd line Betts between Powe and Asham. 3rd line Richards between Gagne and Giroux. 4th line Briere between Hartnell and Leno or whatever his name is. cleflyer
Between having to put up with that disgraceful officiating, listening to the BIGGEST homer Penguin announcers EVER and the Flyers lack of caring for or retaliation of said misdeeds I dont think I can watch anymore this year...I mean my family room saw more emotion and assault of furniture than the Flyers showed out there today! Lavy looks like he cant take anymore and didnt even show his anger that he usually shows when his team gets screwed...looked like Stevens back there today! What happened to the days of throwing everything on the bench, sticks, water bottles, etc on the ice to make your point! Who cares about the consequences, it wont effect the outcome either way. Homer you need to come out in the media and say something about the officiating no matter what the fine, Im sure Lukko will pick it up! How bout some Philly emotion?! Should have been 10 guys going at it at the end of that game, instead nothing....emabarassing! TNFlyerNut

Everyone . . you could see this coming when the pens lucked out and got crybaby crosby and the caps ended up with ovie . . . richards and carter are good . . but not in that same class . . Flyers on the other hand had a terrible year and ended up w / JVR . . big difference . . just unlucky . . . I remember thinking just after the pens won the crosby lottery . . . we were in big trouble for the next 10 - 12 years . . unfortunately this may be the case . . . ingy9
Yeah. It's allthe officials' fault. Because Hartnell et al are such model citizens. I love how you people always jump to the conclusion that the league is just so biased towards Crosby. It wasn't too long ago that the league did everything in it's power to tilt the ice towards Lindros. southjerseyjeff- The NHL should have a "protest" clause in it's rules. because either the officials don't know the rules or they refuse to enforce them..Shame the NHL doesn't have a commissioner..
- There were actually 2 missed calls on goal 3: holding the stick in the corner and then a cross-check to Betts' back in front of the net that freed up the rebound for the goal (the refs had to see it, after all they knew who to give the assist to). The thrown stick against an unchallenged attacker - flagrant. Hartnell gets a penalty for getting checked and knocked down? And where is the rule that disallows a goal for contact that isn't a penalty - you can hit the goalie but you can't score? Or is it that you can't score if their defense knocks you into their own goalie? Wow. No wonder ESPN bowed out of televising the NHL. At least let teams win or lose on their own right. icarus
NEWSFLASH Cazptain Philadelphia: Emery & Leighton are done for the season. If you haven't noticed, we're on our fourth-string goalie now. I agree that the forwards are underachieving as a group, but our problems are much bigger than that. 88etrain
with all that said...this team stinks! No leadership, no commitment, no consistency, very poor management and an oversupply of underacheivers! TNFlyerNut

Score was 4-1. Put pucks in the net. That's how you win in the NHL. southjerseyjeff
I posted earlier in the season that Richards was not deserving of the 'C' on his chest, and most mocked me and did not let me play in any reindeer games. Now that the season is sinking faster than a Steven A. Smith sports talk show, Richards is showing that as a captain he has a lot to learn and as a player he has become a non-entity. Even the sportscasters now are questioning his leadership and his playing ability. Time to find the next Flyer to lead this team. rockinrob

Place the blame where it belongs....with Bobby Clarke. He spent all that time and money trying to rebuild the 70's Flyers. Where did that get the Flyers?? Nowhere. Right into the crapper. southjerseyjeff
In case anyone was wondering, Hartnell's been paid $300,000 per goal this season. 88etrain
We can highlight the poor officiating all we want, but the bottom line is "good play creates good breaks". Enough said. dri_as_a_bone
For a team facing already adversity to have to have the refs blowing calls as well is inexcusable. Since when does a goalie get to be clearly in the white ice and not be touched? Was there a whistle? No! So why no goal by Gags? Oh, after the fact, I see... not! And Cindy runs into Hartnell from behind and Hartnell gets a roughing? Get real. GrnMtBoy
Colin Campbell in the NHL had big money in Las Vegas riding on this game. Refs had to call to Toronto on the disallowed goal so he could make it right. Marouelli and the other clown felt they could make the non-call on the Fleury stick throw without any outside help. Chamberlain ghost wrote "My Life in a Bush League" for SI years ago. I'm waiting for Scott Hartnell to write an article in need of re-writing now. Under Gary Bettman and Colin Campbell the NHL is truly bush league. Sorry for anyone spending money on it. Claudio Vernight- This club is heartless. Plain and simple. Holmgren has continually failed to put a cohesive team together that has any shot of beating the top teams in the league while at the same time managing to mortgage their future. The 15 year goaltending carousel is a complete embarrassment. This franchise is a joke.
- southjerseyjeff, it isn't about whether it's the refs' "fault". It's about whether the refs are competent to allow a game decided by the teams. From Rule 69.1: "Incidental contact with a goalkeeper will be permitted, and resulting goals allowed, when such contact is initiated outside of the goal crease, provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such contact. The rule will be enforced exclusively in accordance with the on-ice judgment of the Referee(s), and not by means of video replay or review." Get that? "Incidental contact", "goals allowed", "not by means of video". ACCORDING TO THE RULE, there cannot be a disallowed goal WITHOUT an accompanying interference penalty. icarus
IT'S OVER NOW! FIRE HOMER, FIRE HOMER, FIRE HOMER. WE HAVE NO TOP NEW PROSPECTS; FIRE HOMER! WE GAVE UP TWO FIRST ROUND PICKS AND LUPUL AND SPEIZA FOR PRONGER, AND THIS YEARS 1ST ROUNDER WILL PROBABLY BE AT LEAST THE 14TH IN THE FIRST ROUND, FIRE HOMER! MIKE RICHARDS IS OVERPAID 6.5 MILLION FOR 12 YRS, FIRE HOMER!RICHARDS IS OUR ANSWER TO CROSBY FOR 12 MORE YEARS, FIRE HOMER! WE OVER PAID HARTNELL, AND TIMO FOR A 1ST ROUND PICK, FIRE HOMER! WE WILL BE SH-T FOR YEARS, FIRE HOMER! Joe Vegas
There is obviously something bigger go on than the refs. The players are not playing for one another. I counted at least 10 times where a Flyer player gave up on a lose puck or an opportunity to create a play. I dont care what these guys or Lavi say, they have packed it in for the year. There done! They have had at least 4 games to show their resolve and each time they have crumbled. This is worse than 3 years ago when they finished dead last in the NHL. Fabulous- This is getting absolutely ridiculous with players getting hurt immediately when they're "supposed" to be recovered from a prior injury. After this happens this many times, over this many years, you have to wonder if McCrossin and the training staff are pushing these guys back out on the ice too quickly, for whatever reason. This happens all the time with this team!!! th
- This is the 3rd game this year against the puns that we had a goal disallowed. 3 games..3 goals caled back.. now thats a fact, dedhed
This Flyers team sucks. I don't watch the games anymore. I just check who they lost to. I am dropping my subscription to Directv to watch this Flyers team and maybe if enough other people sent a similar message to Snider, he'd get it.....get it? PJL51

If April is near, it must be time for the Flyers to fly south. Too many knuckleheaded North Americans, and not enough skilled Europeans. But will they learn? Flyers management is still living in the glory of the 1970s. phillyfury
Injuries will provide excuse to not fire Holmgren. He's built an overrated, under-performing team the last 2 seasons. we've lacked a solid goalie for decades. Holmgren and Snider GOTTA GO! Nezhy
How can "incidental contact" lead to a goal being overturned? It's either a goal or a goalie interference penalty. The officiating when we play the Pens is such a joke. BlairW
The only good thing is that the Flyers would have been eliminated in the first round anyway. Also, this supports my earlier contention that the Flyers never should have changed coaches. This new one has done nothing beneficial. knebman
FIRE HOLMGREN gave away our future in all those top draft picks. WE're renting Pronger for a year or two, while Lupul, Upshal, Sbisa all gone. Brilliant. Nezhy
You all can blame the officiating all you want, but PLEASE will you just admit, JUST THIS ONCE that between injuries and poor playing by those not accustomed to starting, the Flyers have been playing themselves out of the playoffs. Yes, there are bias calls against the Flyers, there's really no arguing that, but you still have to score when you have the opportunities and the Flyers just haven't been able to do that. And, as has always been the situation, NO CONSISTENT GOALTENDING is the main issue right now. There has to come a point when Flyers fans just admit that it's the players fault more so than other problems. Again, this isn't to say poor officiating doesn't put them in a hole SOMETIMES, but it's definitely not the only reason they have been consistently losing. Last I checked, giving up two 3rd period goals to the Wild isn't exactly the way to play your way into the playoffs. aisaac
I don't think the Flyers are a very good team, but you can't have officiating this bad in a league and expect people to take your sport seriously. ericg610
This team stinks, and if they missed the playoffs altogether that would be the best thing to happen to them.....they're farcical. Blaming the officiating is the only thing more laughable. boasocal
The word that best describes this team right now is hapless. The forwards are the biggest problem: soft, inconsistent, and in the cases of JVR and Giroux, simply not experienced enough yet. One small good thing: Backlund didn't look bad. He's fairly big, and unlike Leighton, it looks like he can move and has a glove hand. Of course it was only two periods. Boucher was fine in 3rd: goals totally not his fault and a great save on Crosby on that play where the net ended up dislodged. eagle1971- Richards is wimpy as a Captain...sorry!
- Sixers vs Flyers... one Common thread The OWNER Ed Snider.... stop taking these teams as a Hobby and Tax writeoff!
- My life will be better off just lapsing into a coma for the next week or two. It pains me to see the Flyers miss the playoffs as that sure seems to be their final destination. When they missed the playoffs in 1972 they were in it until the final four seconds of the season. This year instead it has been death by a thousand cuts. Fire both Luukko and Holmgren. Their fingerprints are all over the crime scene. Bring back Ron Hextall as the new GM as he seems to be learning a thing or two about building a winning team in Los Angeles.
How many years have we been blaming the refs?It all evens out in the end.The problem is the other team plays better. We will never win as long as Bobby Clarke and his puppets are running things.A complete change in philosophy is needed. As long as Clarke and our fans care more about winning fights and hard hits than about winning the game,WE WILL CONTINUE TO BE DOOMED! gatherer47- This team is another bust.
Bring in Al "Scoop" Millar!!! gakski
Waaaaaaaa waaaaaaa waaaaaaa. You CRYBABIES and blaming the REFS. Go call Ed Snider and get a diaper change. Flyers had 35 minutes left in the game to score ONCE after their goal was disallowed. Instead....THEY QUIT. This team is an embarrassment. Stop blaming the refs. YOUR TEAM IS FILLED WITH GUTLESS QUITTERS. jibberjabber
I get so tired of my fellow Flyer fans always blaming the officials. Yes, there were bad calls. Hartnell did nothing to Crosby - should have just let them play. Fluery did throw his stick. But so was the call on Rupp in the crease a bad call. And regardless of how the officials got there, there was interference on the disallowed goal and the goal should not have been allowed. There is no bigfoot, Kennedy wasn't killed by the CIA, and there is not an NHL conspiracy against our Flyers. Stars in all professional leagues get some special treatment including Richards at times. The officiating is inconsistent because it requires judgment calls by imperfect human beings. Just as the teams very in the level of their execution from game to game, so do the officials. Sometimes they have really good games, sometimes really bad games, but most of the time they do a good job. Hockey officials are no worse than football and basketball officials. Think about how many times football officials get overturned because of replay. My team got beat by a better team today. Except for the first 10-12 minutes of the first period, Pittsburgh won a greater percentage of the puck battles. Absent a great performance by a goalie, games are usually won and lost in the trenches. In football, which ever team controls the line usually wins the games. In hockey, which ever team wins most the puck battles, usually wins the games. We lost today because we did not win a majority of the buck battles. Flyercrusher
The Flyers are quitters. Heartless and weak. No captain. No goalie. No playoffs. Just end the season already. farside37
I love "men" who come on here and write things like "Waaaaaaaaaa" when they are sitting behind a nut-covered keyboard. So manly. And mature. And probably out of shape. And alone. And cliche. Ooops. Man, if you are over the age of 25, it's o.k., you can cry, no one is around. Just make sure you get the red out of your eyes before your pizza delivery shift, Jabber. It's o.k. to be hateful when your life sucks but there is a cure. First, stop trying to get people angry through a web site: it's immature and when we click out of this, no one cares if you are an accident. Secondly, follow your own team and be supportive, it's fun and makes you feel good. Third, don't wear your Crosby jersey to a Flyers game, that won't make you feel good. We don't hate you, we hate Crosby. You're just a jerk and for now on I'll be picking up my pizza. dr.elektrika
Big Tom that's about five posts over a few hours. Dude, are you in the basement, attic, run-down studio apartment or between shifts at Taco Bell. No, seriously, man, for someone that hates this team and it's fans so much you've honestly posted something like seven times over the course of the evening. Man, stop hating, just go outside and enjoy your life! things can't be that bad, can they? Is it Obama's fault? It's just a game! They are multi-millionaires and don't care about any of us! Really! dr.elektrika
Led, not lead. Basic grammar. Sheesh. socalphillyguy
Put this guy in net, boosh is horrible! djax10
No goalie, no prize...no goalie, no prize! Tonight Brian Startare (sp) on WIP stated the obvious - Danny Briere is underperforming. Add that the Flyers power play is two minutes where the opponents don't have to worry about being scored on, and you already came up with a first round loss unless the Flyers got the higher seed (somehow). Now,there is little chance for more than two or three wins the rest of the way, and even if they get the eighth spot, a shutout in the first round. Ron Fischman
Homer needs to call up Bernie maybe he can make another save? Fire Luukko and Homer! Homer took his shot and now needs a miracle to fix the Flyers. It also shows Luukko knows nothing about cap business or hockey. Flyer fans will be out the next 3 years. Hey, does Homer believe Pronger thinks "I can wait"? Frank Seravalli you need to get some iron ones and start becoming a good writer versus this cuddly friendly writer BS. The truth is we have over paid players. I am not saying the players aren't valuable I am saying that Homer choked himself on a long rope overpaying these guys and the cap is biting him in the asz as he hangs. Richards is not worth 6.5 mil especially for 12 years (he definetly is not in the top 8 to 10 centers in the NHL) Neither is Timo worth 6.5 mil, or Hartnel worth 4 mil. Remember Homer gave a #1 pick just to negotiate contracts with these guys. The rumor in Nashville was they would have taken a third. Oh, Homer wanted to make a nice trade with Nashville this year for D-man Hamhuis, Nashville asked for a #1 or Carter. Give me a break, they have no respect for Homer, NONE! WHY because Homer doesn't value a number 1 pick. Look, who would give you two #1 picks and two #1 propects for Pronger right now. Right smack in the middle of the playoffs. NOBODY! So you can see what a great trade that was. How about Upshaw for Carcillo and a SECOND round pick? Homer statement "you are going to like this guy! We do Homer but not for that price. GET REAL! Shoot! we don't have prospects that can start next year, defense is middle of the road even with Pronger we have no draft picks to build the team with in the future. FIRE HOMER, FIRE LUUKKO. They are killing us. Joe Vegas
Frank, Lavi said that the Flyers would win these games when it matters, specifically against Pittsburgh. Why doesn't someone ask him hey Peter, when are you going to start winning these games that will hopefully get us in the playoffs. Fabulous- i will not get the directv hockey package anymore, the team is terrible and I cannot listen to the other teams announcers after yesterday's game, those two knuckeleheads make you want to puke
PhillyzkidSC...what's the answer short of stop playing in the NHL. You sound like (the) Caps fans down here. STOP, the team is playing with NO passion and the Flyers have the second worse goalie situation in the NHL (just behind the Oilers). Lieno backed over the goalie, it's that simple = no goal! Yes, Fleury threw his stick (I yelled at teh TV too), that was a bad call and there were two penalties on the Pens which lead to thier third goal, Cooke held the stick and there was a crosscheck in front of the net. That's hockey. 67Flyer
When are Snider/Holmgren going to leave 1976 and join us in 2010? Get rid of the goons and get some skill and value the goalie position ArtieLange
The NHL as a group has the worst referees in professional sport, there are 4 and they cannot seem to see a thing. I agree the flyers are not playing at their best but you absolutly cannot beat the refs and the other team when the other team is as good as you. Living in Canada, I have always felt a bias toward the flyers. A bias built on a past reputation rather than reality. We could put out 20 Daniel Briere's on the ice and get called for roughing penalities all day. We could be known as the big bad Danny's. CanadianPhilly
HAY FLYERS FANS STOP CRYING i live in PANTHER land you all should thank GOD for flyers that team gave your city a heart now and as they SAY DO NOT RETREAT RELOAD FLYERS AND YOU TO FANS GOOD LUCK omba sucks
Ladies and gentlemen, this season's David Sloane, Carter Hutton. "When Cater Hutton speaks..." FlyFifty8
get a life everyone...did you really believe this team would go anywhere when they traded all the young talents for retreads? It's over. Being the 8th seed is the doom. jackd3
you kidding me canadianphilly..."there are four"...really...REEEEALLY?!? think about what you just said...and try again...there are NOT FOUR...there are TWO...count 'em TWO referees...the other two guys are what they cal linesmen...THEY just basically call the icings and off-sides...NOT the penalties!they can observe something...and whisper in the knucklehead referee's ear...but...come on...i know you knew THAT! phillyflyer31
Pens favored by league and league tells refs to favor Pens because of Cindy Crosby.Crosby is N.H.L. poster boy. wlgj
I never thought I would say this, but today against the Devils LETS GO FLYERS kokid8766
You can all cry about the team in general but this kid is the real deal. Actually hes not a kid really, he's 24 and widely regarded as the top goalie in college this year. If given the chance i bet he could take the starting spot next year. Good Signings Homer! taintaugustine
I don't know anything about Carter Hutton, but when he joined the Phantoms a week ago he beat the Hershey Bears on the road 4-3 last Sunday. Hershey had won every home game since Nov.28th of 2009. They won like 23/24 consecutive home games, until this guy stopped them. Hershey is best team in AHL and Phantoms have beat them 4 times this season. Is Homer paying this guy $100 a game to sit on the bench? I'd take my chances and see what he can do in the NHL, we already know what Boucher looks like this season. BobbyD

too many slow grinders on the team playing dump and chase behind the net. Also, bad luck, bad goaltending and bad free agent additions have finally caught up to this team. See you guys next season...the FLY BOYS are done. phillyfan19335
We go through periods. Years ago with the aging Primeau, Roenicke and Foppa, we needed to draft F. 2-3 years ago we began prospecting D. We haven't had a good wave of G in 20 years. Now maybe we will see a commitment to some G prospects. keith7470

I have been concerned about their goaltending for the past few seasons. Now I am just horrified by it!!!!! jacdjc1
This team is without character or heart. They will not be in a position to contend seriously for years since some of their younger "core" players are the most gutless. Lukko needs to burn it down and start from scratch. Tim Casey
OMG we're desperate / ingy9
Yes the officiating was garbage in this one. That is still no excuse to play flat. There needs to be some serious changes made on this team in the offseason. Laperriere and Pronger were supposed to be the answer. They were supposed to come in here and light a fire under the young players of this team. This core group just can't get it done together. There isn't enough accountability on this team, and that starts with Mike Richards. This offseason should be used to shake the foundation. They should tell Scotty Hartnell to waive his ntc and trade him. Then we should trade Jeff Carter for a number one goalie. No more Emery, no more Boucher, no Robert Esche, no more homeless joe. They have been trying to win a drag race with a 93 chevy lumina for the past 20 years and it doesn't work. Our defense is a few pieces away from being one of the best in the league. Maybe we could package Coburn and Hartnell and trade for a true defensive defenseman. Holmgren loves defenseman so this could very well happen. And let's be serious, we are not going to be able to outscore the Pittsburgh Penguins, they have too much fire power. We can, however, put together a stud defensive core to help shut them down. And I know a lot of people will say if we trade Carter and Hartnell, we are giving up too many goals in return for defense and goaltending. I would argue that JVR and Giroux need more ice time to flourish. Both of those kids are going to be terrific players. Giroux is right on the cusp of that right now. He has some of the best vision and hands I have ever seen. JVR has all of the skills to be great as well. He needs to play with more of a mean streak and he needs more ice time. I would fill the vacant spots on offense with fiery veteran players. Guys who will get in the faces of the younger players and call them out when needed. Guys who will not only speak up but back it up with 20-30 goals a year and good, smart defensive play. Bundy020
Carter Hutton---any relation to Tommy? Romus- See if McNabb can play goalie. Poppys
Bad officating - like weather conditions - normally affects both teams equally. Flyers fans need to stop belly-aching and address the root cause of their team's medicrity - Ed Snider. His anti-European, stuck-in-the-70's bias has cost this franchise dearly. Look who wound up with Kovalchuk. Time to just say no to your $100 tickets. CommonSenze

If the Flyers end up with Buffalo or Jersey they will make it to the second round and then who knows. The goalkeeping situation this year with all the injuries has been almost comical, but I tell you what, Emery is a big time goalkeeper and seems to have gotten the demons out of his closet. The changes Leighton has made to his game and his preformance for the Flyers this year have been fantastic. If the Flyers have healthy Leighton and Emery as there goalkeepers that would be fantastic! gkenney1
