I don't know yet what Eagles coach Andy Reid is going to say, about Donovan McNabb, about Thanksgiving night, about the future. But it is over. After his halftime benching against the Baltimore Ravens, the McNabb era in Philadelphia is over.

Reid could very well keep his own counsel on this one. He could give it a day before announcing his decision because that is what he does. But we are finished here. McNabb is finished here. After three more turnovers in the first half against the Ravens -- three turnovers, zero points, oh well -- Reid yanked his starting quarterback and replaced him with young Kevin Kolb. And we are done.

After which, the Eagles completely rolled over and lost to the Ravens, 36-7.

Again, we are done. Ten years and over -- just like that. A few weeks ago, this was one of the highest-scoring offenses in the National Football League. Now, this is a group that cannot do anything. Running back Brian Westbrook has no first step, no burst, no nothing at this point because of a lingering ankle sprain. Backup Correll Buckhalter hurt his knee and barely played after the first couple of series. There is no third running back because Reid did not dress Lorenzo Booker. That this is borderline malpractice goes without saying.

But the quarterback was terrible, again. He started off decently but crumbled after a sack/fumble early in the second quarter. Two more interceptions followed, along with a streak of pronounced wildness. And then Reid made the decision that, whatever he says, will be impossible to undo. The Eagles were trailing by only 10-7 but he yanked the franchise.

That Kolb was no better just added to the whole downspiral. He threw two more interceptions, including one that the Ravens' Ed Reed returned 108 yards for a touchdown, an NFL record.

You see, you saw history.

Lots of history.

mcat13: I never said anything about clapping. If you think Mcnabb was rooting for Kolb to suceed your are surely naive or very stupid. Entire talk shows dedicated to how Mcnabb stood 20 feet away from Reid and sulked. Most QB's would help out their prospective backup. You have absolutely NO FOOTBALL IQ !

Way to go Andy..you have been doing dumb play calling, draft the undraftable, bring your personal issues in without saying a word and the most cowardly thing you could do was not even go to the franchise qb that you say you respected..You should have let McNabb go before the season where he could have been on a winning team. You have hung Kolb over his head since you drafted him..Thanks for causing more hate and discontent among Eagles fans that already have it inside of us!!

Hey Bill1966 You really are not dumb enough to think the shot of Mcnabb clapping after the intercetion was him rooting against his teammates? Really? That dumb? I am sorry I will type slower next time

You could stick, Tom Brady,Joe Montana or any elite quarterback into his mess and still have the same result. After all this time routes are still run poorly or incorrectly, there is no time for the qb to set and go through his reads and no running game to take the pressure off so no Kolb will not be the second coming. Like any job the better the tools you have the better the finished product.

grales said it best: "I am quite embarrassed to be an Eagles fan. Reid's utter mismanagement of this team that I've supported all my life is just disgusting. Today's game hopefully will highlight his ineptitude enough that a fundamental coaching change will be made. Mr. Lurie, please do not be blind."

Lurie, has some big decisions to make. It's a given that there's lot of dead weight in the organization, which under Reid, has become complacent and lazy. I'm not saying that because of today's disaster, the organization has been sliding since their one and only Super Bowl appearance in Reid's tenure. With Philly's reputation around the league, hostility toward those who do not perform, may cause Lurie to break out his pocketbook and buy a contender. That's providing he actually cares!

ha ha birds are at death's door and g-men keep on rolling to another Super Bowl title. You know why? the Giants GM Jerry Reese is a genius on draft day and GM Andy Reid is an idiot! this game was an abortion from the start but then again the pathetic eagles could only muster a tie against the 1-8 bengals. Kolb looks like the 2nd coming of Mike McMahon.

End of McNabb era. Can we also say " End of a failed West Coast Philosphy Era "? Benching McNabb now just means there's nothing that can hide Reid's big fat you know what...( not that he could do that anyway ). Blow it all up..starting with Reid and all his titles, the puppet GM Heckert, Banner, ect. This organization needs a facelift...

here is our game plan for off season -1st FIRE ANDY, keep remaining oaching staf especially jimmy johnson. defense is helpless with an inept offense. Hire Mike Holmgren and get better quality full back wth speed and grit. menahil rest of the year we must see if kevin kolb is qb of future. if not draft or trade for qb perhaps when trading for lito and donovan.

Get Cowher in here, and give him the option of keeping McNabb, or trading him and going with Kolb. They might even want to draft a QB high in '09 to give him some competition. Cowher will have a field day with a player like DeSean Jackson, too. Just like Kordel Stewart, Antwaan Randle El, etc....plus he's a former Eagle, AND he might actually show some emotion and get this team's head out of it's arse.

This game wasn't even bad. It was more sad and pathetic than anything. There used to be a blind cat on my street, and sometimes he would try to walk in between fence posts. And he would get stuck. Just keep walking into the posts. That is what I felt like watching the game today.

McNabb and this team have been overrated for a long time. The only time the Eagles ruled the NFC East was when the other teams were bad. Now that the competition is tough the Eagles show exactly what they always were.

Thank you Andy and Donovan for the last 10 years. 4 NFC championship game appearances. 1 Super Bowl appearance. It was a good run, but it's time for a change. Since the 2004 season, only the Jeff Garcia stretch run in 2006 has been the Eagles lone bright spot. Look how the Patriots have been able to muster a pretty good offense this year with a guy that never started as a college QB and bunch of second-string running backs. That all points to coaching and smart player personnel moves. The Gold Standard is in New England and (now) New York.

panzerbjorne, do you also remember Reid saying during Garcia's great run that the following year there would be no quarterback competition, the starting job was McNabb's? Reid was either too loyal or wanted to go with the quarterback he felt most comfortable with in that situation. Another mistake by Reid. If we had Garcia last year, who knows how far the Eagles could have gone with so many of the better teams having let down years.

Reid did Kolb a big dis-service. The game was winnable when Kolb went in. Reid should have went to a ground game (gee whiz) which would have made the game much easier for Kolb to adjust to. Instead Reid comes out throwing putting all of the pressure on his inexperienced QB. Reid is just clueless. Doesnt know how to run a successful offense. Doesnt know how to handle his young QB. And to think before he came to the Eagles Reid was a QB coach. What a joke. Looks like he has finally run out of smoke and mirrors.

I think the Eagles have been mediocer for years, it was just lucky for them the rest of the NFC East was worse. Andy Reid has been a horrible play caller and judge of talent for years. They had a premier recevier for one full year and looked what happened, McNabb put up huge numbers and they went to the Super Bowl. I just hope the organization realizes Reid is awful. As a McNabb fan, I am going to sit back and watch them unload him to another team, just to watch him take them to a Super Bowl and win...what will we all say then?

Jeffrey Lurie should evaluate all of his options now. It would appear that the Eagles will draw a high pick in the 1st round of the upcoming draft. Reid & Co. have proven their utter failure in that department over the years. More importantly, this time (the rest of the season) should be an evaluation time of Kolb. Is he a bonifide starting QB in the NFL? Hopefully, the new coach next year will have enough film of Kolb to decide if his 1st round pick on his new team should be spent on the QB position. Personally, I have no idea. But Andy's first round picks, as few as they were, often left a lot to be desired. By Andy's decision at the halftime of today's 10-7 game he left no doubt that he anticipates this year to be another non-playoff appearance year. Jeffrey really needs to clean house. The Philadelphia Eagles are no longer a winning organization!

Donovan has not played very well lately. He doesnot appear to be motivated or have the spark to want to win. I guess he got too rich with the big contract, and just want to ride it out. Too bad, we all had great hopes for his success. Maybe when he got hurt he lost his zeal...

Once again the biggest plays of the game were with Eagles and one yard to go and they had no power game to get the yard either for a first down or a TD. McNabb was awful again and once they looked at Kolb, the McNabb era was over. The offense has only scored 13 points in the last 9 quarters and that is abysmal and that lies on the head of Andy Reid. As much as the both of them have done for this franchise, I think it is time for both of them to go and start anew.

At least since the early 70's, McNabb has been the best QB the Eagles have had. He's often had to shoulder the offensive burden alone having only had one all-pro receiver (Owens) for one year and that year he took the Eagles to the Super Bowl. But once McNabb stopped running and decided to become a pure pocket passer, has he been anything other than average? Also, while this may or may not make a difference in play, I don't like all the smiling and laughing on the part of McNabb before the Eagles even get a lead. Other QB's don't do it. They "bear down" and that means having a serious determination. Save the ha-ha's for after the game once a win has been secured.

Stick a fork in it - Andy and Donovan are done. Ten years - not a bad run for any combination, but done because (1) lack of innovation and (2) lack of adaptation. The West Coast version Andy is running is so late 90's that even the Bengles found it predictable. BTW, Matt Cassels is a free agent next year.

Reid saw complete offensive futility and acknowledging a bad loss decided that he would sacrifice Kolb in a no-win situation for Kolb therefore putting to rest any future qb controversy regarding Kolb. Now Reid can safely play Mcnabb the rest of the season with no second guessing. Kolb just wintnessed the begining and the end of his career in only a handful of plays. So sad.

For a QB and coach to be of this caliber & we continue to lose like this. They both NEED TO GO! Reid calls the dumbest plays, McNabb lacks that QB stature and leadership...and its trickling down to the rest of the team. They are not tackling good, the moral of this team is completely LOW! They are just running around the field with no esteem. This is ridiculous. In the last few games: McNabb is yawning on the sideline, taking breaths to wait for the 2:00 minute time out, he doesn't improvise like he used to and other things. Reid calls dumb plays: make a through at 2nd and goal with just a couple of inches at the goal line, and thats not the only one he done; its so many I cannot list them right now. I been telling everyone we need to get rid of McNabb and Reid for the last 2 seasons....it makes no sense to have a superbowl caliber team dwindle down like this to never go back to playoffs since! This is soo pitiful. And they said the problem was TO. The naysayers say: if we get rid of McNabb and Reid who are we gonna get???? I say: we dont know, but once you start the open dialog in the industry thats when people are gonna step out and say they wanna work as a coach or a team may wanna trade a player and then we can negotiate out of these contracts we have with McNabb and Reid. Ideally we can get who we want, long as we're willing to pay, someone like Tom Brady, (when he comes out of being hurt) or a current defensive coach or something for a team that has proven himself as coach caliber. Its just gonna take some time to get it all together to rebuild, but its obvious its not working with reid, mcnabb with the eagles franchise. we have to learn when its time to part ways....look at favre...if he had stayed with gbay do you all think he would have been doing with them, to what he doin now at the jets? Look at what Chad Pennington is to the Dolphins...do you think if he would have stayed with the Jets he'd be doing this? NO! A CHANGE is needed! Bye Guys

With Reid, it's always someone else's fault. McNabb was lucky when he threw for 30 TDs and 9 Ints. It can't be Reid's fault that McNabb has no weapons and has lost his confidence. Brian Westbrook, an all-pro running back, rushed for less than 65 yards today--Reid had nothing to do with it. The opposing defense knows what plays are coming--not because of Reid. Our geriatric tackles are playing terribly--but not because of Reid. Blocked kicks--what's Reid got to do with that? Jeremy Bloom? His last name doesn't even begin with the letter "R." The fullback is MIA? Hey, Reid sent out a search party for the guy. What's a coach to do?

Lets be clear here: McNabb has never had top talent at receiver, and Reid's offense has gotten less and less effective every year since the superbowl trip. No new talent has come via the draft due to poor talent evaluation and trading out of top rounds. Is it McNabb that needs to go? No, not until Reid and Banner get canned and we see if some other coach with fresh ideas can make something happen. Look at Baltimore and Atlanta - new coach, rookie QB, solid defense, effective run game - and see that it is possible to change directions without spending years in the cellar of the NFC East. So who needs to go first? Not McNabb, he has made the most of the meager talent and mediocre system he has been given. Banner and Lurie need to hit the road, and then we'll really know what we have got. Which I predict will be a playoff team in 2009... with McNabb but w/o Reid and Banner. Go Eagles!

McNabb& Reid should both be out the door, but Lurie won't eat those last years of Reid's contract. So, they sacrificed McNabb today. It means we'll have a couple more years before Lurie hires the cheapest coach available as the next head coach. Then that coach will have to rebuild. Sadly, it'll probably be at least 5 years until the Eagles can be competitive again. Did you see how Jeff Carter carried the whole Flyers team on his back in the 3rd period & overtime last night? Hitting, poke checking, getting 4 shots on net in 1 short shift. That's the kind of desire to win we want to see from our quarterback, not hitting himself in the chest, saying "my bad" after another never should have even been thrown interception. At least they've gotten through McNabb's extra thick head enough so that he's paying attention to the game when he's on the sideline and no longer laughing & smiling.

I think it's either/or Reid or McNabb. I know they came in together and rode together for a long time, but I think one of them is going to take the fall for the ineptitude. Even as recently as a month ago, I thought they were both here for as long as they wanted to be. But I think even Lurie has to realize the failure to lead and failure to perform has the potential to ruin the whole thing. This is not a .500 roster. But in the NFL if you play & coach poorly, there is no margin for error. I actually think this can be fixed without a full rebuild/overhaul, but they have to change something. Personally I think it's the attitude that you can win without committing to the run, but what do I know?

Worst decision ever by Andy Reid. The Eagles are three players away from being the top team in the NFC east, you take Mcnaab away we are going to be like the Lions. In Philly, we forget that we have to root for our team and players in the good and the bad times. Mcnaab played well against the Giants, but not so well against the Bengals and Ravens. This guys has given us 10 years of memories and this is how we pay him back....who were the eagles 10 years before mcnaab had been drafted? I am not saying we should not hold mcnaab accountable, I am just saying we should not throw our franchise quaterback under the bus.

Here we have one of the most successful coaches ever, and also the best coach ever for the Eagles, basically on his way out, because Lurie under managed the situation. We also just saw our possible future H.O.F. QB thrown under the bus because Reid can't help himself as he falls over himself to save his job. Best thing would be to go back in a time machine and slap some sense into Lurie before he gave all that power to Reid.

Weapon X nailed it. Reid can't draft, is too 'system' oriented, evidently can't engineer an effective game plan, and definitely can't run an offense on game day. Other than that, he's a good coach.

TO RICH HOFFMAN and (the #5 HATERS), BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR!!! Kevin Kolb looked terrible! He is an extremely small quarterback who knows the West Coast Offense, and looked AWFUL today. He got an opportunity in a BIG game to step up and he CHOKED! The problem the PHILADELPHIA EAGLES have is not with Donovan McNabb! IT IS OUR COACH! Donovan is playing with his BEST WEAPON VERY VERY HURT, HIS BEST OFFENSIVE LINEMAN OUT FOR THE YEAR, NO TIGHT END, NO FULL BACK! HAVE ANY GREAT QUARTERBACK TRY THAT...THEY WOULD SUCK TOO! THE ANDY REID ERA IS OVER IN PHILADELPHIA!!! PERIOD!!! ---If that means Donovan, too...SO BE IT! STUPID BECAUSE HE IS A GREAT QUARTERBACK WITH SOME FLAWS!!!! IT IS ANDY, NOT DONOVAN!!! GET RID OF HIM, LURIE!! LURIE, PLEASE GET RID OF ANDY AND BRING IN SPAGS, SHANAHAN, OR COWHER!!! HOFFMAN, YOUR A JOKE!!!

Had a back and forth defensive oriented game early, with the Eagles doing a decent job mixing the run and pass. Then boom, the McNabb fumble deep in Raven's territory. I can't blame Donovan for that one (I blame O-Line). Seems this team can't commit to the run for more than a quarter, then it's all-out pass. That being said, McNabb poorly underthrew Jackson on the 3 and 1 deep ball; Jackson did have a step, but had to stop the route to try and come back and defend the underthrow. Then McNabb's later INT was another lazy, behind the receiver throw - Jackson was again open. Worried about Kolb's arm strength; he sadly underthrew Curtis who had a few steps on the corner. A few other throws seemed to come up short in the middle of the field. Down 22-7 with inches to go to make is 22-14, how do you dial up a play for Reggie Brown????? If you decide to throw there, it's got to be quick hitter, not a deep drop and allow the D to sniff out the pass. Needed a QB sneak there, which is by no means expert analysis. Very frustrating.

Between the Giants RB's slashing through the defense, the lack of running the ball, lack of consistency across the offense, opposing tight ends galloping downfield - I've felt nothing but rage and disgust as a fan...this week - it all turned to pity...I really think between Reid and McNabb they have a clue how to get out of this mess and were grasping for anything....throwing on a second and goal from the 3 inch line with a rookie QB...as much as I should be disgusted - it was utterly predictable and just plain sad...pity, pity, pity....

Reid is going anywhere. He has three years left on his contract at 3 million/year. McIdiot is scheduled to make 10 million next year. He's gone. Nothing will change with Kolb, because fat Andy's drafting won't change and his play calling will not change. This is the beginning of long down period. This could be the Eagles of the sixties and early 70s.

I agree with everyone except hanksperka. Runyan is one solid piece for the Eagles. That penalty was an awful call. Tre Thomas is the weak link along with Jackson at center. Also, Gocong sucked on the blocked kick. Also, Westbrook's attempt at a tackle was embarrasing.

1st and goal QB sneak, now only three inches to go. I was sitting on my couch when they came to the line of scrimmage and I said "sneak it again, don't do something stupid." Kolb who is pretty much a rookie was put in a position to fail by this coach. Nothing like throwing Kolb into the fire. Although the team was pathetic all around, Reid still came through with another typical bonehead play. I could see if they ran the ball all the way down the field, that play action pass would have put the receiver wide open. One down, one to go. Time for Lurie to bench Reid.

Question for Mr. Lurie: Why do you continue to supply the postage that allows Andy to keep mailing it in every week? Maybe his family issues took a year to catch up to him and have finally burned him out, as he is simply going through the motions now. Illegal motions, on the offense, that is...

It looked to me Reid know if he played Mcnabb the entire game Mcnabb would end up with 10 turnovers and his era is over. Reid knew if Kolb was sacrificed people would demand Mcnabb back. I already see evidence of that. Look for Mcnabb back the rest of the way and Andy doesn't have to deal with anymore QB controversy.

Messy as I thought and so tired of the ESPN crew, Keshan, Boomer, etc claiming Eagles fans are spoiled. This mess wouldn’t be allowed to go on for the last few years say if this team was Dallas, they would have pulled Reid and or McNabb a while ago. I think all of us fans understand that it may take a few years to get this team together under a different QB and head coach just as every other team in our division has had major changes the last few years and have improved. Farve, Warner, and even Flacco play with a will to win and determination not this relaxed mode play. This kind of attitude has to effect everyone on the team which comes from up high. If all is fair Kolb would need the same amount of time McNabb had his first few years in the NFL to develop. But I agree under Andy’s management he’d be doomed with really antiquated play calls, poor draft choices, etc. Even defense can only get it together for 2 quarters.

How can you call for McNabb to go and not Andy Reid as well? What Reid has done to this organization from top to bottom is clearly enough to be fired. His idea of offense is a pathetic joke. His poor drafting is bad enough but his unwillingness to admit mistakes like Considine makes it that much worse. He has to go. Lurie has to be man enough to do what he MUST do.

Clearly, McNabb isn't the answer but neither is Kolb. Reid should have recognized that because Kolb has never impressed, even in pre-season when he got playing time. With any luck, we'll get a good draft pic out of this fiasco and can draft a real QB who can start in a couple years.

Actually McNabb will probably be happy. Next year he will be in Minnesota with a great running game, a receiver who can run deep routes, and a coach he is comfortable with; he will make the playoffs with the Vikings and has a chance at doing some damage. Meanwhile here in Philadelphia, it will be Groundhog Day yet again.

I still say the team, as a whole, has become a reflection of its coach. They will finish below .500, move the QB, then fail miserably in 2009 and 2010. Sometime thereafter, Lurie will see that the coach is the real problem. This team has regressed to the level of its coach.

Everyone who thinks this is the end of the Andy Reid era think again. Donovan is going to be the organization's scapegoat that saves Andy's job. And then when they fail next year we will be reminded that they are in "rebuilding mode". I wouldn't expect to see the end of the Reid era till 2010 at the earliest. So prepare for another 2 years of mediocre football, 70/30 passing ratios, inability to manage the clock and being told how he has to put players in positions to make plays. So when do pitchers and catchers report again?

Andy has nearly completely blown this team apart. Kolb is not ready to lead this team but with Donovan looking so bad there is no one else. Reid has not make provisions to replace the two aged offensive tackles nor his franchise RB, who looks old and slow. Benching L.J. was a good move except Celek didn't show much improvement. The team is in poor shape and is done for '08. A coaching change is due at the end of the year.

It's looking like it did at the end of the Randall Era, QB after several injuries just doesn't seem to have any game left or any incentive. It would not be unusual for a palyer to subconsciously be hindered by that fear of another injury that will require a long painful rehab. Maybe after a few years of resting somewhere like Randall, he'll come back and have one more good year. before it ends completely.

Time to open a rebuilding chapter with firing coach first then Mcnabb. Reid could never recover from the personal problems with his family and McNabb is hearing footsteps.

Eagles have to move forward. Many young QB's are doing well in the league. Its time for new management. The draft picks have turned out to be avg players. Play calling is terrible. Really, Lurie needs to blow this up.

Feels like the beginning of the Kotite years again.

Rich, the "franchise" has been abysmal the past few weeks. Actually, so has the organization. Reid is in panic mode. I think even he can see some writing on the wall

I am quite embarrassed to be an Eagles fan. Reid's utter mismanagement of this team that I've supported all my life is just disgusting. Today's game hopefully will highlight his ineptitude enough that a fundamental coaching change will be made. Mr. Lurie, please do not be blind.

Might as well do it now. We have to see if we have the second coming of Bobby Hoying or not.

Well said, Rich, but do you think this is also the end of the Andy Reid era?

About Rich Hofmann
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest. Rich has blogged the postseasons of the Flyers and Eagles.
