Emery in goal vs. Columbus

POSTED: Monday, January 18, 2010, 5:00 PM

We interrupt Captaingate to bring some news: Goalie Ray Emery will make his second straight start Tuesday when the Flyers host Columbus.

Emery, in his first NHL appearance since Dec. 5, wasn't sharp in a 5-3 loss in Washington Sunday.

Coach Peter Laviolette defended Emery's performance.

"Ray has to get back in there and get some games, and this is an opportunity for him to jump right back in there," the coach said after Monday's practice in Voorhees. "We need to do a little better job of taking care of the puck in front of him. Some of those goals, we put him in a bad position _ the ones that go cross ice, the backdoor goals are hard to handle, breakaways, a penalty shot against (Alex) Ovechkin. We want to give him a better game in front of him."

On Tuesday, the Flyers start a critical six-game homestand, their longest of the season.

"These six games could potentially make or break our season," center Jeff Carter said.

Ian Laperriere, observing the media flap with Mike Richards, walked through the locker room making peace signs with his fingers. "Peace and love. Let's all be friends here," he said with a toothless smile.

About 1,500 tickets remain for Tuesday's game against Ken Hitchcock's Blue Jackets. Fans will be given Orange Crush baseball caps.

so 1 "poor" game where 3 goals couldn't have been stopped by even Brodeur is enough for a replacement when one bad game 5 goals were given up and 2 should have been saved by a farm system goalie equals another game in net?

Carter is a cherry picker and doesn't hustle, and for his size he is NOT physical AT ALL, this guy could be a beast but he just doesn't posess the hustle

Captaingate? How cute, Sam. Again with the alterior moves. Your hidden agendas sicken me. Please stick to REPORTING, and leave the drama to the loser Eagles.

Package Carter together with someone else who makes financial sense and try to land Kovalchuk. He doesn't know the meaning of the word defense either, but at least he can put the puck in the net. He also passes. Carter's next NHL pass will be his first.

I don't understand why Emery started the Caps game in the first place. Gotta stick with the hottest hand. Especially when they're in danger of not making the playoffs.

Seriously Sam. First you got your poor feelings hurt when Emery dissed you, now its captaingate? You belong in a city like Indianapolis or Kansas City

I'd prefer they stick with the hot hand, but if the coach feels that Leighton is "just lucky" and the only way they can get deep is if Emery is sharp, I guess you play Emery. Does this team seriously believe it can do any damage in the playoffs? I don't see it.

I don't know why people are attacking Sam. I'm not a fan of his, but the captain of a hockey team should not be going after the media. Focus on your team that now has a losing streak and let the writers write whatever they want. They're doing their jobs, so go play hockey.

Geniuses. The team sucks so attack the guy reporting how and why they suck. Brilliant.

i'm still trying to figure out what city this paper is from... every time there's a picture of Emery it's of him getting scored on, usually followed by a caption that connotes he's no good and/or was mean to a reporter. this guy wonders why Emery et al aren't all that sociable to him?

Hey Sam - the more junk your write about Richards, the less he can focus on hockey. Watch Chris Pronger's interview on the Flyers website after the sunday loss. Even he's ticked. So get a life. Are you that desparate for readers! Yes, Emery wasn't sharp. Even I could see that (and I guess you know more about hockey than I do, because I never took a course in sleezy reporting), so that's relevant to point out. But just report on hockey already!

captaingate? Sam, you are the only one making a hoopla about the whole situation. Quit creating drama where none exists.

the captain of a hockey team should be answering questions about the game he just played. A "real" reporter would know to hold off on asking questions that have nothing to do with hockey. If Sam's feelings were hurt when being called out by Mikey, grow up. Its not the first time he has started something with a Philly athlete. *see Brett Myers

Hey Sam, no one is interested in your bias. Stick to reporting the facts, not antagonizing athletes.

Captaingate? I think a better term would be "incompetent-beat-writer-gate".

"They're doing their jobs, so go play hockey." The reporters job in a post game press conference is to talk about the game that just happened, not try and repair their own egos because a hockey player has problems with their reporting. "Captaingate" and "Captain Whine" is not journalism, it's junior high bickering

we could all just get along if Laviolette can get these guys to play. and ditto the general theme of feedback. good golly MissMolly! 'tis an accomplishment stirring emotion from Richards, but your method (mr carchidi) is dubious at best. at worst - esp given the obvious motivation, just wrong. cheap.

Captain Richie is in way over his head. He's way too immature to lead this team and if he doesn't grow some thicker skin, the press and the fans will eat him alive. Oh, and while he's trying to find his 'nads, he ought to look for his brain too. You don't have to be a mental giant to know that the press/fans will leave you alone when you are winning and will come after you like a spider monkey when you are stinking up the joint. Richie this is not just a blip. You guys have been blipping for a year now.

Carchidi should go back to South Jersey HS coverage, if the height of his witticism is "Captaingate".

Hey look, 17 opened his mouth about something with pearls of wisdom. Just wake up, Jeff? How about 10 goals in the next six games and make everyone happy.

Captaingate ..... nice touch Sam. Please continue to ask our pampered captain tough pointed questions until they become a solid play-off team. Then, you can concentrate on questions about winning only! In fact, how about a couple of salvos to 17 about his social life. There has to be some reason why he is such a pedestrian player this season!!!

Thanks for some real news Sam. Emery was hung out to dry, but he also didn't look completely healthy to me. Hopefully I'm completely wrong about that, otherwise he'll likely be on the IR again very soon. How can you not like Laperriere? Just an even-keel hard working hockey player.

When there's actual hockey analysis, or even reporting, coming from any these writers, pinch me, I may be dreaming.
