In case you missed it, Donovan McNabb was the focus of an episode of "Homecoming with Rick Reilly" that aired last night on ESPN. The show was taped in May at McNabb's high school. Mount Carmel in Chicago.

Among the guests were Brian Dawkins, Chris Cooley, McNabb's family.

A few highlights:

* Asked whether he would have taken a backseat if the Eagles had asked him to in order to let Kevin Kolb play, McNabb said flatly, "No." Why? "I'm not a backup."

* His best moment with the Eagles? "Holding up that NFC Championship trophy, that confetti flying, feeling that we just got over the hump, being on the podium and holding the trophy, which leads to wanting to do that on the bigger stage and hopefully getting to win a Super Bowl."

* Cooley on his reaction when he heard about the trade after getting calls and text messages from friends: "This is one of the top 10 biggest bonehead trades in the history of the NFL."

* Cooley said he heard McNabb's initial interviews after the trade and the quarterback was saying his name incorrectly. That got a chuckle from McNabb. Cooley said he thought, "This guy doesn't even know my name."

* Cooley on McNabb's arrival: "It’s been great from the minute he got there. It’s been fantastic. You wouldn’t know he hasn’t been our teammate for the last 10 years. He’s stepped right in as a leader, as a friend ... "

The Eagles hosted a workout for linebacker David Veikune yesterday, according to Adam Caplan, of Foxsports.com.

Veikune, 6-2, 257, was a second-round pick (52nd overall) of the Cleveland Browns in 2009 and was cut last week. He played collegiaitely at Hawaii.

He appeared in 10 games last season, making him ineligible to be placed on the practice squad for any team. If he were to sign, he would have to be added to the 53-man roster.

According to Caplan, teams were reluctant to put in a waiver claim for Veikune because he still had some guaranteed money left on his rookie deal.

The NFL Network is reporting that wide receiver David Clowney was in town for a workout as well, although by the end of yesterday, Clowney had re-signed with the Jets.

Who is Shaun Hill, the guy who will start at quarterback for the Lions against the Eagles? The Detroit Free Press takes a look.

The Eagles return to practice today. We will have a full report from the NovaCare Complex.

Wait till Cooley starts getting those hand grenades thrown at his feet with frequent regularity. He'll be singing a different tune then.

So how did Celek become a budding star with McNabb . . . must have hands on his feet.

Washington's defense keeps them in games, but last year Jason Campbell blew all the close plays and games. Even if McNabb shows his age and begins his decline, he'll win some of the close ones that Campbell would have lost. Now we're stuck with an animal abuser as QB. McNabb loves to laugh...he'll probably get the last laugh here.

Does picking up Velkune bode ill for Bradley's future? It certainly can not be viewed as a vote of confidence for his quick return to the lineup.

It wasn't McNabb, never was. It was Reid, his inability to coach on game day and his system. That fact will prove out this season.

McNabb BEGIN to decline? He's declined quite a bit already. If he still had the mobility and durability he had 5 years ago, he'd still be an Eagle. His ability to make plays scrambling and to withstand the battering from pass rushers, has declined considerably, and that was what made up for his shortcomings in accuracy and decision making. Of course, McNabb would have done better than Kolb did Sunday.

Ron, I think this move bodes more poorly for the future of omar gaither, who was horrific on sunday. i like omar, seems like a real good guy, but he never really contributed much, and at this point can't be relied on for anything other than special teams.

Les BowenLes Bowen has covered the Eagles for the Daily News since 2002. Before that, he spent nearly 13 years covering the Flyers. It took Les only a few seasons after the switch to figure out that there was no penalty box at the Linc, and that the time really wasn't his, despite what Andy Reid kept saying. Les came to Philadelphia and the Daily News from Charlotte in 1983. In the intervening years, he has pretty much lost track of NASCAR, and his accent. He, his wife Barbara, and their two sons live in Haddon Township, New Jersey. E-mail Les at bowenl@phillynews.com and follow him on Twitter.

Paul DomowitchPaul Domowitch has been with the Daily News since 1982. He has spent most of his nearly 3 decades with the paper covering the Eagles and pro football. For the last 10 years, he’s been a selector for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. A native of Wilkes-Barre and a graduate of Wilkes University, Domo started his career in Texas, working first for the Midland Reporter-Telegram (1976-78), and then for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, where he covered some god-awful Texas Ranger baseball teams. His first beat at the Daily News actually was boxing, which he covered just long enough to lose 2 sports coats to blood spatter before moving on to football. Domo and his wife Shelley, a University of Oklahoma grad who still hasn’t gotten over that Fiesta Bowl loss to Boise State 5 years ago, have 2 terrific daughters -- Allison, 28, who is an attorney in South Jersey, and Amy, 25, who works in administration for a professional baseball team.
