Do you like the addition of Alex Smith?
Yes
No

The Eagles have confirmed that they have signed tight end Alex Smith and released tight end Tony Curtis.

Smith, a former third-round pick by Tampa Bay, was recently released by the New England Patriots. There was some thought that New England might trade Smith in exchange for former Eagles quarterback A.J. Feeley, but both players ended up being released.

Curtis, a former Dallas tight end, appeared to have made the Eagles' roster with a strong performance against the New York Jets in the Eagles' preseason finale, but Smith is a more experienced pass catcher. Curtis has just 11 career receptions, while Smith has 129 career catches for 1,252 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The Patriots surrendered a fifth-round draft pick for Smith during the offseason. After being released by the Patriots, Smith made a visit with the New York Giants.

Why didn't we go out and try to get Pope from Arizona? Blocking is suspect but, he can catch the ball consistently.

Alex Smith, as #2 or #3 TE, is an upgrade from Tony Curtis. There's no other way to look at the signing. It would be fantastic if the Eagles could have a pro-bowler at every position, but that is unrealistic. Brent Celek displayed in last year's playoffs that he can be a #1 TE. I still think it's a shame (of course, with the help of hindsight) that they drafted Ingram in the 5th round, when they could have taken Jared Cook from South Carolina in the 3rd round. And they still would have had 2 or 3 5th round picks to use for Hobbs (who himself is an upgrade from Joselio Hanson as #3 CB). They had like 4 or 5 5th round picks, so I don't see that they needed to keep trading in the 3rd round and avoid taking a FULLY HEALTHY TE. Plus, if they drafted Cook, I would have accurately predicted the first 3 rounds of the Eagles draft.

This is a great pickup for what is out there and what they need. Why do some people need to complain about EVRYTHING! Your lives must be so miserable. I wonder why they couldn't just work out a trade for this guy for feeley, since we cut him anyway.

Eagles are going nowhere this year. They have substandard talent at many positions due to injuries. The OL is a disaster waiting to happen. Even if a miracle occurred and they made it to the Superbowl they are inferior to any AFC opponent they would face.

@ Scars. If they traded Feeley to New England, his 1.3 mil salary would be guarenteed if he was on the week 1 roster. Since New England seems to want him and Heather Mitts lives in Boston, I'm sure there is a handshake agreement in place for Feeley to sign after week 1 for the vet minimum or close to it.
