Roseman: 'Trying to Win' not Rebuilding

POSTED: Friday, April 2, 2010, 7:55 AM

Is sending Chris Gocong and Sheldon Brown to the Cleveland a good move by the Eagles?
Yes
No

In a conference call with reporters Friday afternoon, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman denied that a series of moves unloading veterans -- the latest being today's trade of CB Sheldon Brown and LB Chris Gocong to Cleveland for fourth- and fifth-round draft picks and LB Alex Hall -- is a signal that the team is rebuilding.

"We're trying to win. We're always trying to win," Roseman said, "For us, this is a football decision. We're excited about some of the players on our team and we're excited about the quality of the draft."

The Eagles have shed RB Brian Westbrook, DE Darren Howard, G Shawn Andrews, LB Will Witherspoon, WRs Kevin Curtis and Reggie Brown and DE Chris Clemons, in addition to Brown and Gocong, and apparently are attempting to trade franchise QB Donovan McNabb.

"All those veterans have been good players for us, and I don't want to slight those guys at all," Roseman said. "As we looked at it going forward, and this year and what kind of team we wanted to build, we saw an opportunity to do that (get younger) and obviously, it won't take full shape until we get to minicamp and even farther than that, but we have a direction, we have a plan, and we're just trying to execute it. Sometimes, when you look at it piecemeal, it doesn't all come together."

The fourth- and fifth-round picks are 105th and 137th overall in what is said to be a deep, talented draft.

Roseman touted CB Ellis Hobbs, coming off a serious neck injury, as Brown's successor, but a first-round cornerback in the draft certainly looks quite possible now.

“We like Ellis Hobbs," Roseman said. "Ellis Hobbs was a starter on a team that was 18-0. We think Ellis Hobbs is a good starting corner in this league. We think we have other players on this team who can step into that spot and contribute. Obviously we have some options here going forward in the draft and we’ll just see what other things become available here.”

Roseman also mentioned nickel corner Joselio Hanson as a possibility.

Hall, 6-5, 250, played in 14 games last season with no starts and had 10 tackles. He started two games as a rookie in 2008 and finished with 28 tackles. He also has three career sacks and played on special teams.

Hall was a seventh-round pick by the Browns from Division II St. Augustine’s, where he played defensive end. He was the school's career leader in sacks with 26.

“Alex is going to come in here and compete for a spot," Roseman said. "We’re going to start him off at [strongside] linebacker, at least on first and second downs. He’ll have an opportunity to put his hand down on third down, as well. [Hall is an] interesting prospect for us. He was productive for Cleveland a couple years ago and didn’t have as much of an opportunity in the last year.”

With the additional picks, the Eagles now have 10 selections in the draft: 1st round (24th overall), 2nd round (55), 3rd round (70, from Seattle), 3rd round (87), 4th round (105, from Cleveland), 4th round (121), 5th round (137, from Cleveland), 6th round (200, from Indianapolis), 7th round (243, compensatory pick), and 7th round (244, compensatory pick).

"I think it allows us to have a lot of options on draft weekend," Roseman said. "If we wanted to go and move up or move around, I think that gives us those options.”

On the trade, coach Andy Reid said in a statement: “Sheldon Brown has been a very good football player for the Eagles over the last eight years. He’s a good person, a legitimate tough guy and he’ll do a good job helping the Browns. Chris did a good job converting from defensive end to linebacker and helped us win a lot of football games. We wish both of them all of the best.”

Added Roseman, “Sheldon and Chris have been nothing but professionals on and off the field during their tenure in Philadelphia and we wish them all the best as they continue their careers in Cleveland. Alex Hall is a big, athletic linebacker who we’ve had our eyes on over the last couple of years and he’ll have a chance to compete at the SAM linebacker spot.”

Apparently, Brown is getting his long-sought contract adjustment, which was the final piece of the trade puzzle. The Browns are believed to have added money to this coming season.

Brown, his agents and Gocong and his agent did not return messages this morning.

Brown, 31, has been disgruntled with his contract, signed in 2004, and last spring requested a trade. He skipped the team's voluntary minicamp but reported on time for training camp and had one of his better seasons, including a career-high five interceptions. He also played through a hamstring injury.

At the owners' meeting last week, Reid said the Eagles had received "a few" inquiries about Brown, and added this: "The nice thing with Sheldon is he’s still under contract and been able to make a living. We’ll just take it from there. We’ll see what happens over time."

Gocong has been the subject of trade discussions for quite some time, as he never became the pass rusher the Eagles expected. He played strongside linebacker for the Eagles, but Judge reports he would move inside with the Browns. Gocong signed his restricted free agent tender earlier this week. The Eagles tendered him at the original third-round level.

Asked about the strongside linebacker situaton last week, Reid said, "You’ve got Chris (Gocong) and (Moise) Fokou. We’ll see what happens there."

The connections between the Eagles and Browns have been well-documented. New Browns general manager Tom Heckert formerly held that same position with the Eagles, and Reid and new Browns president Mike Holmgren are best friends.

*

As for the McNabb situation, Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt was asked about McNabb yesterday, despite the Cardinals consistently denying they are interested.

"As of right now, he's with another football team so it's not something I can comment on," Whisenhunt said, according to the Arizona Republic. "I've known Donovan from being on the field with him, and he's a good football player and a good person. Hopefully, things work out for him the way he wants it to."

Hate to see Sheldon go but Gocong was going to cut anyway because he belongs on the outside in a 3-4 alignment. Browns have a ton of draft picks so I hope it is at least a 3rd rounder

lol I love how people get so fired up about how the Eagles talk to the media about trades and what not...seriously people, what exactly do you want them to say? "Ummm yea, we don't want to deal with this guy anymore, he's getting old, wants more money, and if someone else wants him we'll trade him...". My guess is that you people are either 15 years old, or work at 7-11 where negatively speaking about employees to the public is the norm..

Funny, typical move for the birds. Trade away quality (not great) players who just past their peak for draft picks. Good way to perpetuate the norm of a "competative team" but not a Championship Team. Championship teams have leadership which requires veterans. This team is absent any decernable leadership now that Dawk, Westbrook, Runyan, now Brown are all gone.

@ Dr Mike If you bothered to read, the article notes that the Eagles confirmed the discussions. So Clark Judge reported it, and the Inky confirmed the reports with an Eagles source. They can't be the first to report everything Eagles, and it would be poor journalism to NOT mention that Clark Judge reported it first. Quit whining.

Boy I sure hope the Eagles know what the #$% they are doing. I envisioned Brown possibly moving to Free Safety. Of course he would have had to do that to try to replace Dawkins whom the Eagles never replaced. I hope the McNabb deal is done and we can address the defense in the draft. Even so it is asking a lot of a rookie to come in and start defensively for the Birds.

Great move. Next time dont sign an 8 year extension. Rebuild while we are a good team is the smart way to go. Would you rather them be detroit? Everyone hated when we wasted draft picks on sheldon and lito when we had vincent and taylor. Just relax and stop being haters, nobody wins the superbowl ever year, teams dont even make the playoffs once every 10 years. but we are competitive every year and thats bc the organization plays it smart. its not MLB where you can just spend spend spend. Sometimes Eagles fans are so dumb.

Heard about this two weeks ago from a friend who works with the Eagles and I laughed it off. However, Sheldon's has been banged up and is surely to be slowed by injury. The Eagles should keep him, and move him to the safety position. Why? Because we don't have one.

I would say deal Brown but not Gocong. Sheldon is starting to get like Lito. So I say trade them for 2 extra picks and make one pick to move up in the draft to have more of a chance of drafting a great player. There's a possibility and is Likely Taylor Mays will be there at 24, But Who know the whole city says draft a Safety , but y'all want a Linebacker. So it's The Office and staff decision. I say not in in the draft with this trade and draft Eric Berry or y'all could stay at 24 with some extra picks in the draft because of this Gocong & Brown to Cleveland deal and Draft a Linebacker,Safety, or Defensive End, But Doubt it will be a Defensive End. I say draft Taylor Mays WE'RE FAVORED BY ESPN TO DRAFT HIM.

Gocong should stay and Sheldon needs to be payed! Banner needs to understand that he is only in that position, because he and Lurie are childhood friends. How did the kid who did not play sports end up running a pro football team? Not qualified.

Their doing a hell of a job dumping salaries this year. When McNabb's gone they be close to approaching the cap floor, oh that's right, there is no cap floor this year... THey stand to make a hell of a profit this year. I guess they're stockpiling money for the potential of no football in 2011. I guess we see now where the priorities lie for the "Gold Standard" in the NFL.

It will be disapointing to see Sheldon go, the ONLY D.B that actually knows how to hit on this team. Gocong has been terrible, so anything we get for him is a bonus. Not sure of a player we would want from the Browns, unless they have a decent center.

Hard to say if this is good. We don't know what we'd be getting. If Brown can get his hamstring back totally healthy, he was one of the top 10 corners in the NFL last year. Better to pay him on that level if they're sure he'll be up to full speed. The fans are down on Gocong; McDermott doesn't seem to be high on him; but I see a good guy, a solid player, and you gotta have at least 6 good linebackers. If Sheldon is full speed, and that's an if, he's worth more money than Asante Samuel (which doesn't mean he's worth 8 million or whatever ridiculous figure Samuel pulls in.) I'd trade Samuel and use the extra money on Brown.

Can't imagine why there is so much uproar here. A lot of posters say they're willing to take a step back by turning to Kolb, so why should the rest of the roster be any different? If you're gonna take that step backward, then rebuild for God's sake.

Don't get - from a football standpoint - why they're trading Shelden without having someone better to replace him. I thought Banner's PR campaign against him was ill-advised and it seems it is hurting the team again.

This adds validity to the McNabb to Raiders deal in my mind. They have that stud corner (can't think of his name) with one year left on his deal. No room for him with Sheldon here, but with him going to Cleveland??? Still alot of money to the corner position (Assante) for the Birds...

Stockpiling draft picks in this draft is a real good idea. This draft, if the experts are right, is very deep in top defensive talent. A few extra picks makes it possible to move up and get the guys they want. I like the players added recently, Bell, Tapp, Jackson and Baskett. I hope they go O-line first and defense after that.

That's why shows like Daily News Live etc. inferior; they bring in people like Bowen, Domo, Donnellon, etc. to speak about the 4 major sports teams. Those guys are just like you and me. I went to school in Boston and worked in NYC for 4-5 years, and the local Phila sports media is by far the worst when it comes to actual reporting and breaking stories.

yo, birdseed - some fans here are whining because that's what they do. It doesn't matter what direction the front office steers the team, it's always the wrong move and the whiners would do it differently. Whiners don't live in the real world where the teams of real fans don't make the playoffs every year. SOME of Philly has a sense of entitlement like they are owed the Super Bowl 'cause the team has been so good for so long. Ironically, it's the same front office that has made the team so good for so long that they whine about now. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

God, this organization is dumb i hate being a philly kid i wonder what it's like being a chicago kid. I love the Bears hate the cubs. But I don't wanna live here anymore i don't wanna go to school here anymore philly teams are sooo stupid. Why would the Eagles not re-sign B-Dawk , Why would the Phillies trade Cliff Lee knowing they could've kept him and still get Halladay? Why wouldn't the Sixers cut-ties with Andre Iguodala and get something better for him like Amar'e Stoudimire or Tracy McGrady? Why did the Sixers sign a washed up Elton Brand? Why are the Sixers even wasting their money on Elton Brand on a huge contract? Why are the Sixers going through so many coaches that suck? see what I mean Philly teams are stupid. Lurie you're a JOKE, Snider,Stefanski,Jordan YOU'RE ALL A BUNCH OF STUPID CLOWNS. Ruben Amaro YOU'RE A DUMMY WHY WOULD YOU TRADE Cliff Lee knowing we could've kept him and still got Halladay? But I wonder what you will think when the Yankees will take over next season when they go for every best player on the market. They're interested in Jayson werth annnnnnd Cliff Lee. Let's see if you think if the NL can win the World Series when most players next off-season Be in Pin stripes next season. I hope you sign Cliff Lee when the next Off-Season begins. Because Yankees like to loet everyone know who they're interested in. STUPID PHILLY TEAMS!!! You minus well replace the Eagles with the Passion . And tell whatever network that shows the eagles to start showing the Passion, Philadelphia minus well buy a Woman's basketball team. They'll probally do better than the stupid guys. PHILLY TEAMS ARE STUPID AND B-R-O-K-E

If they trade Sheldon Brown, I will be fully convinced they will sell McNabb thus forfeiting 2010 and beyond. It was a good run folks...sad to see it end, you don't replace franchise quarterbacks with career backups and a never-was QB who was in jail. Sad that we are contemplating passing up McNabb for Kolb and even more reprehensibly Vick. I hope wherever McNabb goes, he wins it all. I'm now pulling for the 49ers to make a strong push for him.

MisterGarrison - what exactly is your point? First of all, the Bucs didn't win the Super Bowl in 2004. So I suggest getting your information correct before clamoring like a 5 year old boy who was picked last in dodgeball. Whatever you are trying to argue with your terrible examples just isn't working. Who cares is the Bucs were bad one year, and what about the 4th and 26 catch? Learn something about the game and then you can post on here.... MMMMMMMkay?

These blogs are great. I can sit back and here the "What about Dawk?" "Hope Dawk is doing well, can I fluff his pillow?" They are the same kids who complain on the Phillies blog about why they let Lee go. It's good to know that the morons who share there comments on this site have nothing to do with running the teams in Philly.

yo, Garrison - "the bucs collapsed" and "4th and 26" were the only reasons we made the playoffs? That's your logic? OK, now I'm feeling it. We were lucky, not good. We were lucky that the Bucs didn't play well or we wouldn't have made the playoffs. Alrighty then, the Saints were lucky this year 'cause we collpased, right? The Eagles should change their name to one of the following: Nine and Seveners . . . Eight and Eighters . . . or Mediocerers. Because under this regime, that is precisely what they will give us. Not a great team, not a good one, not a horrible team, and not a bad one. 8-8 . . . 9-7 . . . maybe sometimes 10-6 . . . and then when it counts the most, 0-1 or 1-1 in the playoffs. Go Phillies.

@Dr. Michael: I doubt you realize how disconnected from real life your opinion is. First, It's very rare for a hometown executive to leak the names of your own players during a trade (too much to lose if the trade doesn't go through); Second, Judge's sources were (based on his recent extensive reporting on all things Cleveland) from Cleveland; Third, Judge writes a blog for CBS Sportsline with a different set of rules for sourcing; Fourth; Judge is many times wrong. Would you similarly scold a health care reporter because they were scooped by Fox News on "death panels"? Why don't you wait and see how the *rumored* trade works out first! (The answer to your Community College question, before you ask, none of them. It was Villanova, Penn State and Oregon Health Sciences University.)

Dr.Michael, mikeyhigs is absolutely right. Crediting another news outlet with publishing a story first is longstanding journalistic practice, and independently confirming the story is what professional journalists do. Local papers do not have the same resources as national news outlets and cannot always be first. This was reported correctly and attributed correctly.

personally a little suprised that brown and gocong would not warrant more than 2 mid-level picks lower than when they were drafted themselves especially brown a quality CB, plus a scrub. More purge I guess. Plus, this makes room for Hobbs, who they tendered, and maybe the cb in Oakland, if that speculated Mcnabb deal is even somewhat true. -not bob levy

Cletis- I totally agree with you. Go Ravens! At least the Ravens didn't wait so many years to get Flacco offensive weapons unlike the Eagles did with McNabb. The Ravens are one of the eight teams with restrictions with signing free agents, yet they improved way more than the Eagles. Eagles == Cheap, stop wasting your time on this team. They won't give D-Jax a big contract either, since they hate spending over 4 million a year on a player. Go Ravens!

Interesting to see the Eagles stockpiling draft picks for this year's draft. I'm expecting a package of picks + McNabb to move up in the draft and snag a top flight defensive player (such as they are, at draft-time).

this is a good move, brown's career has maybe 2 years max left. Let's get realisitc about Dawk - he did not have a great year last year- early on he was solid but his team collapsed at the end. Players get old so fast in this league. I'm one of the believers in the Birds front office - I'm old enough to have experienced what seemed decades of futility, so give me a blueprint that makes them ultra competitive and if they play meaningful football in December and into january, I'm happy.

Reid's two best picks were McNabb and Westbrook. That makes up for a lot of so-so and less than so-so picks. The queston is whether Reid can draft another player capable of raising the level of the entire team. But the defense has become progressively softer since Reid took over. The days of Vincent, Taylor, Dawkins, Hollis Thomas and a productive Hugh Douglas are long gone (not to mention Jim Johnson). This team is not going to contend for a SB now, so I want Kolb to start.

Alex Hall is a big, athletic linebacker who we’ve had our eyes on over the last couple of years and he’ll have a chance to compete at the SAM linebacker spot.”...already puppet-- Howie Roseman. I hate that line and he aleady used it. The numbers tell all: Hall, 6-5, 250, played in 14 games last season with no starts and had 10 tackles. He started two games as a rookie in 2008 and finished with 28 tackles. He also has three career sacks and played on special teams. If that's what he kept his eyes on were in deep deep trouble. Hate that line. Such a puppet.

I'm sure they have a plan, but I have been saying that for a while now. I understand the move, just don't quite like the compensation, but Sheldon is starting on the downside of his career. So does this mean the trade rumors with Oakland and their corner are true? He would only be a one year rental, and probably a waste at that with a lot of holes left...

Wow a starting cb and backup de/olb for a backup old and a couple draft picks. Hobbs better be 100% and don't miss on the picks. I can't see how this helps the team in the near future. Losing Shepard didn't hurt as much. I throw Sheldon Brown in with Dawkins, Westbrook, Trotter (the first time), really tough to fine athletic quality and personal character to replace them.
  • 0 like this / 0 don't   •   Posted 1:11 PM, 04/02/2010
This a great move. Brown is 31. The Eagles were probably going to draft a corner anyway to play behind him, as they did when they drafted Brown to play behind Taylor and Vincent. Now they will draft one to play behind Hobbs. They do not lose much (one year of Hobbs instead of Brown) and gain two picks in a strong draft...and get younger. That's how strong teams remain strong. Sad perhaps, love Brown, but a great move nonetheless.

THIS DEFENSE STINKS: Trent Cole and Samuels are only decent players. Bradley - knee injury, Fokou, Gaither, Mikell, Marlin Jackson- knee injury, Mikell, Bunkley and Patterson... Abiamiri & Laws - could be cut and non one would pick them up. The defense with or without mcnabb is going to cause us to miss the playoffs. The Only hope is that McNabb is dealt. We somehow draft 3 legitimate starters on def. Kolb steps in and plays like Brees. Meaning, he gets the ball out quickly and accurately, so this patchwork online doesnt get exposed.

If the Eagles actually won a super bowl, then reeked the next season, posters here would blast them for not being competitive. The idea is always to get to the playoffs and at least have a chance at the super bowl. Look at the flack the Phillies are taking, particularly Amaro, AFTER winning three division titles and appearing in two World Series. Eagles are a smart organization, unlike say, the Washington Redskins. If you don't like the Eagles, surrender your season tickets and let one of the thousands of fans on the waiting list get them.

Football move? You don't trade your leaders if you are trying to win. If they would of traded Asante, that would of been a football move. Brown was so they would not have to pay him. 5 is being traded due to Kolb going to be cheaper to resign next offseason. Stop the lying.

I like how people keep throwing in the "rebuilding" lol. This team isn't rebuilding it's unloading. This team wants to have a low overall salary. It's taking place all over the league right now. The well is dried up on free agents making any serious money this offseason. All of the players left out on the market now will have to beg for a job. If I was the players union rep I would change my mindset on giving any consolations. I think that every team who received tax dollars to build their stadium should give all of that money back plus interest if they decide on a lockout. It's not just the players that are affected they also affect local business and stadium merchants.

I really hope they are not planning to put Hobbs in there as a starter. They have to have some type of plan in place for that spot. The 4th/5th round picks will really get you nothing as far as moving up significantly. This team is dumping their entire identity...starting all over. Sheldon was arguably the only remaining leader on defense...so we went from minimal leadership to pretty much none. Stewart Bradley still has a ton to prove so don't tell me he is our new man.

Love the quotes saying the Eagles don't want to win it all. They do just enough to make the fans think they care but not enough to win it all. Classic. Here's the scene at NovaCare - front office staff huddled around a table with a chance to make a trade, one says to the other "but this might put us over the top". The other says "you're right, we can't make that trade". Unbelievable what SOME of you posters write. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Banner should have found a way to keep Sheldon Brown. Who's going to scare receivers in the secondary, Asante Samuel? He only bumps receivers, Brown hits them hard. Good luck Sheldon, thank you.

They have 10 picks now. The 4 and 5 received today will be packaged with their 1 or 2 to move up a few slots and grab a gamechanger. Think long term. The eagles are really good at moving around the draft. Trent Cole is a fifth rounder. Celek was a middle-round guy too.

A 4th and a 5th doesn't seem like much for 2 projected starters. Admittedly, I don't know how high in the rounds the Browns are picking. I also don't know anything about Hall but he's a special teamer after 2 years so he's not exactly lighting it up. I say let's wait and see what other moves are in the works and judge the offseason as a whole rather than just free agent signings and trades. Does that make too much sense?

You have to rebuild sometime, right? Do you really think peppers would have helped us win a superbowl, nope. Oh thats right Sheldon "no pro bowls" Brown should be kept here and given a new contract bc he won how many super bowls? Yes you are an idiot. Will you still think its a bad move when we move up in 1st round and get Berry or Earl Thomas? For all you idiots ripping me, tell me what would help us win a superbowl? what move would you do? give an example instead of ripping them.. would love to hear this. oh lets keep mcnabb, he has won ummmm 0 superbowls, oh keep Dawk bc he is good guy rings on his fingers 0. You complain we get rid of these guys and dont want to win but they have won nothing!!!

Wah more crybaby comments from the fairweather fans. Sheldon was gone next year because he wasn't going to resign here so smart move to get something now. Furthermore, the secondary with him gave up 26 passing tds last year, not very good at all. And Gocong is easily replaceable and not very good. I can't believe the eagles got as much as they did from the browns. And its only April -- six more months for the eagles to make moves. Relax before you break your ankles jumping off the bandwagon.

These extra picks could mean moving up again this year, and you very well might find a team willing to part with an early pick this year for one next year, and a later round pick this year. If Berry, Haden or Thomas start to fall, they got to go after them, or hope the kid from Boise St falls to early 2nd. Samuel on the left, Hobbs on the right (another injury ?), Hanson as nickel, and then what...Macho moving back to CB, his college position, Marlin (injury ?) playing where, Demps disgruntled again???...how can you not say rebuilding? This doesn't begin to address OL, DE, LB and overall depth.

The Eagles are a confuse team now and I see no more than 6 wins next year, I am glad they finally got rid of Mr. pump faker always getting burned Sheldon Brown he will turn out to be some trash just like Lito Sheppard. With all the wheeling and dealing now it's time to get rid of Mr. Cheesesteak(Andy Reid) I bet you he was eating a cheese steak when the trade was made so he can have an excuse saying he had nothing to do with it.

DR. Michael. The news usually leaks from the NFL since it has to go to them first for approval. Since they are right by CBS in NY. It makes sense. It happens all the time. That's how the news flows in many trade situations. The Eagles don't want it out until signed sealed and delivered.

A good portion of the Eagles Fan base are lying to themselves when they feel like they can live with trading Mcnabb, going thru "growing pains" with Kobb for 2 or more seasons. The Eagles play in the toughest division. Every team will have gotten better EXCEPT for the Eagles if they trade Mcnabb. Dallas is getting better, Giants had a fluke season last year, and Washington has a SB coach down there. You fans clearly arent thinking with the Right side of your brain which controlls logic and reason. The Eagles for the past 7/8 seasons have been then favorite's in the NFC East. You surely will not be able to handle the Eagles being last in the division not making the playoffs as everyone else and their fans are in glee about the Eagles demise. That window is slowly closing as other division rivals are beggining to open back up. Kobb maybe more the "more accurate passer" , but so what if he throws pick-6's , and in football the most important intangible a team has is its momentum, which we all know an interception is devestating to a teams morale. Dont have knee jerk reactions about wanting to blow the team up thinking irrational and being emotional. Mcnabb gives us the best chance to win NOW! THINK!

Brown was the only memeber of the secondary who would put a lick on someone and was their best tackler. He also played through injuries without complaint. He's the only one of the bunch they let go I think was worth keeping, but he made the mistake of whining about the extension he signed - deadly move with this FO. They will go into this season with potentially the weakest defense of the Reid era, and possbly a young QB as a first time starter. I'll take a down year if they have any kind of plan to return to prominence next year, but I don't see it at all, especaillly the way they have butchered the QB situation and destroyed any chance of cashing in on this deep draft with a trade for a high pick. They fooled themselves with a good record against an extremely weak schedule last year, then got exposed by the hated Cowboys and realized they're no longer among the NFL's top teams. Too late. Time to turn attention to the Fightins.

rcastigs - You said that the Eagles' strategy is to "...remain a step above mediocre...never risk being horrible BUT also NEVER INSPIRE TO BE GREAT." You are speaking to the profit motive, no doubt. Well as an Eagles fan living in D.C. I can tell you that Dan Snyder looks for the profit...Jeff Laurie is looking for a championship...and will eventually get it. As for your oh so sage words of wisdom...the word you were looking for is aspire, not inspire. I hope to God that the Eagles aspire to be great and to win the Super Bowl because your posting doen't inspire anything at all!

I think Patterson & Bradley need to go too, maybe get a 2nd and 3rd rounder for them. That should help the Eagles win. We need some depth in the draft and thin the defensive experience. I really don't care what Sheldon Brown said, he played hurt and played hard all season. I will take his heart over a draft pick any day and I don't see how Hall gives the Eagles anything Gocong didn't have. Both had 4.7 speed but Gocong was 20 pounds heavier not too shabby at 260#.

What exactly do fans think keeping Sheldon and Gocong would have accomplished this year? Keep them so Sheldon could be the inspirational leader of a 9-7 or 10-6 team? Awesome. We all want this team win a championship, but even with McNabb, Sheldon, a beyond-aging Westbrook and 1 or 2 of the big name FA's (Peppers, Kampman, Dansby), this team still wouldn't have been good enough to win a SB, so why not begin the reubilding process. Are you really gonna criticize stockpiling picks in what EVERYONE agrees is the deepest draft in decades? Seems smart to me. I know that losing guys we've come to like is frustrating, but there's no point in keeping around players who were cornerstones of decent, but not great, teams. Look at the Steelers: they were awesome in the 90's and early 00's but never got a ring, suffered through an awful 2003 season yet held on to their coach while stockpiling young cornerstones (Polamalu, Harrison, Parker, Randle El, Ike Taylor, Larry Foote, etc.), then drafted and immediately played Big Ben, went 15-1 the first year and won a SB the next (and another a few years later). Don't you think in hindsight Steelers fans are ok having sat through Tommy Maddox and 6 wins in 2003?

While this move is concerning, it is way too early to judge the 2010 offseason moves until they are all done. I suspect more moves are coming. Historically, many of the Eagle decisions the fans didn't like have worked out, and Eagles have been competitive almost every year. Now in addition to needing a center, defensive end, linebacker, and safety, we have to add cornerback. If Tapp and Jackson work out, we are down to needing a center, linebacker, and cornerback. It is a deep draft at linebacker and cornerback, and I expect the Eagles are not done dealing. With 10 draft selections we should be able to trade or draft some talent to fill a few of these holes and add some depth.

So far this offseason the Eagles have dons nothing of impact to address the holes on the Offensive Line and Defensive CB/S positions. In fact, they have only made more holes and left more doubts. They believe they will become prospective Super Bowl contenders through the draft. So they want to build this team with rookies everywhere (which by the way sounds like re-building to me, Howie Roseman). And rookies won't win you a Super Bowl right now. In the meantime if they don't trade McNabb, the moves they've made this offseason (or lack thereof as veteran free agents came and went, but not to the Eagles) shows me no urgency on their part to get appreciably better immediately in order to take the fullest advantage of what Donovan McNabb is going to give you, which is pretty much what he gives you every season - if he's not injured, that is - which frustrates the hell out of me. And even if they do trade McNabb, they won't get what they originally hoped to get for him - oh, wait, they'll get even MORE draft picks! - so the makeup of the team becomes rookies, rookies and more rookies, which shows me that they are in fact re-building, which makes Howie Roseman a liar, but then he'll fit right in with the rest of the front office. Oh, and forget even a whiff of a Super Bowl for the forseeable future if that happens. The talent this team has cultivated over the Reid-McNabb era has been obscured and squandered by the lies and ultimately poor decisions that have hung that talent out to dry. And that is your Philadelphia Eagles.

OMG WOW.... THE MORE THEY DO WHAT THEY'RE DOING THE MORE THEY CAN FILL THOSE DAMN HOLES @ SAFETY,DEFENSIVE END,LINEBACKER,O-LINE, AND MAYBE CORNER, AND A QB. i HOPE THEY DRAFT ERIC BERRY OR TAYLOR MAYS AND SEAN WEATHERSPOON. DRAFT TAYLOR BRING HIM HERE HE'S THE HARD HITTIN SAFETY THAT COULD REPLACE B-DAWK. AND WON'T BE A JOKE . UNLIKE MACHO MAN AND QUINTEN . DEMPS THOUGHT THE JOB WAS GOING TO GET HANDED TO HIM AUTOMATICALLY BUT THEY GAVE IT TO A KID MR.MACHO. WHICH WAS A STUPID ROOKIE THTA LIKES TO ACT LIKE A DAMN VETERAN . SO WE NEED TAYLOR MAYS OR ERIC BERRY(UNLIKEY UNLESS THEY MOVE UP) HOPEFULLY TAYLOR MAYS.
