Eagles looking to bring in Maryland receiver, report says

The Eagles are hoping to arrange a private workout with Maryland receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
Heyward-Bey has already worked out with the Baltimore Ravens, who brought in quarterback Joe Flacco to throw to him. Tampa Bay reportedly has a visit scheduled and Minnesota is looking to arrange a visit.
Heyward-Bey posted the fastest time at the scouting combine this year, running the 40-yard dash in 4.3 seconds. He also measured 38 1/2 inches in the vertical jump.
The Eagles might have to move up to get him, if they were interested. Draft guru Mike Mayock suggested over the weekend that Heyward-Bey might be a good fit for Oakland with the seventh pick.
Since we know Eagles fans love discussions about receivers, USA Today put together its list of the top 12 wide receivers and the top four tight ends, according to NFLDraftScout.com. Click here.
Owumd...I stated exactly same a few weeks ago. Totally agree on those 4 being very good at WR. OT and RB are the two most pressing needs. Then, Center, Def Lineman, and OT again!! ginzo
Receiver is definately too much of a risk in the draft - besides we all know the Eagles will not pick a receiver in the first round - they will cost too much - best we can hope for is a late rounder to challenge the average group we have in camp - draft picks will go for RB, OL or TE unless Andy and Tom have a crazy idea that we need more Defensive lineman or something Tom Man- Brent Celek is the present and future TE. Might as well get used to it. Hopefully he'll bring his blocking skills somewhere close to his receiving talents. Pettigrew WILL NOT be an Eagle. If the Birds have a realistic shot at Andre Smith they'll go for it. Otherwise they'll stay put and grab Moreno, should he fall to them, or UConn's Brown plus an OT like Eben Britton or, my preference, Alex Mack to play center. No Pettigrew nor any WR in the first round. Bet on it.
jack v: please, continue to speak without respect to reality. The Eagles have drafted one receiver in the first round and three receivers in the second round under Andy Reid. By comparison, they've drafted one offensive lineman in the first round and two in the second round. There are three more positions on the offensive line than there are for receivers. owumd
remember, andy two weeks ago in california said defensive end, running back and another tight end are this teams real needs from the top of the draft. as a surprise he may draft two running backs early. the eagles under reid will NOT draft a receiver early. d.jacks early pick was a rarity which won't be repeated for a few years. JACK V
Take a RB with 21 and a TE or OL with 28. Then use the extra picks to move up in Round 2 and take Kenny Britt from Rutgers. Big, fast, good hands, several thousand yard receiving seasons. ArizonaMike
If there's no skill drafted in the 1st three rounds............. Onlineps2beast
Harvin = DeSean. The Birds need a tall WR who can actually play. Sorry, Hank. StopThePanic

knowshon moreno and pettigrew along with a ot nomatter how you package it CAVEMANJAMES
I would agree, RB is the #1 concern. The eagles shouldn't waste any high picks on WR's. dreinterests

The Eagles are basically right about receivers -- the first round is usually not the time to take one. If they take someone like Maclin or Heyward-Bey, it'll be because they think he stands out among all the other possible draft picks. As a unit the current Eagles receivers should improve, and are decent now. This is not a suggestion to replace McNabb, but the #1 need in the passing game is to lead the receivers so they can catch and run. Too many times they have to reach behind or fall down to make a catch. Put Westbrook, Donald Brown, Jackson, Avant, and Celek on the field at the same time in some situations, and you have a receiving corps that is going to give defenses problems. tacklinjoe
What this post forgot to mention was that Mayock raised the possibility of DHB going to the Raiders because he's the type of player Davis has reached for in the fast (blazing speed, questionable football skills). That does not mean he really believes DHB is a top 10 pick. djsaitta

6'2", 200+lbs, 4.3 40, 38.5" vertical, 2nd all-time receiving for UofMaryland --- yeah, the kid is gonna be a stud. Percy harvin is another desean jackson, same mold, we don't need another. We NEED a 6'2+ "big" receiver, a possession guy with good hands who can catch the tough balls (since thats what he's likely to get from Donovan. Robiskie and Britt would also be good fits for the birds... But lets get real, they're not drafting a WR with a high pick. :D KingOfPhilly
My bad!....I meant to type: Left OT (bad fingers....BAD!) TBear
With the holes we have to fill on offense, the thought of using ANY of the first four picks on a WR is ludicrous. If we can't address 1) Right OT, 2) GOOD running back to help/supplant BWest, and 3)Tight end that can actually BLOCK. After that, I'm not convinced the guy Andy signed as a fullback actually is one. He seems more of an all-around guy rather than the hole-opening, lead-blocking, linebacker snuffing REAL fullback this offense cries out for. If one is available in the draft, we should go for him in the third round. Any WR's added on or after draft day will be in the fourth round or later. TBear
Would love to see them get WR Ramses Barden from Cal Poly, 6'5", great hands, could get him in the 3rd round. tornadoh

I hate to say it but we have more pressing issues then WR! Luckily I have nothing to worry about cause the Eagles will take a DT and O-lineman with their fist two picks considering they dont trade them. Sheed
Harvin would be a terrible fit. We dont need another frail WR. If the Eagles can trade up and get Crabtree that would be the best scenario. Personally I think Moreno is the guy, interesting article on BIRDSDAILY.com about the draft scenarios craigsmith33
Harvin is too much like DeSean Jackson, Bey is a big athletic reciever the eagles need, trade up with Oakland and wait 'til the second round to take a tackle nickj
My name is my name! mjb
Yeah, we've got a Bunk. If only Mike McMahon were still in town, he could play the role of season 2's pathetic "White Mike." owumd
Bey is not ready for the NFL. He is a slow learner with ok hands. Just an ok WR needing a couple of years. Louisjco
i would be very disappointed if they moved up to get hime. that would be a waste of draft picks. i do like the kid from ohio st. as far as big receivers go this yr. brownrice
Percy harvin is the WR to draft...but don't worry the Eaagles are not going that way...OT, LB, Safety, RB, TE are much higher on their list nuggett
"...a Barksdale and a Wee Bey on the same team (and and Omar)." good ref to the best TV drama ever....McNaulty from the SEC...hahe.. Hey don't we have a Bunk' (Bunkley)? Warhound- JimG, Mayock could be right. He is talking about the Raiders. EL Zorro
nice "wire" reference out of owumd. I think Jimmy McNaulty plays OLB in the SEC, maybe we can pick him up too. dragoon6

Jackson, Curtis, and Avant/Baskett are already better than so many receiving corps around the league. People have been conditioned to believe it's our biggest need. We could absolutely stand an upgrade, but it's nowhere near as pressing as our needs at RB (number 1), or OT and TE. It's comparable to our need at CB and DE. owumd- knew it was only a matter of time until we heard from Philly10 with Percy Harvin. Enough already! potus
Philly 10, yelling won't get your pick. There are so many variables in the Eagles draft scenario that any mock draft is just a guess. Hatfield_ham- If this team moves up it will be in order to nab an OT, not a WR. I may get crucified for this, but I can live with the trio of Jackson, Curtis and Baskett. jpk
They aren't drafting a receiver in the first round. What's the point in even speculating? Andy prefers average over good or great. he needs to prove to the world, that no matter how much cap space he has, no matter who is available, in the draft, via trade or free agency, that he can win with any plug-in player @ the positions of WR, TE, Guard, Center, LB. Why he insists on limiting himself in these positions, with all the money, draft picks and trade value in the world is anyone's guess. gee1971

Comment removed.- For a change we have intelligent comments, instead of the venomous posts that I have been seeing here. I agree with JimG, there is no way he's a top ten pick. Mid teens at the earliest. I think RB Knowshown if he's there at 21 and or TE Pettigrew, but you never know with Andy, OL is always a possibility. Come on Draft Day !!!!! Philbert
They have their young, talented receiver already. The odds of drafting to WRs in consecutive drafts and having them both pan out are very slim. They need a proven veteran posession receiver now. springfieldzoo
No way this kid gets drafted in the top 10, Mike Mayock must be smoking something. JimG
It would be a nice pick, I think, but anyone expecting immediate results from Heyward-Bey is kidding themself. He's a raw athlete who still has a lot to learn about the position. If only Rashad Barksdale had panned out, we would have a Barksdale and a Wee Bey on the same team (and and Omar). owumd
