Once they acquired Pedro Martinez, the Phillies owed it to themselves to find out. Once that was established, they owed it to the team to adjust the starting rotation in the manner that best allowed the team to win -- which meant that Jamie Moyer was the odd man out. Most everybody seems to agree with that.

But it's funny. The expectations on Martinez seem so low that 3 earned runs in 5 innings is seen by most people as swell, even though 3 earned runs in 5 innings is just what Moyer was giving them, and just what saddled him with the worst ERA among qualified starting pitchers in the National League.

Pedro's ERA: 5.40.

Jamie's ERA: 5.47.

All of which means that Pedro has to be better or this makes no sense.

We should know in about 2 weeks, about two or three more starts. Because there were things to like about Martinez, particularly the fastball that had more life than expected. If he can sustain that, the Phillies might have something here -- and that is the biggest question. Martinez struggled a lot with his command on Wednesday night against the Cubs, but you have to think that has a decent chance of straightening itself out with more work.

The problem isn't the 3 earned runs -- it's the 5 innings. They need to get Martinez to a point where he can give them 6 innings consistently, 6 innings or more. The pattern in his brief Phillies career, in the minors and the majors, has been established. First time: four good innings, tired in the fifth and allows some runs. Next time: five good innings, tired in the sixth and allows some runs. Wednesday: four good innings, tired in the fifth and allows some runs.

The pattern needs to be broken, obviously. The good thing is that Martinez says he feels completely healthy -- and, again, that the fastball is starting in a good place. But if he cannot break the pattern, if he cannot get them through 6 innings in good order, there will need to be a decision made. Because it does need to be better than Wednesday night.

Well Rich, that's basically what I've said on a couple of other post today but with a lot less ink. Right now the move is a wash, Pedro has to improve, I saw some promiss towards that end last night, I just think that he should still be in the minors until he got to getting 6 decent innings pitched, you are right, 4 decent innings isn't going to cut it. If last night was a close game he wouldn't have finished the fith inning. Guess we'll find out, but know this, from what I saw Pedro will give us everything he's got trying to do it!!!

Pedro is 9 years Jamie's junior and has pitched far less this year. His arm will get stronger where I don't see Jamie mustering up anything more than he has shown so far this season. We need to give Pedro 4 more weeks of starts and then reanalyze.

I generally don't stick up much for the inksters but give Rich a break, he told it like it is, if you can't see that then you aren't very smart, just sayin'...

Two words for you, Rich...sample size. Best to come out with this after he's pitched more than one game of five innings.

Did you even wath the game last night? Pedro was on with his pitches....yes, he got in a bit of trouble after sitting on the bench for an extended period of time, but even if that wasn't the case, Pedro's pitching was nice to watch. He was on target with many of his strikes, painting the corners. At times he struggled to get the pitch above the knees, but that is not exactly a bad problem. Pedro can strike people out with strikes. Jamie's entire success is based off of people chasing balls, because when he starts pitching over the plate he gets crushed. Forget about the outcome, do you have no talent to judge skill?

really Rich? he struggled with his control, walking all of 1 player, in the 5th, when he was tired? it's only his 4th start, its still basically spring training for him. he showed a lot more than i thought he would for a first start. grasping at any negativity you can like usual...

Rich, I agree with that, but I believe that Pedro will get stronger as the season progresses, if he does not, then the Phils have some decisions to make come the postseason. How about the two headed monster approach. Let Jamie start and Pedro warm up at the start of the game and replace Jamie in the 6th with a fresh Pedro.. just kidding but a funny thought...

Jamerock, EXACTLY what I was thinking! There had to be someone negative. Pedro looked great for 4 innings, then tired. He is still getting in pitching shape. The guy hasn't pitched in almost 2 years! Most pitchers go through spring training and then take a few weeks of the regular season to get into shape. Give me a break Rich, you stink! He looked way better than Jamie ever has this year.

Rich is right, the chance sof Moyer op9itching any better than he was were very small. Pedro may not pitch any better but thereis a good chance he will pitch a lot better. Simple math. If Pedro doesn;t get any better, than maybe Myers takes his spot. If he really bombs, Moyer could get a second chance. This makes by far the most sense right now. Pedro's upside is still huge.

No he doesn't have to get better although I think he will. As is, he's an improvement over Moyer even if his ERA and innings pitched are the same. How? Simply by being a righty and balancing out the rotation.

He hasn't pitched in a year. He'll be fine. As long as Don Zimmer stays out of his face.

Rich, you just don't get it, as usual. First of all, why were you surprised that Pedro was throwing 92-93 when the Phils management and scouts have been saying that's where he was topping out in the minors? Plus, this guy hasn't really pitched since the middle of last season. He had some work in the World Baseball Classic in March but his arm is basically in Spring Training mode right now. Pitchers have to build up their arm strength as anyone who actually follows baseball knows. He'll be able to pitch deeper as he gets a few more games under his built. His stuff, however, was infinitely better than Moyer's and he was fooling hitters and getting them to swing and miss instead of relying on a generous strikezone to bail him out like Moyer...there's no comparison between their stuff. Martinez gives them a better chance to win...you should go back to being "idle".

By the way, in the 8 times Jamie has pitched 5 or fewer innings, only once has he given up fewer than 3 runs. In over half of his games pitched (12) he has given up 4 runs or more..ok? The guy stinks..He gets like an avg of 7 runs in support per game he pitches. Most of our pitchers, including pedro would be undefeated with that kind of run support.

Yep. First MLB start since September, guy should be perfect. The point of the derision, DJ, is that this is the guy's first start. It's a bit early for a negative spin. This is SOP for the Philadelphia media, which includes the idiots at WIP.
About Rich Hofmann
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest. Rich has blogged the postseasons of the Flyers and Eagles.
