Dungy: Vick's decision could be 'disastrous'

Tony Dungy played a critical role in getting Michael Vick back into the NFL after he served prison time.

Today he shared his thoughts on Vick's recent judgment and its possible consequences.

During an interview on The Dan Patrick Show, Dungy talked about Vick's decision-making.

"I have talked to Michael a few times, and again it becomes just an idea of decision-making and not putting yourself in harm's way," Dungy said. "He made some mistakes that he probably won't make again, hopefully. It was just not very good judgment and putting himself in a position where you're inviting the public to pay money and come to a birthday party, and you've got people there that you don't know who they are. You've got people that may be carrying weapons, people that are going to drink alcohol. And it's late at night. It's a recipe for failure."

Dungy said he first talked to Vick the day after the shooting incident. He said he has not heard if commissioner Roger Goodell plans to have a meeting with Vick or not.

"I think the bottom line is that he made some mistakes by being in the wrong place," Dungy said. "He left that place before anything really happened, but it could have been disastrous and may still be."

The Eagles have tried to make it clear that Vick was up-front with them and that none of the details that have surfaced since the incident have surprised them. Makes me wonder if Dungy was the one who told Vick he was best served to communicate with the team right away.

Dungy also talked about possible punishment from the league.

"Personally, I think that he didn't do a lot wrong legally," Dungy said. "Roger just has to look at their relationship and what his expectations were with Michael. If legally, you've got to stay aboveboard, then I think Michael did that. If you can't do anything that's going to put a bad face on the NFL, then I think Michael didn't do that."

* I'm going to take at Andy Reid in the next few days, but ESPN.com's Matt Mosley writes about him and whether his reputation is on the line in 2010:

If Reid can lead the Eagles deep into the playoffs with Kevin Kolb at quarterback, it will cement his status as one of the best coaches in the league. But this is an absolute high-wire act from the start. If the Eagles flame out and miss the playoffs, Reid would automatically be on the hot seat heading into 2011.

* Vinnie Iyer of The Sporting News identifies the Eagles as one of seven teams who did well to solve their offseason problems:

They put a pretty good defense on the field last season, but there were some notable lapses in allowing big plays to develop in the running game and on short-to-medium passes. The Eagles loaded up on defensive depth in the draft, injecting youth to help themselves on the outside. It will make a big difference to have a healthy Stewart Bradley back roaming the middle.

Vick violated his federal parole by having ex-cons and felons at his party. Also the shooter was probably an ex-con that was at Vick's party....this is a absolute violation of Vick's parole that can send Vick back to prison.... Jeffrey Lurie needs to restore honor and integrity to the Eagles and keep his word and fire Vick.

Dungy is right. Vick was stupid to put himself in this position. Stay away from situations that can ruin your life. The guy isnt very bright.

Hey cleanup, really sick and tired of your holier than thou act. Yeah, the man made a pretty bad mistake, but you know what, he paid for it, and it is time to move on. Regardless of his athletic talent, the man deserves the opportunity to make a living. As a society, we are too quick to condemn each other when it comes to our mistakes. We try to bury each other so far down into the ground that a person cannot breathe. I have read many of your other posts concerning everything from the way the city is run, to crime, politics, and other issues. Give it a rest, and try not to let any of your own skeletons out of the closet. And leave the detective work to the pros!

cleanupphilly---3:06 pm You are l00% right in Dungy & Reid, kids & employees. Reid is lucky enough to at lest have his sons still living. I always had good feelings toward Dungy until he brokered this Vick thing to Philly--why didn't he do all he could to get Vick to Indy--He knew deep down inside who he was mentering.

All we know so far is he had a party. Some known undesirables showed up and his security may or may not have turned them away or asked them to leave. We don;t even know if he violated his parole, or not. But spout off anyway.

Reid and Dungy...add them together and you still don't have a single decent dad. Both have serious baggage that prevents them from dealing with the truth about damage goods when it comes to young me.

CleanupPhilly, what are you doing praying that Vick has violated his parole or probation. Didn't you read or hear the statement made by the prosecutor, he has said Vick was not involved, he also said Vick has been very cooperative, and truthful, now you do you think supplies the information to the probation or parole officers?..............the daily news, well they don't they get their information from the officers that were involved in the case. So stop praying, Vick did not violate either his federal parole or his probation.

Why do some folks persist in saying that he violated his parole?? If he HAD, don't you think the Feds would have grabbed him up by now? I HATE having to stand up for this idiot, but you folks need to realize this guy only has so much gray matter to work with. Pleeeease Andy, find a decent #2 so you can get rid of this guy!
