Is it negativity, or simply reality?

During an interview with Andy Reid the other day, WIP's Angelo Cataldi asked, "Can you not understand the negativity is from 48 years without a championship and a decline from the Super Bowl year of 2004?"

"I'm not seeing the decline," Reid responded ... before deftly asserting that Cataldi was just trying to be negative. Reid's contention: Negativity sells and Cataldi is seeking to garner revenue for himself and the station. He then urged Cataldi to "change his tune" because of the new partnership that will return Eagles games to WIP, and chastised Cataldi for never attending practice.

Reid refuses to acknowledge the obvious despite the evidence to the contrary; that is, the Eagles, obviously, have declined. If Reid believes that there is no decline, perhaps Eagles fans should be concerned. After all, he controls personnel decisions at NovaCare Way. Reid only will concede, "We've come up short a couple of times here and we need to get back."

How "coming up short" is not a decline from a Super Bowl appearance is unclear. What is clear is that ignoring the decline comes across as another reason why Reid cannot seem to connect with a fan base that has such high hopes -- a fan base that, simply, wants to hear that he feels what they feel.

That Reid also says, "This is about wining football games," provides the only real measuring stick. The Eagles' record is the absolute truth.

Since the Super Bowl year, the Eagles are 24-24 (6-10, 10-6, 8-8). They have won one division title and earned the accompanying playoff berth, but also finished last in the division twice. That record ties them for 14th in the NFL over that 3-year span, well behind both the Cowboys and Giants, and with the same record as Washington.

Money talks
Two former Eagles are having contract issues with their new teams ... They seemed to have contract issues here, as we recall it.

Terrell Owens is going into the final year of a 3-year, $25 million contract and says he wants to remain in Dallas. "There was a situation where the contract didn't work out in Philly," he tells the Dallas Morning News. Gee, you think? He says he is not going to let that happen again.

In Tampa Bay, Jeff Garcia is going into the second year of a 2-year deal and says he is frustrated by the slow progress toward an extension. "It's at a snail's pace it seems right now," he tells the Pewter Report.

Elsewhere
* ESPN has posted its offseason NFL rankings and the Eagles are No. 13. The comment reads: "Last season, they hit their stride when it was too late. With a fully healed Donovan McNabb and an improved secondary, the Eagles could be dangerous."

* Betting Web site Docsports.com had the Eagles at 45-1 to win the Super Bowl, the 19th choice on the board. "Philly was another injured underachiever last year and could bounce back." New England is the top choice at 5-2 followed by Dallas at 6-1. In case you are wondering, you can get 20-1 in Vegas on the Phillies winning the World Series.

* Former Cal and current Eagles receiver/returner DeSean Jackson will grace the cover of NCAA Football 09 for PlayStation 2, EA Sports announced recently. The game is available July 15.

Go Cowboys!!! Eagles will be better this year, say 9-7, the last year of McPuke!! Is Kolb ready yet? He better be next year, or its cellar dwellers for years to come. At least Asante is getting paid now for what he did in NE(Spy-Patriots).. The Eagles needed a Wide receiver, but they get another corner, why? And over paid for him, good job Mr. Gold Standard!

I agree with Reid. You have to rebuild. There will be a certain amount of deline when that happens. This year is important, because we will see if the Eagles have actually declined, or have rebuilt. As far as Angelo Cataldi, he is becoming annoying. Although he did predict the Flyers to go down in four, gotta give him credit there. WIP has turned into a sports/sex radio channel. Even Howard Eskin was asking a women the other night if she was dressed or not. That means WIP has officially become a adult station, which is ashame for the Philadelphia kids who love their sports. When you consider Caltaldi's 'Enquirer' approach to reporting, and all the sexual inuendo, WIP is what is on the decline. Where is their management? When are they going to rebuild?

Eagles didn't decline, other teams got better! The Eagles still went 8-8 with the circus atmosphere the eagles had last year!

I agree with Andy. Who wrote this article Angelo Cataldi? The guy is not the voice of the Philly Sports fan no more tha the Cowboys are America's team. Both are self proclaimed and have no justification. I did not notice any reference to injuries that have also hurt the Eagles team. I guess injuries have no effect on a teams record. Just ask the Flyers how big injuries can effect performance. Josh you are a maroon like Cataldi.

Andy Reid is right. Cataldi is an idiot that says things for the shock value rather than becuase they are factual. Need I remind everyone that this is the same idiot that chartered a bus with 30 of the biggest idiots in the city to boo Donovan McNabb when he was drafted. That showed a total lack of class on behalf of WIP and Cataldi. I think you will see Cataldi's outrageous remarks increase in the coming months. He has a very formidable opponent on 950 in the mornings and he knows it. I for one only listen to Mike and Mike. Hopefully Cataldi loses the ratings battle and resigns in disgrace. Have the Eagles had a tough few season? Of course. Has injury played a major roll in those bad seasons. Yes. The Eagles will compete for the division and will advance in the playoffs this year.

Both Andy and Cataldi are right. Eagles have declined since 2004 (bad picks, average def line, Kevin Curtis as biggest free agent). And the media is a bunch of headline whores. Eagles have done little to improve immediate problems. Offense upgraded QB & TE (healthy beats injured), Defense upgraded the nickle back (highest paid nickle in NFL history), special teams added a rookie with moves and speed. And that's it, folks. Hopefully add a little more luck, but its the same team.

Cosmic hit it on the head... other teams in the division got better... but does that mean Andy Reid can only succeed when others are down.. or can he beat very good teams... look at his overall record against the AFC.. it is ugly.

Andy is correct, and good for him for calling out Angelo on this. Listen to WIP on any regular basis, and it becomes obvious that people call in much, much more when the host is being negative and flinging mud about than when he's being reasonable and realistic (which is probably why Jody Mac is on 950, he just wouldn't play along). Negativity sells in this city. If Cataldi never attends practice, he's pretty much got no more credibility than any other fan. I'd put SalPal in the same boat, since he's so busy working in other cities for ESPN that he's not around the team much, but still presents himself as an 'Eagles insider.'

Talk about Stepford fans...you really don't think this team is in a decline? "I'm not seeing the decline," Reid responded.....he is delusional if he thinks this team can compete. Another 8-8 coming up. Forget Cataldi, he will say whatever gets ratings, but I'm pretty sure he is not sweating a 10 watt station that most of the area can't even get reception on.

Not surprising to hear Cataldi and Company dumping on the Birds. Heck, they dump on everyone. It is hard to believe that WIP is the best Philly can come up with for a sports talk show. Any other city you'd been off the air long ago but Phily loves the negative and to bash their teams!
