Daily News sports writers Bob Cooney and John Smallwood have targeted seven players who the 76ers could select in the first round of the NBA draft on Thursday. Here are their evaluations of each player and a Draft Meter rating from 1 to 10 on the chances that he will be selected (1 is least likely; 10 is most likely).

Royce White...the meter breaks!...10...10...10...Terrence Ross if they keep #15, If they somehow procure #7 for Golden State, it's Myers Leonard...Moe Harkless could be the guy at #15 if Ross is gone, but at least 3 teams in the lottery (Sacramento,Portland,Golden State) would like to trade back a little to get him.

Bear... I like Royce White a LOT. But the whole "can't fly on planes" thing is a big problem in the NBA. With that said, they could take that chance on him. He really is a top ten talent. I'm all for drafting Terrance Ross. This is what the Sixers need. I really hope they dont draft Leonard either. We already drafted a 7 foor project last season. Let's just build him. Vucevic is a skilled center.

The Sixers have the worst front offices ever in thee nba bear. They will draft a point guard.

considering that their under new ownership and are getting a new gm, I am not really sure how you can make the judgment.

Nice work, this shows that drafting is not an exact science. The only player they agree on is Ross, with Cooney giving him an 8 and Smalls giving him a 7. Also we pump these 20 yr olds up like they're the next big thing, notice Professor Cooney gave out 3's to Leonard, Rivers & Zeller and a 4 to Moultrie. IMO the 2 most ready to contribute in the NBA are Ross and Harkless. Harkless may be the best player on the board when we pick but he's another Iggy/ET type. Can we can't keep drafting those guys?

Free26Bucknell... "They", or whichever Sixers GM regime you are referring to, haven't really drafted poorly at all considering where they end up in the draft each season. And this season they are focused on shooting and size. Clearly you don't follow this team. I will say this though.... "They" have made some bad signings throughout the past decade.

Can we please take Perry Jones III? I don't care about motor or questionable character. All these players are just another non-impact role guy. At least Jones III has upside. If he doesn't pan out we basically will have missed out on another Speights or Vucevic. Not an organizational killer. Take the guy who might actually be an above average NBA player and worry about the other stuff later.

Bob, you're nuts. Is the plan to eventually get the entire team under 6'10"?

mtairy:BC's on Terrence Ross...also, I think he feels the Sixers wouldn't go Leonard (which would entail a move) or Zeller because he feels strongly the "big" is going to be a veteran, especially in lieu of Vucevic and LaVoy still being babes in the woods...Interesting that Moultrie is a wide variance...the talent is there, the "DC mentality" may not be..I'll go with the beat writer over the coliumnist on that one, as he knows DC better,IMO.

@Charlie Cheswick, I'm a Ross guy because I think he can develop into a good NBA player and can shoot but you make a good point. These guys will most likely have long NBA careers but Perry Jones is one of the few (Davis, Drummond, Waiters) that could potentially be a star. Unfortunately I think some of the bad teams picking ahead of us are going to come to the same conclusion you did.

well yeah it will depend on his availability obviously. some mocks have him slipping to us other's don't. i just think if he does slip we'd be crazy not to risk it.

mtairy"one other thing...The Sixers did interview Drummond at the Combine...And they're obviously interested in Leonard...Both very young, both really athletic, talented, and considered raw...If the Sixers DO go veteran approach, whether it be a Gasol/Jefferson type contract, or a another year of Hawes type serviceable, it's not going to be that athletic big at the 5...I thing BC may have underscored Leonard a touch,IMO...Unless they feel Moultrie continues to fill out with his growth, can pick up center minutes as a contributor.

Would love to get Drummond but I think a couple other teams are jockeying to get him.

Doug may be the league's premier promoter of the small ball trend. If the team adds a pure 2 with range to the jrue, turner, iggy rotation, they will be that much stronger in controlling games from the perimeter. The front court is a mess, but you got Thad, Allen and Elton and hopefully Vuc out of the doghouse. Two more picks 2nd round picks to try to get lucky, or amnesty Brand and pick up Humphrey, etc.

Bear: did you see Cooney's brief bio on Leonard last night; brutal!! He would be wise to attend the workout today. I prefer a shooter from the draft, even if they re-sign Williams, one or two veteran bigs from trade and free agency, especially IF Hawes is not re-signed.
As for Perry Jones, III, does DC have the patience for another guy who needs an attitude adjustment? Somehow, I doubt it. If they do take a big, look for Nicholson at 15. If they fall in love with Leonard, they would need to trade up which appears unlikely.
I don't believe they will amnesty Brand, nor do I believe they will go after Humphries. As I said last night, they can add Kanye West to the ownership group and Kim Kardashian would then attend the games sans Humphries.
