The term sports hernia has not been good to the Eagles in the past and now another of their top offensive players must deal with this debilitating injury.

Kevin Curtis will undergo surgery for a sports hernia tomorrow and coach Andy Reid said his leading receiver from a year ago "will be out for a while."

Reid said Curtis suffered the injury during the Eagles' preseason game against the Carolina Panthers and tried to practice with it earlier in the week, but the pain became unbearable and he did not participate in today's practice.

Veterans Greg Lewis and Hank Baskett will split time in place of Curtis at the left wide receiver spot while rookie DeSean Jackson will start on the right side in place of Reggie Brown when the Eagles face the AFC champion New England Patriots Friday night at Gillette Stadium. Brown is sidelined by a strained right hamstring he suffered against the Panthers.

Reid said he doesn't anticipate bringing in another receiver right now and that he expects Brown to be ready in time for the Eagles' Sept. 7 season opener against the St. Louis Rams. The coach said he doesn't know how extensive Curtis' surgery will be.

"On those things, they have to go in and see," Reid said. "That's why I don't know what the time table is going to be. We're trying to get on it early."

Curtis led the Eagles with 77 receptions for 1,110 yards last season and Brown was second on the team with 61 catches for 780 yards, so it's obvious the receiving situation is a concern with the regular season approaching.

"We'll be fine there," the coach said matter of factly. "It won't be a threat to what we do. Other guys will have to step up for the time (Curtis) is out."

The Eagles' recent history of problems with the sports hernia injury is well documented. Quarterback Donovan McNabb tried to play through the 2005 season with the injury, but in the Eagles' ninth game he suffered a complete tear of the abdominal region and needed surgery. The Eagles finished 6-10 and at the bottom of the NFC East that season.

A year ago, tight end L.J. Smith had surgery in the spring to repair a sports hernia injury and he had the least productive season of his career with just 22 catches for 236 yards and one touchdown. The Eagles again finished last with an 8-8 record.

Maybe we should make the picture smaller so people could read the 1st half of the article.

Hmmmm is Boldin available? No. Do Eagles fans understand that.... No. Why?

They pretty much have to make a move. If Arizona is shopping Boldin (which you have to think they are with him being so upset), he is our best option. If anything, adding him takes pressure off guys like Avant, DJ from having to overcompensate for Curtis' absence. There's really no excuse to add another WR right now especially if Reggie doesn't get healthy

Ya, The Cards arent gonna move him. Joe Horn seems like a possability, but it is looking ugly. Lets hope Deshaun Jackson can do what pretty much no eagles rookie has done under Andy Reid...get on the field. Just reading that line of Basket and Lewis in the starting positions made me cringe.

"We'll be fine there," the coach said matter of factly. "It won't be a threat to what we do." I believe Andy Reid completely as he is always very open and forthright with information. Hmmm... I seem to have misplaced the Kool-Aid...

Great. Based on Akers, LJ and McNabb's experience, color him gone for the year. Have the surgery immediately and get it over with.

Easy people, I hope you realize these front offices don't run their teams through the media. If there is something in the works, we won't know about it and both sides will continue to say "we won't trade him" or "we don't need anyone"...patience is key (although I am also getting ansty and beggging Eagles to TRY to get Boldin, since they have more than enough trade bait).

I agree, they have to make a move now.

I have a feeling the FO is going to be stingy and not make a move at all which leads me to beleive that our end result is 8-8...no good. Lets face it guys, we all want Boldin in an Eagles uniform but they havent gone out and grab a wide reciever before and i dont expect them to change. Now Joe Horn is a good possibility but he is 36 years OLD he isnt going to get us the production we need to make a playoff push. I love the Eagles as much as the next guy but i have a bad feeling about this season especially when you think about the past sports hurnia surguries that have plagued this team.

Heck with Anquan Boldin! Does anyone know if Usain Bolt can catch a football? 6' 5"-he would look great in Eagle green

We tried trading for Boldin. The Cardinals do not want to trade Boldin. They've made this clear repeatedly. I'm sure the Eagles will make another inquiry since Boldin's most recent comments indicate he's still ticked at the Cardinals. Unless we can trade for a Boldin or Chad Johnson or someone of that caliber, and that seems unlikely, I don't see much help on the way here. By the way, what do you expect Reid to say? "Oh no, we're screwed! We lost Curtis, we might as well give up this season!" Come on. Of course the guy isn't going to panic and wet his pants to the media. This injury sucks though for Curtis. As mentioned by others, the sports hernia has a history of being one of those injuries that continues to affect player performance for awhile even after the player comes back. I'm guessing they won't start Jackson for the first game or two just to avoid putting too much pressure on him but he might find himself in the starting line-up pretty quickly this year. We really need Brown to get healthy now.

They will make a move and all the idiotic Philly fans will be like: "huh?" while the rest of us will calmly sip the Kool-aid (just kidding!!!) Seriously though the Front Office knows they will have to make a move but sorry guys Boldin is not it. Lito to AZ is not a deal that the Cards or Eagles would make, and they already tried that for Fitz... You're looking at situation where at best they'll get a cast off from the final cuts who can fill the #4 spot with Brown at the one, Glew at the 2 (yeah I dislike it as much as the rest of you do, Glew has been riding the coatails of his SB performance for the last 4 years)and DJ at the slot (Think Wes Welker with more speed)and it will work out. WHy? Because this is the '02 Blueprint in effect Solid WR's (Actually the talent is better this year than 02) loaded backfield (why is no one talking about how good Buck looks this year? Scared??) and a D that would punch your momma in the throat to make a tackle. Yes the division is tougher now than it was then but who really scares you this year in the AFC???

Reid will have to find another receiver because otherwise a rookie will have to *GASP* start and possibly be productive in his system. He’d lose all credibility and, truly, I think it would do his head in.

Trade a 1st, LJ and another one of our scrub receivers for AB!

Fellow Iggles Fans, let's keep it simple: Eagles need to just sack up and reach out to AZ for Boldin with Sheppard and whatever else is needed for stability in this offense. The offense "can" be great, all of you can see that I'm sure (and hope). Make the moves now for an offensive push to a great team with McNabb and Westbrook. I trust Johnson and his defensive schemes to help along the way for sure!

The Boston Strangler
Joe Horn is cooked. He's done. If he had anything left in the tank the pathetic Falcons would have kept him or someone would have picked him up. I'd be shocked if they got Boldin considering they're on the hook for a lot of money between Curtis and Brown, but would still ove to see it. The guy's a beast.

The Eagels have two first rounders next year. They don't need to give up Lito. I would bet they could get Boldin for a second round pick and if Lito has a solid season, they could move him for a second rounder next year and be none the worse. At least this way they could have the services of both for this year.

i would not trade for Boldin or sign Horn. I dont want either of those guys in the huddle. I beleive we have plenty of depth at receiver. Sorry for it to be at Curtis' expense, but Avant Basket and G-Lew will spep in and UP!! The beauty is there is not a lot of scouting report that will help against them. Itsa a good opportunity for any of the guys on the practice squad too!! Guys that come to train with us every year and end up on the practice squad. This is even more intruiging now!! Can hardly wait!!

Boldin will only be a possibility if the Cardinals want it. It's not up to Banner, Reid or anyone on this side of the country. Joe Horn, on the other hand, should have had a ticket purchased by the Eagles on Delta Airlines from Atlanta yesterday. This is ridiculous. Hank Baskett, although very tall, is NOT the answer. Reggie Brown is not the answer for god's sake. Come on Andy.

First it was Thrash and Pinkston, and now its Lewis and Avant. The Eagles refuse to go out and get McNabb weapons and expect him to go to battle with guys that have no business being on a pro roster. I mean to think we replaced Owens with Curtis in the first place is a joke. Anyone dreaming of seeing Boldin better wake up because why would the Cards deal him? because hes not happy?! I still see Shepperd playing for the Birds even though hes not happy.

If all else fails, give Lito some reps at wideout.

They're not going to go after Boldin. All this means is that Westbrook gets 85 percent of the touches instead of just 80%.

It just seems as if the Birds are snake bitten. Andy is just not telling us the truth about, it being fine et al. Curtis could run routes and actually catch the ball. DeJean now has to play whether he gets blasted on every play or not. And if the Cards say Boldin is not going to be traded, that sounds like other teams with moaners who just keep on that team. Though Favre did show that a deal can be made when things look the darkest for all parties concerned.

how about this for a plan....we RUN THE FOOTBALL!!!! Does reid forget how he got to his first 3 NFC championship games and what made mcnabb successful in early years....duce n buckhalter. Now theres westbrook, buck, hunt, etc. I m worried not because curtis went down but rather because reid will insist on throwing 50+ rather than maintaining ball control on the ground, and he used to be a lineman himself, WHAT R U THINKING ANDY???....god bless us the fans

Would love to see the Birds acquire Boldin, but they won't because Lito won't be enoughto trade, and the Eagles don't trade their draft picks! Plus, Boldin wants to leave Arizona because he wants a new deal for more money. Do you honestly believe the birds will trade for him and give him a new deal right away? They rarely renegotiate with their own players. I'm sure the phone calls to James Thrash and Antonio Freeman have been made! That's about the best you can expect.

Has anyone else heard of any other professional football team that suffers as many sports hernia-related injuries as the Philadelphia Eagles have over the past few years? Hell, has anyone heard of even one other sports hernia-related injury in pro fotball over the past few years besides teh ones that have sidelined McNabb, Smith, and now Curtis?

To Joe G (and all those who think Boldin isn't available) - what sports GMs say, isn't what they mean. how naive are you? do you follow sports? remember the whole randy moss situation? eagles weren't interested in him, then it leaked they offered him a deal? the reason the eagles never make legitimate trades is reid is so obsessed with obtaining "value" in the draft, that he doesnt want to give up his pics

The 45-year-old Brookover lives in Delran with his wife Francine and roots for Notre Dame and Michigan State, the two schools attended by his children, Justine and Ryan. When Notre Dame plays Michigan State, he cheers for the school of the child he likes more at that particular moment.

Before that he worked in the mailroom (not quite). Informed that his father is no longer covering the Lions, McLane's eldest, three-year-old son said, "You mean Simba, Scar and Mufasa, Daddy?" His two-year-old son -- excited about the move to the Eagles -- said, "Go, Deigo, Go!" or something like that. His wife of five-plus years, however, had a different take on the new job. "Another five years is in question," she said. Check out McLane on Twitter and Facebook for instant updates on the Eagles.
