Bradley, McCoy free, but -- Brian Billick?

POSTED: Sunday, January 13, 2013, 5:12 PM

Is Brian Billick a good option for the Eagles?
Yes.
No.
Only if he brings an in-his-prime Ray Lewis with him.

Two NFL assiistants the Eagles have interviewed, Seattle defensive coordinator Gus Bradley and Denver offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, are free to take NFL jobs, with their teams losing this weekend.

But the Eagles' trudge toward a new coach took a bizarre twist Sunday with the report from CSNPhilly.com's Reuben Frank that the team last week interviewed former Ravens coach Brian Billick. Billick was working as the analyst Sunday on FOX's broadcast of the Seattle-Atlanta game, and Eagles fans were among many across the country chuckling at his misstatements and bizarre opinions -- until they heard he might be their next coach.

At one point, Billick went on an extended riff about how Seattle might not go for it on fourth down near the Falcons'' goalline, because a field goal would make it a two-score game. But the Seahawks had just picked up a first down, and they trailed by 20 points.

The Eagles interviewed McCoy last Sunday, the day before Frank says they interviewed Billick. They interviewed Bradley Saturday.

As tends to happen when your team loses a playoff game, neither McCoy nor Bradley covered himself in glory this weekend, but the problems of the Seattle defense seemed to have more to do with physical mismatches than with scheme or gameplan. McCoy must bear some of the brunt of an extremely conservative approach to the end of the game by Denver, which helped Baltimore come back to tie and then win in the second overtime.

Billick led the Ravens to the Super Bowl title following the 2000 season. No Super Bowl-winning coach has ever gone to another team and won again.

Billick is a joke, he does not even know what the score of the game he is watching is...Eagles don't need another clueless moron who also loves the loser Vick..oh wait, maybe fantasy football geek Jeffrey Lurie who gave Vick $100 million wants Billick as offense coordinator to coach the awful Vick....pathetic.

Please stop saying they gave Vick 100 million. He never will see that money. And there is so much that ones on behind the scenes....you have no clue who they like or don't like. No clue who they have or haven't spoken with at all....

More like CHEAPNESS. Persistently 40 million under the cap, Lurie pocket money. No loyalty to the star players etc etc. No one wants what the Eagles are selling it just won't get told by the tight knit group that protects this organization. Wake up people. It ain't about winning here and never has been. Follow the Benjamins baby.

I sure would rush to be a coach for this brilliant fan base, why wouldn't Brian Billick, whose IQ is over 140, think that he could out-smart Eagle fans?!

Dear 'Expert' Couch Potatoes... Brian Billick won a Super Bowl. We would be lucky to get him. Or, Jon Gruden. Let's get a proven winner here and let other teams try coordinators out.

Was a favor, Andy asked Jeff to interview Brian to get Brian's name out there as a potential viable HC candidate...not a serious candidate for Eagles.

lol, jlm you literally have no idea what you are talking about on this, as in ZERO. Billick is NOTHING like Andy Reid. The fact that they coached together somewhere doesnt make them similiar, in any way. Alot of NFL coaches are friends with each other from being on previous staffs, it doesnt make them have similiar philosophies, at all, just that he wont critisize an old friend on national television. Billick has also repeatedly explained the flaws in Andy's all pass-system, while trying to not to directly critisize Andy, who he probably feels sorry for. Billick is an offensive guy that KNOWS HOW TO RUN THE FOOTBALL And FUNDAMETNALLY BELIEVES IN IT. HE didnt pull an Andy REid with a great D and call like 70% passing and lose lol...some of the statements I see on here about coaches are laughably stupid. Billick POUNDED the run REPEATEDLY probably around 48/52 run pass, and WON A SUPERBOWL. that is NOTHING like Reid is in fact THE EXACT OPPOSITE. Billick also won a superbowl and is a PROVEN motivator. The guy is a GREAT coach and would be a GREAT choice if thats who they go with. He definetely has a chance to win a superbowl and will get this team to run the ball and play defense, and be FUNDAMETNALLY SOUND.

Go to the box scores of he last 5 Super Bowls. It's about who can pass and defend the pass...not who "pounds the run".

    @cdedrick- don't ever question CG25, she's the queen of Philly.com.

@cg25- billick always ran the ball because he had one of the best defenses in nfl history and Trent differ as QB. What did you call other posters on here? Oh yea, it was "laughably stupid", I find your posts stupidly laughable.

You're such an idiot, I'll learn the game, then you can learn the game, then what happens? Nothing. You're a know it all and so am I, so what's the difference? At least I can admit that I am, and always will be, "just a fan". Where as you think that you're the love child of John madden and ray didinger. Guess what, your opinion counts just as much as the rest of ours, which is to say, it really doesn't.

uh, no. If it was all about who could pass the ball Andy Reid would have had 13 superbowls by now, because his pass offense was always one of the tops in the leauge...and he got...ZERO SUPERBOWLS. Its about alot more then just passing and stopping the pass, as in RUNNING IT AT LEAST 45% of the time or and STOPPING THE RUN. You need to at least be balanced around 56/44 or better to win a superbowl. 58/42 won once, 57/43 won once, and every other team ever was within 56/44 or better. I dont know if you missed the Ravens POUNDING THE RUN most of the day while Peyton threw it like 43 times including 2 pics and a fumble...and they lost. The Ravens also needed a big passing play with a 1st round QB to tie it since it was a hostile environment on the road. They did BOTH to win, not just passing. They only passed it literally 4 times the entire 2nd half until then. If they didnt run it like 40 times before that they would have been blown out of the game completely in that hostile environment. it would have been like 52-7. And the Niners also pounded the run close to 40 TIMES while the pass happy Packers had Rogers throw it 40-50 times with 16 called rushes. Are you kidding. Please learn the game cdedrick05. Its much more then just "passing". Alot more. That wins nothing without being able to run the ball and stop the run. You gotta do both.

Garner hit the nail on the head. You couch morons have no idea what you are talking about. People who actually research the NFL and coaches know Billick is NOTHING like Reid and would be the best hire the Eagles could make. I love Billick and hope the Eagles pick him. Guys a proven winner who can motivate and maximize talent

Where pray tell did you come up with that piece of misinformation. Oh, you know them both and they each told you, NO, or maybe it's because you trusted what the last bumpkin wrote and you're trying to show you know more than he does. Maybe you could give us a clue what it is that they have in common? Same offensive strategy? Can't be one likes to bang the ball up the middle and pass on third and long the other likes a west coast short passing game. Help us out and give us a clue

Billick didn't care about the score of the Seattle Falcons because he, like most, thought the game was over, and he was already making phone calls to hire assistants for the new Eagles' job. I am sure if he is thinking about coaching again, the last thing on his mind was the playoff game with a 20 point spread. Whenever he evaluates the Eagles, he always talks about how they should run more, fix the defense, etc. He is the anti-Andy Reid, and the Eagles are lucky they even got an interview.

If Bradley is the guy then he'll definitely bring a QB that mirrors Russell Wilson. Maybe he brings Flynn with him and we draft Geno Smith that would make Nick Foles expendable, hopefully.

All Billick has done in this league is be the OC for the highest scoring offense in NFL history at the time and lead a team with Trent Dilfer to a Super Bowl victory. But some hacker sports writer thinks that his career can be mocked. Yeah, okay.

UncleStosh I am glad you are not the only one besides me trying to point this out. The guy literally had the highest scoring offense in NFL history, won a SB with Trent Dilfer, and is one of the most forward looking people in the NFL with a nose for using technology to maxime time, efficiency, and productivity. I watched a news piece once about Billick and how he had this network video system installed for the Ravens where the software could take any formation entered and come up with every single legal play you could run from that formation, and it also matched it up against all possible defensive formations. The guy is a genius when it comes to football, he's a proven leader, and just like every coach his time ran out and he needed a change in direction. I think he would be a great fit here.

I watched and listened to him throughout his entire time in Baltimore (have lived in DC/MD area for the past 20 years, and Ravens, unfortunately, are the team around here). If you didn't like Andy Reid, you'll hate Billick...he's a pompous, arrogant guy who thinks he knows more than everyone; though he was hired as an offensive genius, he benefited from an amazing defense thanks to the drafting of an all-timer at GM in Ozzie Newsome. People here, press included, couldn't wait for him to go...he was fired...since he wore out his welcome pretty quickly even though he won a Super Bowl. He would be a disaster!

And anyone ask why I'm down on Foles, did you see the guy we should have picked and let get away to Seattle. Wilson is a true 1st round pick if not for his height and he showed it, great leader, ice water in his veins, very smart and versatile. On the other hand we took (AR pick in the line of Kolb, Kafka) Nick Foles a true late 3rd rounder has good stature, weak arm and dancing feet, really that's it. I'm not sold on this kid and if the Eagles are smart they shouldn't be either.

You are so right. I watched Wilson for 3 years at NC State and the kid has tons of moxy. Please remember accordingly to Lurie - the 2012 Draft was lead by Lure's Administrative Assistant Howie Roseman. Of course Reid is not off the hook either, in the 2009 Draft look who was on the board when they picked #18. Clay Matthews and Haakem Nicks.

Low blow on Billick's fourth down riff. It wasn't extended, and he immeiately corrected himself. Bradley's defense coldn't hold a lead with 30 seconds left. Everyone knew they would run a couple of quick outs to get into field goal range. Keep drinking the cool aid philly.

Today Billick suggested that Seattle 'may consider' kicking the FG and going for the onside kick while down 6 with :44 seconds left, deep in Atlanta territory, if they faced a 4th and 5. (It was 3rd and 5 when he said it.)

No coach worth anything in the history of the NFL would be kicking the FG and trying for an onside kick in that spot.

    That probably says it all.

I kind of feel bad for Billick after watching the game today, I think we might be seeing the onset of Alzheimer's disease, he had some really weird comments, plus I'm not sure what game he was commentating on, was he watching a game in his head from 5 years ago? Kind of sad really.

The sleeper choice is SCOTT MILANOVICH coach of the Toronto Argonauts. With Milanovich as the Offensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach, the Alouettes’ offence flourished. His team scored more than 600 points in successive seasons and quarterback Anthony Calvillo took home two CFL Most Outstanding Player awards. During his tenure, the Als appeared in three straight Grey Cup games, winning in 2009 and 2010, and developed an array of offensive players including league all-stars RB Brandon Whitaker and WR Jamel Richardson.

This is the "think outside the box" ticket for the Birds.

I think there are going to be doubts about Billick based on his calls in the Seattle- Atlantaa game. Billick did the most confused presentation of color commentaryI've ever heard. I don't think he will be retained as a commentator and that doesn't bode well for his alertness or readiness to resume NFL coaching. Definitely don't want Billick.

I am as patient as they come. I hope that the Eagles brain trust triumverate is not suffering from the paralysis of analysis. Waiting so long tochoose a coach who tells them what they want to hear. All along never hearing what they want to hear and then must settle on a retread.
Gus Bradlel, if interested in being the head coach of the Eagles should be contacted and hired early this week. If the Eagles do not have a coach before this week ends then I fear the worst. They have no idea as to whom they want and can't come to a clear, football intelligent decision on a coach!!!
