Boras talks Werth

POSTED: Monday, September 20, 2010, 3:49 PM

Read my earlier post on Werth-Boras here.

After Jayson Werth canvassed the agent community over the past month, he settled upon Scott Boras, one of the game's most powerful figures. Boras could land Werth a huge deal this off-season when he becomes a free agent, but the superagent thinks a common bond helped forge the two parties.

"I think we got along because we were both raised by farmers," Boras said by phone. "His stepfather and my father were both farmers. You go to work, get your job done, you do your thing and you keep your mouth shut."

Werth hired Boras late Sunday night. He called the agent to inform him of his decision hours after hitting a walk-off home run to beat the Washington Nationals.

"It was a real good day," Boras said.

Boras expects his client to command a significant deal on the market. The first positive about Werth's 2010 season that Boras mentioned was the fact he could play centerfield. Werth has started 18 games in center this season.

So will talks with the Phillies, who appear to be a significant long shot to re-sign Werth, begin before the season is over?

"Certainly," Boras said. "The Phillies are a very viable alternative."

Alternative?

"Whenever a player is playing well at a place, you have to look at those places closely because they're a good combination," Boras said. "It's good business for the Phillies. They've been running their business rather well. They're putting together a core, a dynasty."

Boras has had limited dealings with the Phillies since the J.D. Drew saga in 1997. He also represents current Phillies Ryan Madson and Domonic Brown -- coincidentally, the player who could replace Werth in the Phillies' lineup.

The agent said he has kept in contact with Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr.

"In the era of Ruben, we talk about a lot of free agents," Boras said. "We interact quite a bit. Ruben and I have a very good working relationship over the years."

Werth is gone. Werth made that official by saddling up with Boras. Boras doesn't make his money by helping players stay with their original teams. Because Boras also represents Domonic Brown it is in Boras' self interest to get Werth to sign elsewhere to open up a starting spot for Domonic Brown with the Phillies.

Hopefully this will also mean that Werth will get very hot during the postseason. He has done this in the past, so let's see if the lure of a promised "pot of gold" in free agency will motivate Werth to turn it up a couple of notches during the postseason.

It's true that the fact that Werth can play center--at 6'5" 225, shows the kind of athlete he is. Love to see him stay... Maybe Howard and Utley would take cuts...

"His stepfather and my farmer were both farmers." His farmer was a farmer?

Werth's ticket out of town was punched when they traded for Oswalt. The Phils already have something like 146 million tied up in 16 players next year. Unless they can trade someone like Lidge, Ibanez, Rollins, or Victorino, there's no way they can give Werth 15 million a year and fill out the rest of the roster.

I remember when I thought Madson was gone after 07. Boras said "he sees Madson as a young Mariano Rivera waiting in the wings". Of course Madson wanted to stay in Philly. You never know, all Boras is going to do is play one team against another to max out the cash and let his client choose.

@wylies - those are two very good observations - this completely seals the deal. lets hope that raul can be a productive player next year. if he can be, i dont think our lineup takes that big of a hit. shane, polanco, utley, howard, rollins, raul, brown, ruiz, pitcher. i kind of like rollins in the middle of the lineup and can help to break up the lefties.

Agree - perhaps Weerth will make a hugh push to end the season as well as post-season. Just what the Phils will need in the 5th or 6th hole...

Should have never signed Shane Victorino to any type of extension. Would have been much better to let him walk and keep Werth and Brown. But I guess the past is in the past.

This officially ends an hope Werth will re sign here. Funny how Boras points to the farmer mindset about working hard and keeping your mouth shut, when he seems to have difficulty with the latter. I guess Boras (and Werth and Brown) don't mind the apparent conflict Boras has in representing both of them, but it does smack of a typical scumbag move we'd expect from Boras. Oh well, some team will likely overpay for Werth and regret it in a year or two.
