Weaver wants McNabb to return

POSTED: Sunday, March 28, 2010, 11:00 AM

Eagles fullback Leonard Weaver has become among the first players to publicly weigh in on the McNabb trade situation.

Weaver was interviewed by Ross Tucker on Sirius Radio this afternoon. Tucker sent out a few tweets with Weaver's comments.

"I'm surprised," Weaver said. "Let the man go ahead and play the last year of his contract out ...

"Not a knock on Kolb, but I would love for Donovan to come back for another year so we can try to win it all."

From earlier:

It is hard to know what to believe these days with the Donovan McNabb trade rumors, but here is an interesting sidelight that does not exactly involve McNabb, but does involve one of the teams reported to be in hot pursuit.

Michael Lombardi reports in his Sunday column for the National Football Post that the Oakland Raiders are discussing the availability of quarterback Sage Rosenfels with the Minnesota Vikings. Lombardi writes that the Vikings would only trade Rosenfels if they knew for sure that Brett Favre is returning.

Of course, the Vikings have not really given Favre a timetable and say they have no idea what he will do. Most league observers think he will return.

Rosenfels was acquired from Houston before last season and had a chance to compete with Tavaris Jackson for the starting job until Favre came to Minnesota. Rosenfels was the third quarterback the entire season.

By the way, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that there have been no indications of talks between the Eagles and Vikings about McNabb.

And the Oakland Tribune has maintained no one in the Raiders organization has said there have been talks with the Eagles. Other reports say there have been.

Could the Raiders be interested in Rosenfels as a backup plan in case they can't land McNabb? Rosenfels would certainly be a much cheaper -- and much, much less accomplished -- alternative. Could acquiring Rosenfels be another QB to battle for the starting job and provide some insurance should JaMarcus Russell continue to struggle, but also represent Oakland's intention not to give up on him completely yet? Obviously, the Raiders would not be getting McNabb to be Russell's -- or Bruce Gradkowski's -- backup.

And the drama continues ...

Hold on Up there ICanTakeIt - MCNabb was drafted with the 2nd overall pick in 1999 - the ONLY team who passed up on him were the Browns, who took Couch (which worked out smashingly for them, and all the experts thought Couch was the better choice...). This isn't about moving on, it's about moving back. Kolb is too prone to interceptions - this team is toast without a smart QB. But, since you brought it up: You know who the SAINTS did pass up on? Along with every other team in the NFL? Your buddy Kolb. In fact, some teams passed up on him twice.

Why no one will give up a number 1 choice? Business and shrewd dealing. There is fallout coming major publications in S.F. and league wide. The overall feeling is, "McNabb as a 49er would dramatically increase the high probability of winning the west AND put them in a Super Bowl discussion." The move to the Raiders will elevate their team, but not like S.F. I am awestruck, 'Why Eagles fans feel so discontent for McNabb when other teams see his true value?' Janet Jackson has a song, "Don't know you got when it's gone!" It was a hit song and when all of this bad tidings blows up, we'll only need to add the word "oops" to the title.

anshah, intelligent people can have conflicting opinions and still be civil, wouldn't you agree? Wiff has yet to grasp the concept. He has no tolerence for anything he doesn't agree with. wiff's way or the highway. Same BS every day, same double talk every day, same double standard every day. But hey, the little guy is persistent along with being REEEEEALLY repetitive, isn't he? Mosquitoes are persistent too though. Sometime they just need to be swatted. And I'm not an Eagles fan? Hahahaha. That's rich. That coming from a guy that LAUGHED when he thought the Eagles were going to get beaten in Carolina in game 1 this year. Know any Eagles fans that LAUGH when they think their team will lose? More hippocracy by the wiffster. He'll never get it, never will.

Mish you're a moron. Teams don't want to give up a #1 draft pick for a possible one year rental. Plus the fact that teams already know that the Eagles will get rid of one QB before camp starts. Kolb is considered their QB of the future, and Vick doesn't have much trade value...which leaves McNabb. So why wouldn't they wait as long as possible and see how far the Eagles asking price will go down? They aren't going to give up a #1 pick for a 33 year old QB. I'd rather see the Eagles let McNabb play out his contract and try to win a SB this year. McNabb didn't blow it alone last year. We can attribute our losses to Dallas to poor defensive play and an inconsistent offensive line too. We keep McNabb as the starter, Kolb as the backup, and release Vick. Kolb can have his shot next year.

Just can't stand it when I point out your wiffocritical posts can you? Does the truth hurt that much, especially when I post YOUR words? Maybe screaming a little louder with help? Perhaps shaking the gates on your crib will bring you some attention? Time for a nice bottle [no I meant milk, not Jim Beam]? You own me? Hahahahahahahahaha, maybe on Planet Blubberfat but here on Earth, never happened, never will. But you keep swingin' away there slugger? I'll let you know when you actually say something correct. It's still early in the year, there's still time. C'mon wiff. You can do it! NOT! And like I said before, GROW UP and thanks for proving me right, yet again. Hahahahahaha.

The media in philly has wanted McNabb gone for so long they write about anything and everything involving him possibly leaving. It's kinda sad. If you can get value for McNabb get it, because there's no way in the world he would re-sign with this organization and spend one more day in this ungrateful town. Sure he's saying all the right things as he always does, but that's because he's a smart guy. Trade McNabb, Give the great white hope a shot and build a better defense. Philly media will get the color- I mean kind of QB they always wanted and some other team (49ers?) will get a veteran itching for a fresh start. I'd bet anything Donovan wishes he had a hot tub time machine to go back and unsign that 112 mil contract he signed!

Mish... Kurt Warner was a Superbowl QB and no one wanted him so he became Eli's mentor. Then AZ took him as a backup only to start and take the team to the bowl.

Gotta love wiff's latest rant. Yesterday it was "where there's fire there's smoke" but now wiff is hoping McNabb returns so that there will be some sort of uprising? And yesterday it was "all Philly Eagle fans should get behind their QB"? So what you really mean is people should get behind KK if he's the QB and NOT get behind DM if he returns? That's proof of what I've been saying all along about you wiff. You'd rather see DM lose than the Eagles win. That's really pathetic. Get this straight wiff. It's the TEAM not the players. You either root for the Eagles or you don't. There is NO middle ground. Either get in line or go root for your real favorite team, the Giants. It's never been plainer and I do so love it when you choke on your own words. What flavor Keds do you wear wiff? When will you be done with the circular reasoning? You are making me dizzy with all your double talk but that one was the worst. All traitors step to the rear please. wiff, today you are acting like a little 1 year old baby screaming in your crib because you can't get what you wants. Waaa, I want my KK, waaa. Still throwing tantrums? Puberty yet wiff? Let me put it to you directly: GROW UP! You are embarrassing.

BIG PHILLY - what kool-aid are you drinking that makes you think the Eagles team last year, or this year for that matter, actually have a chance to win the Super Bowl? The Eagles have more holes to fill than a pair of lonewolf's Jockey's. But if you don't know enough about the sport and simply blame the QB than by all means show your ignorance.

This is proof that nobody in the NFL thinks McNabb is a top quarterback. Nobody wants him. This is the Eagles asking for too much in return. If Brady/Brees/PManning were available, a deal would be done. McNabb is simply not going to get you a trophy. Kolb is the future.

He can't help it.It's a shame that we can't trade Igu-dollar to the Raiders

Keep #5. I just can't believe all this hype over a back up QB. People please wake up, remember Bobby Hoying, AJ Feeley..there was a huge cry for these bench riders and they stunk up the joint. Now we're crying for Kolb...So when did he become Tom Brady? Did I miss somthing, was I in a coma and missed all the games last year? I saw a mediocre QB...I didn't see a starter. If anything we need a coach who knows how to balance an offense and make better personnel decisions. WAKE UP!!!!!!!!

lol, so true number4not5...he is too sensitive and just pretends to not care, just like he pretends he isnt nervous before a big game...he goes back to arizona or chicago and complains to mommy and daddy...after all this trade talk if hes back hel say some nonsense about wanting to "get it done" or "winning one for philadelphia", and then he will go like 1-12 for 25 yards in the first half against one of the first oppenents, they will lose, and he will get injured by week 7 or 8. then its Kolb time, finally.

I'll take McNabb on the Eagles anyday. Only thing, he's more comfortable playing from behind. So start Kolb, and when we're 3-5, send Donovan roaring back in to save the day and get us to the playoffs. (Playoffs?) Then start Kolb in the playoff game, and send McNabb in when we're down 14-3. Perfect.

I agree with Howard Eskin's opinion tonight regarding McNabb. I also dont see any team offering us enough to move McNabb. Teams know McNabb is on the block but no one is even making a fair offer for him so he will stay here.. And as they say.. sometimes the best moves are the ones you dont make.. Mcnabb is the far superior athlete and QB compared with Kolb. Keep building around him and remind yourselves about John Elway and how he was almost run out of Denver for not winning the big game. And then what happened?

@IcanTakeit: The Saints did not pass up on drafting McNabb. They didn't have the opportunity. The Browns took Tim Couch with the 1st pick and McNabb went 2nd to the Birds. The Saints did trade away their entire draft to take Ricky Williams, but they never had a shot at McNabb.

How is it that none of you have figured this out yet? Nobody wants to take a chance on trading for McNabb because there's no guarantee that he'll sign an extension with that team with his contract being up next year. If I were him, I wouldn't resign with the Raiders, Bills, or Rams. I'd either stay put, or hope to work out a deal with the Vikes or Cards, and nobody could blame him for that.

Props to Weaver...and to "Nothingbutthetruth"! To ICanTakeit, The Eagles SB was 5 years ago (2005), and in 2009, they were a half-decent defensive performance from being in (and possibly winning) the SB. And this past year, they only had the 5th highest scoring team in the NFL (ranked second until the last reg season game at Dallas) despite a poor line, almost no "36", and a bunch of rookies and first-year Eagles. To others: There may be a slew of reasons why McNabb has not been dealt yet: 1) The Eagles really don't want to trade him 2) High salary 3) Uncertainty over 2011, and McNabb only signed thru 2010 4) Eagles holding out for more, etc. Do you really think that all the other teams want to telegraph their moves any more than the Birds do? Unbelievable lack of logic, patience and common sense on the part of so many.

This is about the Super Bowl anymore, we just don't have the pieces to make the run this year. It doesn't matter who starts at QB, what does matter is the class we should show Don for giving us a great run, and possibly more, if Andy and Co. choose...not tearing him down b/c he smiles and plays the air quitar...

Are people really this dense? The reason McNabb hasn't been traded is because of a combination of things mostly due to bad timing. I think that it's interesting that many active and retired players think that the Eagles would be nuts to trade McNabb. I've seen this man get booed at his draft day, had beer poured on him going into the tunnel at home, received the racist criticism by Rush Limbaugh, called a sellout by a NAACP member, had a pair of primadona WR's constantly badmouth him, has a local boxer question his heart every chance he gets, has the hourly backlash from NEGADELPHIA NATION and top of all of that he has the daily bashing in the local paper, websites and media. Never once did he ever criticize any of those who disrespected him. And all this man has done is taken a abismal franchise to 5 Conference Champioships and 1 Super Bowl while playing 80% of the time with offensive rejects. The man has 1 year left it's time for the Eagles to HONOR their contract. As for the guys who keep saying McNabb will never win a Super Bowl when you are finished using your Crystal Ball tell me what lottery numbers to play for PowerBall. How can a man predict the future of someone else when he can't even predict his own?

Wondo wake up man....Mcnabb wont win you a superbowl....he got close couldnt get it done and that was 6 years ago. its been a decade of being "in the hunt" and you have no trophies to show for it while the lowly LOL SAINTS (who passed on drafting McNabb) now have a trophy. all that and you STILL want to say, "lets try again in 2010??"....wake up man, its over. time to move on

If McNabb is a SuperBowl caliber QB, why does no one want to give up a #1 pick for him.......? Already 11 QBs have been traded/signed with new teams this offseason, and not 1 of those teams seriously tried to get McNabb....actions speak louder than words...

Donovan would want starter's $$$$; no one will pay him that much to be a backup.

It's obvious no one wants McNabb and the writers at Philly.com have a quota of writing 10 pretend McNabb stories a day ...

Why would anyone want to keep 5? He's proven time and again that he's the most overrated athlete of the last decade. I'd take Kolb, who might actually be able to throw an accurate pass, over McNabb's tired shtick any day of the week.

Nobody wants McNabb. Maybe we should just keep him as a backup in case Kolb gets hurt.

i want to keep #5 too and win a BOWL. But we not bout to do that so trade him (top corner and picks) and keep the chains moving.

What's more annoying - daily mock drafts by columnists that are sure to go wrong or the daily McNabb internet rumors worth it's weight in virtual gold AND now including rumors which don't even include McNabb.

Keep McNabb, draft well and get '09 injured players back and go for the damn Bowl. Trading McNabb is forfeiting any chance of winning in 2010. There will be no football in 2011 and this whole thing leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. KEEP 5!!!!
