Anatomy of a firing

POSTED: Monday, December 31, 2012, 11:40 AM

How would you rate Andy Reid's career as head coach of the Eagles?
Excellent. It's been a winning era.
Good. It's been a winning era, but they didn't win the big one.
Fair. Too many losses in too many big games.
Poor. He had a good run, but it's downhill for a long time.

According to an Eagles team official, here is the rough timeline of what has happened so far on this momentous Monday morning at the NovaCare Complex:

Reid and team owner Jeffrey Lurie met between 8:30 and 9:00. It was at this meeting, the official said, that Lurie informed Reid that he was fired.

Reid addressed the team at 10 am at a regularly-scheduled team meeting, to tell them of his release. The official and several players described the meeting as "emotional." Safety Kurt Coleman and running back LeSean McCoy both said that the players gave Reid a standing ovation when he was finished talking.

After Reid was finished, Lurie addressed just the players in a meeting. Then, at 10:45 am, all of the club's front office employees gathered in the complex cafeteria. There, Lurie offered what were described as "kind words" in his introduction, after which Reid addressed the group and thanked them.

As of 11:30 am, Reid remains in the building and is meeting with any players who sought him out. The Lurie press conference is scheduled for 1 pm. As of now, Reid is not scheduled to attend.

Also as of now, none of the rest of the coaching staff has been fired.

dont be absurd. if any potential head coach that is interviewed shows even the slightest interest in seeing what Vick can do they should immediately be shown the door. vick is an aging, injury prone, turnover machine and absolutely NOT the piece to build a team around. dont wait til february to send him packing.

Only if he's shining Reid's shoes.

Should have happened well before this but I'd like to thank Andy and all of his assistants over the years for some good football. Hopefully they'll all get new positions somewhere and prosper. Thanks big guy, just sayin'...

Andy will do well with fresh start. Hopefully he takes the break he's needed for the past few years to deal with the awful things that have happened in his family life. Too bad he never got the big one, but still the best Eagles coach we've seen.

elijah29: Is that a joke or something? He'll end up somewhere too but will only continue to be mediocre at best.

Reid will be great if he learns the right things from this experience. Stop trying to be so cute so often. Do the obvious more often & the reaches less often. Draft the best players, not the ones you think you can "remake". Speed up your in-game decision making.

The only way Vick "shines again" is if he's in the railroad station shining my shoes! He is the perfect Andy Reid QB though - just good enough to be mediocre!

I believe he still had one year on his contract. A 5 million dollar severance should ease his pain

Fair Winds and Following Seas to Andy Reid and his family! He and the team will both benefit from a fresh start... Now it's time to get rid of all the dead wood, and get back some heart! And to beat a dead horse: don't you have to shine "once", before you can shine again?

Thanks Andy. 4th and 26 was one of the greatest days of my life. I had just shot a cow elk, and was sitting in a bar in Gardiner Montana watching the game. Life will never be that good again.

Reid will win again before the Birds do. JL is sold on HR despite all of his evident shortcomings. Eagles are on the downslide. Too bad Tannenbaum never got the chance to own the team. He was a smart guy who would have put together a winning formula. Go Steelers, the only team from PA to root for anymore.

now is the time for soon real football.this one of the happiest days of my sports life, to go along with the day mcnabb was traded.people think the eagles are going to fall off the face of the earth and that is so far from the truth.with a more capable coach we could of have at least 1 super bowl.every year reid was OUTCOACHED by rookie head!something thats unheard for truly great coaches.show me an area of coaching where he could be consider a good coach. he was the winningest coach in team history but we have a BAD team history!TIMES OURS!

Andy success was on the backs of Ray Rhodes holdovers and Jim Johnson.

The coaches of the other NFL teams that were fired today thanked the fans. Andy walked out the back door, and didn't address the fans. Nice job Andy.
