76ers fire Jordan
Eddie Jordan’s brief career as 76ers coach will officially end Thursday.
Comcast-Spectacor, which owns the Sixers, will fire Jordan, in his first year with the organization, during a press conference scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, this according to a source close to the situation.
The Sixers, 27-55, finished their disastrous season on Wednesday night against the Orlando Magic at Amway Arena.
Jordan’s imminent dismissal was reported in The Inquirer over a month ago.
Comcast-Spectacor will be obligated to pay Jordan for two more seasons, or approximately $6 million, through the 2011-2012 season; On June 1, 2009, Jordan signed a four-year contract, the final season of which was a team option.
Sixers President and General Manager Ed Stefanski, who executed the three-week coaching search that resulted in Jordan’s hiring, is scheduled to make the announcement.
According to a source close to Stefanski, as of Wednesday he was continuing in his same capacity and had been given no indication he would be removed from that role.
The Sixers were Jordan’s third head coaching position in the NBA: He coached the Sacramento Kings from 1996-98 and the Washington Wizards from 2003-09.
Jordan was fired from both his previous positions.
When hired by the Sixers, Jordan’s lifetime record was 230-288. Entering Wednesday night’s game, that record had dipped to 257-343.
More coming ...

Sixers need to make trades and Keep Jordan for the long term like what Boston did w/ Doc. TRDSupra- 1 down, 1 to go. brio
Comment removed.- Never should have been here in the 1st place
- 1 Ed down, 1 to go.
Really? He was a fan favorite for the 300 fans that actually showed up to the game. CrashTestCorzine
Firing Jordan isn't going to solve the Sixers problems........ He was not a good coach because the players are not a good group as a whole. So what can you expect with him coming into this situation from last year. They have no true point guard........(they let Andre Miller go and never replaced him) and no real inside presence (Sammy D is a joke) so he can only do so much with what he has to work with....... He may have proved sucessful if give a chance to trade and/or draft some talent for this team. But the real problem is that the Sixers organization gives out guaranteed contracts like they are candy and I still haven't seen 90% of the guys who got them actually play like they are/were worth them! sykesl19119
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH. Crosbysucks
Clearly Jordan was responsible for the players defending as though it were an inconvenience (sarcasm). The NBA has had to have figured out a way to quantify whether or not a player sticks someone like their lives depend on it. Say what you want about his athleticism and potential and range or whatever but Thad doesn't have a killer attitude on D. Murrayman
wrong philly fever, 1 ed down 2 to go.. snider has run the sixers for 16 years without a championship.. add to that the 35 since the flyers last won the cup and you have over 50 sports seasons without a championship under the direction of ed snider. snider is where the problem starts. zwarte piet
Bring back "The Mayor" Steve Mix as the color analyst. Mr. Black
Comment removed.- Agreed- Jordan was set up for failure in the first place- glad to see him gone and hopefully start a new era...I mean, this is 76ers Basketball!!! Let's show some pride in the team and refuse to accept the mess that was the 09/10 Philly team- The NBA might be the easiest league to turn around a terrible team. I think Elton Brand might be the only player on this team who is not able to run and gun- I wish Don Nelson were available...where's Doug Moe when you need him? I would love to see Larry Brown back here to develop the same core of players. It's only been a year since the Sixers were a .500 team. Their record indicates how bad the coaching was; the players were clearly confused or not buying into Jordan's system by the All Star Break. We can get back on track. kjuggs77
I think Steve Lappas and his "motion offense" would be a great fit here. Tacklebury
@ Mr. Black: +1 for the Mayor. DennyP
