The Flyers' offense, among the NHL's best this season, looked sluggish for 40 minutes tonight before awakening in an electric third period.

It was too late.

The Flyers huffed and puffed but couldn't overcome a 2-0 third-period deficit as they dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision to the Buffalo Sabres in front of a sellout crowd at the Wachovia Center.

"Playoff-like hockey, good intensity," Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff said after his team ended the Flyers' winning streak at five games.

The Flyers, who averaged 4.6 goals a game during their winning streak, had more good scoring chances in the third period than in the first two periods combined. They outshot Buffalo by 15-5 in the final period, but Ryan Miller made a handful of late saves to halt their comeback.

Buffalo went 2 for 7 on the power play; the Flyers were 0 for 4.

In the first two periods, the Flyers were guilty of six penalties - three more than the Sabres - and it took them out of their rhythm.

With the Flyers on a power play and trailing, 2-1, early in the third period, Danny Briere was cross-checked in the stomach by Buffalo's Chris Butler. Briere retaliated with a high stick and received a double-minor.

"It was just a reaction . . . but it's definitely not a penalty you want to take at that point," Briere said. "I think the whole game, that's what got us in trouble. We spent way too much time killing [penalties]. We've been good lately, but we kind of got away from that.

"A team like Buffalo that has a lot of skill and good players on the power play, you can't give them so much time."

The Sabres avenged last week's 5-2 loss in Buffalo.

"We had a good start tonight, but then we started taking penalties and giving momentum away," Flyers captain Mike Richards said. "It's hard to find your legs when you're killing penalties the whole first period."

Down by 2-0, the Flyers got to within a goal when Chris Pronger scored on a point drive with 17 minutes, 17 seconds remaining. Darroll Powe set a screen in front, and the puck whizzed past Miller's glove.

Less than four minutes later, Paul Gaustad, who was in a brief scrum with Pronger in the first period, redirected a point shot by Tyler Myers past Ray Emery. The power-play score, with Briere in the penalty box, gave Buffalo a 3-1 lead with 13:35 left.

Jeff Carter dug out a loose puck and scored a shorthanded goal on a rebound, getting the Flyers to within 3-2 with 9:39 to play.

Eight nights earlier, Dan Carcillo scored two goals in the victory at Buffalo. Carcillo has been much more disciplined this season, but he took an early penalty that led to the game's first goal tonight.

The left winger got into a pushing match with Myers and cross-checked the defenseman, leaving the Flyers shorthanded after 1:28.

Thomas Vanek cashed in with a power-play goal, scoring on a one-timer from the slot.

Buffalo controlled the first period, outshooting the Flyers, 12-8, and the Sabres could have built a bigger lead if three of their shots - including two by Jason Pominville - hadn't rattled off the post.

The Sabres, despite playing the previous night, showed lots of energy in the first two periods of the highly physical game.

Tyler Ennis gave the Sabres a 2-0 lead when he scored from the right circle, using a spin-around shot and putting it between the legs of Emery, who slid from the left post to the right post and seemed out of sync.

"The guy started to go behind the net and I went too early and found myself on the wrong side of the net, and I tried to get back and got a piece of it but it snuck in there," Emery said. "It's one you want to have back."

Ennis, making his NHL debut, arrived from Portland of the AHL about 11/2 hours before the game. The center replaced Drew Stafford, who suffered a hip injury the previous night.

Breakaways. Forward James van Riemsdyk missed the game with the flu, and Riley Cote was inserted into the lineup for the fourth time this season. . . . Defenseman Ryan Parent, who had missed four games with a groin injury, returned and was paired with Oskars Bartulis. Danny Syvret was a healthy scratch. . . . Buffalo became just the third opponent to score first in the Flyers' 16 games.

the moment that define the game for me was when Pronger was slashed, and made such a dramatic show of losing his stick. I'm surprised the incompetent refs didn't call him for unsportsmanlike, but he showed up their bias so clearly they had no choice.

They played sloppy first and second periods. They got it together in the third - many more shots on goal, but too late.

Ryan Parent. The guy just can't play. Syvret, Bartulis, Tollefson are all better. The Flyers need to quit trying to substantiate this guy just because he was part of the Forsberg trade.

The entire game was marred on both sides by the god-awful penalties for having the stick knocked out of your hand. This is hockey! If you can't hold on to your stick, you should be a figure skater. It's embarrassing how bad the officiating was (on both sides) for that ridiculous infraction. There was no flow, and the neither team had a chance to establish any team of game plan. The only constant in this game was, if someone taps your stick, drop it as quick as you can and the other guy will get a penalty. What a horrible game tonight. This sport is so far behind all others in Philly because the rules are outright ridiculous.

The NHL has become a joke. Does the NFL commish and other really think fanas like seeing these penalties because it creates more scoring. The "new" NHL as they call it so commonly, is a joke. And it deserves some bad publicity. I rather have seen a 1-0 game tonight without all those crappy calls every time a players stick gets knocked out of his hand at the chance there might be another goal be either team.

Sloppy and sluggish 1st and 2nd. Sometimes I just can't believe the lack of execution. Passes off the mark, pucks jumping over sticks...Why did it finally take them being down 2-0 in the third to finally wake up? Makes sense though that by the 3rd, the Sabres were a step behind since they played last night. Flyers should've had more energy and it finally showed. Miller was good when he had to be. He's having a pretty sick season so far. I want to hate the guy, he's pretty much USA Hockey, so I guess I'll be rooting for him in the Olympics.

Normally one loss like this wouldn't upset me too much. However, the entire Atlantic looks like the toughest division in the NHL. At some point we need to gain ground. We showed life in the 3rd but were flat the first 2 periods. Hopefully we can carry over the 3rd period play into next game.

Maybe it's because the flyers looked like they could care less to even be there in the first and second periods. hockey is a 60 minute game, not just the last 20. they deserved to lose. show up and play the whole game or don't waste all our time. this game defined this team both tonight and the last couple of seasons.

Still makes sickness in my stomach! The ill feelings persist every time i see the phlyers Play. They don't even appreciate him, even tho they know their was a huge mistake made(no admittance of coarse). Now they R stuck, like that piece of black pepper or basil in ur teeth, which seems it show its self at awkward times. They obviously Screwed themselves, and didn't bring, the lube(and not Hakan either). Point being, Watch n Danny skate around wit the wrong colors on sickens and saddens. The Incompetent people, in the wrong places messed it up for two great teams. (and i mean gm's on both sides blew it hard and then went out for dinner.) Both franchises lost out because one went under and the other went over. The fans, who always get it the worst, are made to suffer the most. Was a Great fit for the blue and gold, but not so much for the Orange n black. Anyways, this particular game went nicely for the ones who would be the most worthy of it. As the "Hammer" looked on, seeing two former teams, prolly in disgust of the direction the game has turned to, stick chopping not head chopping. At least he saw an impressive display by some, mostly one. He stood and shouted "Miller Time". Drink up my friends, time to get on the band wagon. For the city who loves their brothers, dont seem to have the same respect and love for man's best friend. Ouch, lets hope u guys keep him, we don't want that disgrace here, among us.
