Pete Mackanin fines Phillies after Franco's error

CLEARWATER, Fla. - All the inhabitants of the Phillies clubhouse will feel the pain of Maikel Franco's error when they each have to pay manager Pete Mackanin a whopping $1 on Sunday morning.

CLEARWATER, Fla. - All the inhabitants of the Phillies clubhouse will feel the pain of Maikel Franco's error when they each have to pay manager Pete Mackanin a whopping $1 on Sunday morning.

Mackanin said Franco's error - the third baseman lost a pop-up in the sun on Saturday afternoon despite having sunglasses resting on the brim of his hat - warranted one of the manager's team-wide fines. The team is penalized each time a player slips up, whether it's not hustling or failing to get a bunt down. The manager hopes the rest of the team gets on the player who brought on the fine.

"I don't get it," Mackanin said after a 13-8 loss to Pittsburgh. "He lost the ball in the sun. We're going to have to fine him a dollar."

Franco made sure to wear his shades the next inning. He said he just forgot to wear them. Franco responded with a diving catch and hit a grand slam in the seventh. It was his fourth homer of the spring but first since Feb. 27.

"I don't like the way he's swinging the bat right now," Mackanin said. "He's in that mid-spring lull and I want him to get as many at-bats as I can right now to get him back on track."

Joseph sits out

Tommy Joseph did not play Saturday and is not listed on Sunday's lineup as he continues to rest his bruised left hand. He told manager Pete Mackanin he was available to play Saturday after testing the hand in pregame fielding and batting practice. Joseph, not overly concerned with the bruise, said it was fine. He was hit by a pitch Tuesday and the X-rays were negative. The Phillies could keep him out until Tuesday. Monday is an off day.

Hinojosa still sidelined

Righthander Dalier Hinojosa began last season as the Phillies closer, a title that lasted less than a week, and he is in camp this spring as a non-roster invitee. But Hinojosa has not yet appeared in a game and is unlikely to do so before the spring ends. He has felt discomfort in his right shoulder. "Right now," Hinojosa said, "I feel better." But the plan calls for rest.

Extra bases

Jeremy Hellickson allowed five earned runs on nine hits in five innings. He threw 87 pitches for his longest outing of the spring. The righthander was pleased with his curveball but not with the elevation of his other pitches. . . . Catcher Ryan Hanigan made a terrific catch in the third inning. He tracked down a pop-up, but the ball bounced off his glove, forcing Hanigan to dive forward to glove the ball before it hit the dirt.
