Former 'Nova hoops star Nancy Bernhardt dies

FORMER VILLANOVA basketball star Nancy Bernhardt died Thursday, Sept. 22, after a battle with breast cancer. Bernhardt played for Wildcats coach Harry Perretta from 1980-84. She is a native of Glenside, and a graduate of Bishop McDevitt High School.

Bernhardt played for Wildcats coach Harry Perretta from 1980-84. She is a native of Glenside, and a graduate of Bishop McDevitt High School.

In 119 games, Bernhardt scored 2,018 points, one of two players in the history of Villanova women's basketball to score 2,000 career points. Her 2,018 points rank as the second most in school history. She also is fifth on the school's all-time assist list with 465, and 10th in rebounds with 631.

A two-time All-Big East selection, Bernhardt was a 1984 Eastman Kodak Region II All-American. In her four-year career, Villanova had a record of 87-32.

A funeral is set for Wednesday at St. Genevieve's Church in Flourtown (1225 Bethlehem Pike). There will be a viewing at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Mass at 11 a.m.
