Goeddel may be done for the season

NEW YORK-Tyler Goeddel's rookie season may be finished. The outfielder left the Phillies on Saturday afternoon to continue to be monitored for a concussion he suffered last week.

Manager Pete Mackanin said he was unsure whether Goeddel would be able to play in the three games this week at Atlanta or the final three games of the season next weekend against the visiting Mets. Goeddel was hit in the head by a 93-mph fastball Wednesday. He was with the team in New York on Friday.

Goeddel batted .192 this season in 89 games after the Phillies acquired him in December in the Rule 5 draft. He had a .258 on-base percentage in 213 at-bats. Goeddel, 23, played sparingly over the final three months. He could start next season at triple A.

Mackanin said it might be good for Goeddel to play again this season in case the incident makes him uncomfortable in the batter's box.

"It might be good for him to get back on the horse that threw him type of thing," Mackanin said. "I don't know if that matters. Get that fear factor out of the way, if there is any."

Thompson's final start?

The Phillies will determine whether Jake Thompson will continue to pitch this season after he makes his start Sunday afternoon. The rookie righthander is tentatively scheduled to make one more start, on Oct. 1 against the Mets in the second-to-last-game of the season.

Thompson has pitched 1791/3 innings this season between the majors and triple A. He pitched 1322/3 innings last season in the minors plus seven innings with Team USA in the Pan-Am Games.

"I'm just happy as a 22-year-old that he has some exposure and his feet wet at the major-league level," Mackanin said. "He knows what he's up against at the major-league level. I think that's valuable for any young guy who might be in the plans for the future."
