Paredes, Phillies beat Marlins in 13 innings

With nothing to play for but good old fashioned pride, the Phillies dealt a blow to a team that is still playing somewhat meaningful baseball.

With nothing to play for but good old fashioned pride, the Phillies dealt a blow to a team that is still playing somewhat meaningful baseball.

Jimmy Paredes' RBI single over a drawn-in infield with one out in the 13th inning provided the Phillies with a 4-3 win over the Miami Marlins at Citizens Bank Park.

Besides wiping out the sour taste of Thursday's 15-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Phillies also hurt the Marlins' ever slimmer postseason chances. Miami began the day four games out of the second wild-card spot.

Peter Bourjos opened the 13th inning with a single to left field off Marlins closer A.J. Ramos. Cameron Rupp struck out. Odubel Herrera then singled, one pitch after seeing a ball sail by his head. Freddy Galvis was then intentionally walked to load the bases.

Paredes then drilled his game-winner, ending the 4-hour, 43-minute affair.

The Phillies have 14 games remaining and nine of them are against teams still in the playoff hunt with two more against Miami and seven against the New York Mets.

Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard made a diving stop to his right of a Dee Gordon grounder to begin the Marlins two-run fifth inning. Howard got up and then barely beat the fleet second baseman by diving to tag the bag.

Gordon was originally called out but after the umpires conferred, he was awarded first base on defensive obstruction by pitcher Adam Morgan. The Phillies lefthander got in Gordon's way while he was literally sliding into first base in an attempt to beat Howard to the bag. Morgan was given an error on the play.

Gordon would steal second and after a walk to Giancarlo Stanton, Martin Prado hit an RBI double to right-center.

Stanton returned from the disabled list on Sept. 6 from a Grade 3 groin strain but Friday was his first game in the field since his injury.

The plan wasn't to play the entire game his first time in right field, and Stanton was replaced in the sixth inning by Ichiro Suzuki.

Morgan was relieved by David Hernandez after getting Christian Yellich to fly to center for the first out.

The Marlins would eventual score another run in the fifth on J.T. Realmuto's RBI single. Both runs were unearned.

Morgan pitched 41/3 innings and allowed the two unearned runs, on seven hits. He struck out two and walked four while throwing 86 pitches, 54 for strikes.

The Phillies took the lead with three runs in the sixth.

Howard opened the inning with a towering home run to right-center. It was his 22nd of the season and 379th of his career, tying Howard with Tony Perez and Orlando Cepeda for 70th on the all-time list.

Howard is expected to receive the majority of playing time as his tenure with the Phillies is coming to an expected close.

Rupp then hit a hustle double and that ended the evening for starter Tom Koehler. He was replaced by lefthander Mike Dunn, who was greeted by Herrera's RBI double. Galvis singled to right put runners on the corners. The Phillies took the lead on Aaron Altherr's RBI fielder's choice.

The Marlins tied the score on Derek Dietrich's first career pinch hit home run with two outs in the eighth off righthander Edubray Ramos.
