Penn women lose in lacrosse quarterfinals

The Quakers, the seventh seed, lost to unseeded Penn State, 8-4, in the NCAA Division I women's lacrosse tournament quarterfinals at University Park, Pa., on Saturday.

The game started well for the Quakers, whose Caroline Cummings and Catherine Dickinson scored the first two goals. But Penn had no answer for the Nittany Lions, who netted six straight goals in a span of 7 minutes, 21 seconds near the end of the opening half. Conversely, the Quakers (15-5) ended the half being shut out for 22:31.

The Nittany Lions were led by Madison Cyr with two goals and two assists, and Madison Carter with two goals.

Penn's offense struggled as the Lions held the Quakers' top scoring trio of Nina Corcoran, Alex Condon, and Iris Williamson without a point. Cummings had three goals in the game for Penn - her second consecutive hat trick.

Penn State (14-6) advances to the national semifinals against North Carolina on May 27 at Talon Energy Stadium in Chester. Syracuse will play Sunday's winner of Maryland and Massachusetts in the other semifinal.

Division III women. The College of New Jersey will face Trinity (Conn.) on Sunday for a chance to play in the national semifinals May 28 at Talon Energy Stadium.

Division I men. Brown edged Navy, 11-10, and Maryland beat Syracuse, 13-7, to advance to the national semifinals May 28 at Lincoln Financial Field. The other two teams will be decided Sunday, when Notre Dame will face North Carolina and Loyola (Md.) will play Towson.

Division II men. Le Moyne reached the final when it beat Merrimack, 8-4. The other team for the May 29 final in Philadelphia will be determined Sunday, when Limestone plays Tampa.

Division III men. The semifinals will be Sunday to see who's coming to Philadelphia for the May 29 championship game. St. Lawrence and Tufts are in one game while Salisbury and Gettysburg play in the other.
