Rangers' Hamilton will start season on DL with injured knee

Texas Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton will start the season on the disabled list because of an injured left knee. Rangers assistant general manager Thad Levine said the five-time all-star, bothered by swelling in the knee, received a stem cell and platelet-rich plasma injection Monday, when he was examined by orthopedist James Andrews.

Hamilton, the 2010 AL MVP, will be on crutches for seven to 10 days and is projected to need eight weeks of recovery time. Levine said Hamilton likely would start a minor-league rehabilitation assignment in late April and the Rangers hope he will return to their lineup in early May.

Hamilton will be making his 11th trip to the disabled list.

"The reason we are giving him an eight-week program is so we don't cut any corners and give him a full spring training," Levine said.

Rockies adjust to spring training without Reyes

The Colorado Rockies have had some of the uncertainty surrounding Jose Reyes' status resolved, at least for spring training, but manager Walt Weiss said he understood the process was still unfolding.

The four-time all-star shortstop was placed on paid leave under Major League Baseball's new domestic violence policy pending the outcome of criminal proceedings.

Reyes was arrested Oct. 31 at a resort in Hawaii on a charge of abuse of a family or household member following an altercation with his wife. He pleaded not guilty and a trial is set for April 4, the day the Rockies open their season at the Arizona Diamondbacks.

With Reyes not participating in spring training, the way could be cleared for top prospect Trevor Story to make Colorado's opening day roster.

Suspension of Mets' Robles cut to 2 games

The suspension of New York Mets reliever Hansel Robles was cut from three games to two after he agreed to drop his appeal.

Robles will miss the first two games of the season. He was penalized for throwing near the head of a Philadelphia batter Sept. 30 after both teams had been warned. Robles and Mets manager Terry Collins were ejected in the sixth inning of a 7-5 loss to the Phillies.
