Allenby on alleged attack: 'I'm just happy to be alive'

Golfer Robert Allenby sayd he was abducted, beaten and robbed after missing cut in PGA Tour event in Honolulu.

GOLFER Robert Allenby had a tough weekend.

On Friday night in Hawaii, he was allegedly abducted, beaten and robbed after missing the cut of the Sony Open earlier in the day.

Yesterday, he discussed the incident with the Associated Press.

"You think that happens in the movie, not real life," said Allenby, whose left eye was swollen shut due to the attack. "I'm just happy to be alive."

Allenby said he remembers having dinner and drinks with a friend, but has difficulty recalling any other details.

He said he went back to the restaurant on Saturday to review tape from a surveillance camera. The film showed his friend talking with another patron. Later, Allenby is seen leaving with four men.

"I think [the patron] was a decoy, a distraction," Allenby said. "I went to the bathroom, came out and was told that my friend had left and was downstairs waiting for me. I go downstairs and then, bang! They knock me out and take me 6 or 7 miles away.

"I don't know what they hit me with between the eyeballs, whether a fist or a baseball bat. Whatever it was, it hurts. I seriously don't even remember meeting these people. That's what is weird. All I know is [the film showed] that I was walking very quietly with them and normal. It didn't make any sense at all."

Allenby said he wanted doctors to test him to see if he had been drugged, but was told it "was probably [already] out of your system."

When he came to - on the side of a road near a park - Allenby said he was attacked by homeless people.

"[They were] kicking me to see if I was alive, and then trying to steal everything else from me."

There wasn't much left.

Allenby said his wallet, money, driver's license, cellphone and PGA Tour badge were all taken by the men from the restaurant.

"I'm still shaking, still scared," Allenby said. "It's just so surreal, just amazing. How does that happen to me?"
