Giroux's injury forces Flyers to shift at camp

Center Claude Giroux's undisclosed lower-body injury, suffered 15 minutes after camp opened Friday, has had a domino effect on the Flyers.

Center Claude Giroux's undisclosed lower-body injury, suffered 15 minutes after camp opened Friday, has had a domino effect on the Flyers.

In Day 2 of coach Craig Berube's first camp, three of the lines were altered Saturday because of the injury.

Brayden Schenn, who had been penciled in as the top-line left winger with Giroux and right winger Jake Voracek, moved to center - the position he primarily played last season, while Michael Raffl played left wing. Raffl had been on the third line the previous day.

Because he played at center and wing last season, Schenn said he feels "confident and comfortable at both positions. I've played quite a few games at both."

The Flyers said Giroux would be sidelined about two weeks. If so, he would miss all eight preseason games.

Giroux was already back in the weight room Saturday, and there is hope he may be able to return to play at least one exhibition game - and build some chemistry with Schenn and Voracek.

"G's one of those guys that it doesn't take him long to get back to his A-game," Schenn said.

"Hopefully he'll be able to play some preseason games, because that's where you get into game shape," Voracek said. "I only played one preseason game last year [because of a back injury], and it hurt me in the beginning because I wasn't used to that speed of the game."

Breakaways. It was revealed that enforcer Jay Rosehill surprisingly won the team's speed-skating contest Tuesday, going from the end line to the opposite blue line in 5.5 seconds. Nick Schultz finished second, and Voracek was third. . . . Winger Jason Akeson was hit in the head with a puck and left the ice briefly but returned and showed no ill effects. Akeson was shifted to the third line Saturday with Vinny Lecavalier and R.J. Umberger. Akeson "passes the puck well, and obviously Vinny's a finisher," Berube said. . . . Sean Couturier centered Matt Read and Wayne Simmonds, and the other line had Pierre-Edouard Bellemare centering Zac Rinaldo and Darroll Powe.
