Eagles Notes: LeSean McCoy practicing with sore thumb

LeSean McCoy's right thumb is still wrapped, but the injury that caused him to leave Thursday's preseason game has not prevented the Eagles' Pro Bowl running back from practicing. McCoy said the thumb is "all right." X-rays revealed that there was no fracture or ligament damage.

"Right now, I haven't done so much with it as far as catching with it, running with it," McCoy said. "I've got two weeks."

The starters will not play in Thursday's preseason game against the New York Jets, so McCoy does not need to play until the Sept. 7 opener against Jacksonville. McCoy does not think he will need to keep his thumb wrapped for that game.

"No, I'll be fine for the opener," McCoy said. "Catch with two hands, one hand, spiking the ball, doing everything we need to do."

McCoy also said that his left big toe is "feeling good" after he missed one practice last week. That was the only time McCoy has missed this summer.

"You know I'm durable," he said.

McCoy also laughed off coach Chip Kelly's comment last week that McCoy has "OK" practice habits that are "great" on some days and "not so great" on others.

"We talked about that," McCoy said. "He has fun with the media. He doesn't give you guys a lot. He knows I work hard. Any player will tell you that."

Vick's return

Michael Vick will start Thursday's game for New York in his return to Lincoln Financial Field, Jets coach Rex Ryan told reporters on Sunday. Ryan said Vick would not play long.

Vick's last time as an opponent in Philadelphia was Dec. 31, 2006, which was his final game with the Atlanta Falcons.

Vick will begin the season as the backup quarterback in New York. He traded teams with Eagles backup quarterback Mark Sanchez, who will not play Thursday.

Battle at safety

Defensive coordinator Bill Davis did not want to name his starting lineup, but he said Nate Allen was ahead of Earl Wolff in the competition to start next to Malcolm Jenkins at safety. Allen started the first three preseason games and Kelly said that Allen would not play on Thursday.

"I think Nate has the lead," Davis said. "But it's not over. We'll continue to watch this preseason game and see how it goes."

Extra points

Linebacker Connor Barwin (knee) and Jenkins (unknown injury) continued to miss practice. . . . Davis said recently released defensive lineman Joe Kruger was a "hard decision," but the 2013 seventh-round pick could not beat out the other two-gap defensive ends. Vinny Curry, Brandon Bair, and Taylor Hart are the Eagles' reserve defensive ends.
