The ball skipped underneath Domonic Brown's outstretched glove, rolled to the wall, and a collective groan christened Citizens Bank Park. Four Kansas City Royals scampered around the bases. When they stopped, gobs of Phillies fans departed before the seventh-inning stretch.

"Once the ball gets behind you," Charlie Manuel said, "the game is just about over."

Baseball returned Friday to South Philadelphia, and the scene was so reminiscent of last season's mediocrity. The result: A 13-4 loss to Kansas City, one marred by a withering offense and feeble bullpen.

No opponent scored more runs against the Phillies in their home opener since 1932, when the New York Giants won, 14-5, at the Baker Bowl, which was demolished 63 years ago. The nine-run defeat was the most lopsided in a home opener since an 11-0 loss to St. Louis in 1990.

A flurry of offense Friday boosted the Phillies to a 4-0 lead through three innings. The final six were ugly. In the ninth, with their team trailing by nine, the scattered remaining Phillies fans waved their white towels. Once Kratz flied to right for the 27th out, sarcasm ceded to disappointment.

"You don't want to lose your opener like that," Ryan Howard said.

The Royals scored 11 runs after the fifth inning. They battered a Phillies bullpen that was advertised in spring training as improved. The same disturbing trends from 2012 persisted.

Phillies relievers inherited six runners, and all six scored. Manuel intentionally loaded the bases in the sixth inning by walking pinch-hitter Billy Butler for the lefty-lefty matchup between Alex Gordon and Jeremy Horst. Starter Kyle Kendrick said he wanted the chance to finish the inning.

"Butler is their best hitter," Manuel said. "He's the guy I wasn't going to let beat us today."

Gordon rocked an 88 m.p.h. Horst fastball to the gap in right-center for a three-run triple. That initiated the first boos of 2013.

Horst stayed for the seventh. He walked the leadoff batter and allowed two grounders that found holes. It created another bases-loaded jam for new pitcher Chad Durbin. The veteran righty permitted a sacrifice fly, a walk, and yet another three-run triple (this one by light-hitting second baseman Chris Getz).

    From the Sports Desk
    Stay Connected

It was a triple because Brown made a diving stab at the ball. At the very least, it was a single, and another run scored. Brown emerged empty-handed and, it was a back-breaking moment.

For Durbin, it represented another lackluster performance. He stumbled through spring training and his debut outing on opening day in Atlanta. Durbin is reprising his reputation as a slow starter.

Manuel said he wanted Durbin pitching in that situation because of his experience and reputation.

"It's usually not this bad of a start," Durbin said. "I felt good. That doesn't matter. It's a results-based league."

This day began with promise. Ten pitches into the game, the Phillies had three hits and a lead. Brown and Kratz blasted home runs off Royals starter Wade Davis.

The Phillies did not manage a hit after the third inning. Kansas City's anonymous relief corps - Bruce Chen, J.C. Gutierrez, Tim Collins and Luke Hochevar - tossed five scoreless innings and struck out six.

Meanwhile, the soft underbelly of the Phillies' bullpen was just that. Horst was a serviceable piece in 2012 but did not complete his job Friday. Durbin was signed for $1.1 million to add stability in the middle innings. All Raul Valdes did in spring training was throw strikes. He contributed his second forgettable outing of the young season, raising his ERA to 14.73 in the process.

A fan base that so often witnessed bullpen malaise last season expressed its displeasure.

"They let us know," Durbin said. "The anxiety, you hear it. You either thrive on it or don't. Four games in, I don't think it's that big a deal."

The Phils need a couple years in the cellar and some high draft picks to replace their aging lineup. Shop the minors, high schools, the Caribbean, and colleges for top prospects. Get ready to trade some older stars to contenders.

Still just 4-2, Rollins make a decision to try the forceout at second instead of getting the slow running Tejada at first. This kind of mistake cascades into a landslide with this team.

@blaster, we both have it absolutely positively 100% right! Great point about Ruin Tomorrow's willingness to pay heavily for a few players - especially that wonderful first baseman of ours - and fill out the rest of the team with junk.

What - we have all seen this exact movie before - KK good for 4 innings - starts getting batted around - Cholly at a loss - then the same relievers we've seen before that give up runs (why would you ever want Durbin back) - and the offense that can't hit the other team's pen. Yep same old same old. Unless the starter can hold a lead going into the 8th we have no chance. What makes this worse is Doc in his present state and KK are only good for 60-70 pitches. and Frandsen needs to bat 2nd and Stroll 5th.

Rebuilding time is here, people!!! Get rid of Amaro, Chollie, Howard, Utley, Halladay, Lee, all the scouts, etc. Let's get some young talent, restock our farm system, and build from within. This club should have won at least one more WS title, but choked it away. We had a nice run, but time to move on from the garbage that was 2012 and is going to be 2013...

You've got it absolutely positively 100 percent right. I am so tired of these washed has beens, never beens in the middle innings. Chad Durbin, are you kidding me. Amaro can spend millions of dollars on a first baseman who couldn't hit a breaking ball if his life depended on it but won't spend any money on decent middle relievers who can keep a losing game close. Outrageous

Maybe Charlie doesn't understand but when you have a 4 run lead in the 5th you are not supposed to lose...make a change on every pitch if you have. Charlie thinks he's the manager because he is such a good public speaker and gets along so well with the guys!

It's almost insane to read some of the comments as to why the Phillies are losing. For three seasons starting with the time they knew Werth was leaving Mr. Amaro was 'actively' inactive in searching for good enough talent to replace the RBI's lost when Werth and Ibanez were gone. Werth made a good business decision, played on a championship team, and is set for life. If memory serves me correctly, Ibanez being reduced to a part time player hit more home runs, and drove in more runs than the three donkeys that replaced him. The Phillies did him a favor letting him go. In both instances contributing players were replaced by players whose careers paralleled the fate of the Titanic; they hit an iceberg and sank. Ruben, Philadelphia is that iceberg and you haven't equipped this team with enough able bodied help to stay afloat !

Pitiful, absolutely pitiful. That's the 1st time in many years I saw a Phillies team give up on a game. It was painfully obvious, especially Howard and his half witted attempt at a swinging 3rd strike. I know it's only 4 games but before you know it they will be saying it's only 30 games and after that it's only 40 games. See where I'm going. Something needs to be done before we get to 30 games playing like this and one of the 1st things is to get rid of Charlie. Definitely time for a change of managers. They stopped listening to him a year ago.. Lets go RYNO -- bring some enthusiasm back to this bunch of sleepers.

Sorry I couldn't resist. When somebody says "Royals ... really ?" The Royals won 21 games last year against AL playoff teams.

For those of you who don't watch baseball, here's some fun stats.

BJ Upton is now 0-14 with 9 Ks
Tim Lincecum threw 5 innings, walked 7 batters and barely threw 89 mph in the 5th
Dan Haren and the Nats middle relievers got smoked tonight
      Jayson Werth is batting .125
Joe Blanton and Vance Worley are both 0-1
CC Sabbathia gave up 8 hits and walked 4 in 5 innings
      Albert Pujols is 1-14
      Josh Hamilton 1-16
      Adam LaRoche 0-13

The Nationals are 3-1 on the season, tied for the best record in baseball, while the Phillies are 1-3, tied for the worst record in baseball.

Until yesterday, Nationals pitchers had surrendered one run in three games. Phillies pitchers have surrendered the most runs in baseball.

Charlie is running this club like his personal little league. He wants to "give guys chances" and have them "work out their stuff". Every game is important and needs to be played to win. He is ready to retire and is just having too much fun to do it, at everyone else's expense. There are no excuses this year, everyone is healthy. This is just poor management.

How about the Iron Pigs? Lost 14-6 last night, 11-0 tonight. Tommy Joseph the great catching prospect 1-8, 3ks, GIDP, 4 Passed Balls, his pitchers have given up 17earned runs. The future looking dim....Maybe we should not be so negative this early but man it's depressing.

Why is it that almost 2-1 as many posts when Phils lose as when they win ? Answer ... trolls.

      Five thoughts
1- How long can the Revere experiment go on ? I like the kid. But we're asking him to be our starting centerfielder and our leadoff guy. That's a lot to put on a 24 year old. I think he can be a leadoff guy someday. Just not today.

2- Michael Young has batted 2nd for like 90% of his career. Whatever he is at this stage of his career. He is NOT a 5 hitter. He's a perfect 2 because he's a natural right field hitter. Plus, right handed he can see the runner.

3- Not an excuse, but April is a funny month. All the wacky things that happen in baseball mostly happen in April. Or so it seems. No-hitters, 25 run games, records , etc. Unfortunately there are 26 days left in April.

4- The BABIP for opposing teams vs Phils so far in the three losses is .413. It seems like every other ball in play ends up being a hit.

5- Washington and Dan Haren lost 15-0 tonight. Explain that to me.

Here's the Revere/Michael Young dilemma: The best way to take advantage of Revere's speed is to bat him at or near the top. With Rollins having speed as well but having more power and being able to bat from either side the current order makes sense: Rollins can move Revere along and also split the LH bats up a bit at the top. Revere has no power to move Rollins along if you reverse the order and Revere is going to be more of a distraction than Rollins if he gets on first -- Revere's speed should help Rollins see more fastballs. Meanwhile Young is, so far, showing he's the Young of 2012 and not earlier years. Lots of weak pop-outs and ground-out. He's a double play waiting to happen. Add to that the fact that moving him up leaves Howard with no RH bat at all behind him. And moving him up means someone moves down. Most people would move Rollins down just because they dislike Rollins. But then you've split the Rollins/Revere speed up and probably put Rollins in a less effective spot. Rollins is, after all, hitting well so far (Utley, Brown, Rollins being the top 3 Phillies I believe). No way do you move Utley down for Young.

In my opinion, Frandsen and even Galvis should be getting some at-bats. Frandsen's RH contact could really help I think. At the current rate Charlie's using those two Frandsen will get about 50 PA's for the year and Galvis will get about 100. So Charlies has started off doing nothing he said he would. Of course it's only three games so we really don't have a read on that yet. It just feels like Charlie will pencil Young in every day for a month even if he's hitting under .100. Young currently has the lowest average of any Phillie who's started all games.

That said, you could bat the pitcher 8th, Revere 9th, then: Rollins, Utley, Young, Howard, (some RH bat). You start the game with traditional Rollins lead-off power then have Revere/Rollins the rest of the game.

Mayberry is actually hitting well (.286). He could work behind Howard but he's not playing every game. I'm not so sure I wouldn't just put Brown 5th. So far, LH/RH doesn't seem to matter to him. With some batters (but not Howard) the LH/RH thing is overplayed.

KK was getting hit hard in the 5th, Charlie should've had a tighter leash on him going into the 6th. What I don't understand is Charlie picking the absolute worst guys from our bullpen? Consistently? Durbin was by far the worst pitcher at spring training yet he gets picked to go in, why? Horst gave up the 3run triple, should've been pulled immediately. This team looks below average at BEST. It is unacceptable that we have these low rent minor league guys when the fans give so much money to this organization. There is no excuse!!!

Dom Brown looked like the same old, can't-field guy. You just cannot make that mistake there, he had no shot at catching that ball and it goes to the wall. And looking at Durbin, it's hard not to agree RAJ seems to sign guys based on what they used to be able to do. I saw a guy who wasn't breaking 90 mph and it's no revelation that a good pitcher who loses a foot off his fastball isn't long for this world in MLB.

How many times over the last few years have we seen the Phillies gave KK a lead but he always seems to blow it. Give him one run, he will give up two, give him four and he will give up five.

      1. So tired of hearing "Stanford education" for Rube. He played baseball there, he never earned his admission. Was he a scholar, he doesn't believe in advanced statistics!!!
      2. Cholly needs to stop thinking it was his "instincts" that won it in 2008. He had a team destined to win. He is good at being the anti-Bowa, keeping everything lighthearted. Players don't like playing for him, they play for themselves and were at the top of their game, and Cholly conveniently stayed out of the way in 2008.
      3. Cholly shortened Halladay and Lee's careers by having them pitch unnecessarily in 8th and 9th innings the past two years. Fact is, there's more science and stress in the game today than back when Satchell Paige was pitching to nobodies. Don't strain arms unnecessarily Cholly.
      4. Mick Billmeyer, looks like a cretan out there. If anything, we need someone with intelligence watching over Charlie, not another fat idiot that doens't know the game, and is getting kicks out of being Cholly's yes-man. He's way too comfortable in that dugout for a guy thats in his first year there.
      5. The Phillies have the worst Middle Relief in baseball. Its embarassing that we have nobody besides Aumont (who can't throw strikes) who can throw heat.
      6. I was as optimistic as they come before this season started. I honestly think this team is too old to give you 9 solid innings. I don't think the team put on cruise control, I think they're old and have weak legs by the end of the game.
      7. I'll stop here, but finally, your team was already late getting to Philly while the Royals were chillin in Philly. Why go through that stupid parade before the game, when guys should be stretching and focused on the game...we're having a parade without winning anything!

I could care less about one loss if the team was good, but it isn't. I would agree the infield is probably the best part of the team which goes to show how mediocre it is.

The way this team is playing it might not finish ahead of the Marlins. Amaro getting back Durbin tells me enough about him as a GM. You spend $160 million and this team is playing like a team worth 40 million. Other than Lee and Hamels the starting pitching stinks. Adams and Papelbon are good relievers but we may never get to them because of middle relief. Nats will be 15 to 20 games better than the Phils.

Papelbon and Adams are legit pros. Durban, Horst, Valdes have no business being on an MLB roster. Nix should be a last resort player not a platoon starter. $6,600,000 in pitching talent on display by the Phillies today and they give up 14 runs. Good job Rube. How bout those bats? One runner (Mayberry walked as a pinch hitter) after the 4th inning. As Tony Bruno would say, it's an "outrage."

I was down in Clearwater a couple weeks ago & this team looked awful then.

Of course, those games didn't count and the prevailing theme was this team would be better when the games start to count.

After 4 games into this new season, the starting rotation has been lambasted daily & annihilated in 3 of the 4 games. How did Cliff Lee manage to survive this onslaught.

We may have to wait til Cliff pitches again for the team's next quality start.

After watching today's middle relief get "cooked", I guess watching Chad Qualls last year wasn't so bad afterall! Yikes!

Look, I'm no Uncle Buck fan or apologist, but this is Amaro's fault. Who else can he start besides Kendrick and tomorrow it will be worse with Lannan. The infield is ancient, and the OF is only better than the Mets, Cubs and SD...and it could be argued it's the worst in the NL. How did it get to this with a huge payroll? Easy, Amaro is a stone cold moron. He has yet to find a decent young player despite all his Rule 5 grabs The Phils are an injury or two away from being one of the worst teams in the NL which is a pretty good indication they aren't going to compete for a playoff spot. I can not believe we are only five years removed from winning the World Series, and two years removed from being a big favorite in the playoffs. Well played Amaro.

I don't get why Kendrick was pulled. Ask him to load the bases and then bring in a mediocre reliever? Nutty. If he is going to be charged with the runs he should be pitching the rest of the inning. This is not the world series. It is obvious that middle relief is anything but. Bring up the kids.

Kokie and Argonne: Don't bash Kendrick for this one. He gave 4 good innings in the 3rd game of the season. The 5th inning was not all that bad, though he gave up 2 runs. In the 5th, he gives up 2 hits...OK, he's obviously out of gas, but is leading 4-2. Not real surprising since it is early and is his first appearance of the year. What does Charlie do? He has Kyle intentionally walk the bases loaded then lifts him for Horst!! What happens is that Horst gives up a 3-run triple that makes Kendrick the loser. Way to protect your pitchers, Charlie!!! After that, the wheels come off, but that is not surprising since they have no relief pitching until you get to the 8th inning...if then!!! Who in the h#ll wants to play for a manager and/or pitching coach who does not feel it is important to "protect" his starters from disaster whenever it is possible? I am not usually a Charlie basher, but I do believe he engineered this loss for Kendrick, who did not give all that bad an effort through 5 innings!!!

shortly after my bar mitzvah, a guy pitching for the phillies started 18 games following the all-star break, one every fourth day, completed all 18 and won 17 of them. what if we pitch lee every fourth day, keep him in there seven innings no matter what. do this for a month. next month, every third day; next, every other day, then just give him the ball. oh, on the days he doesn't pitch, play him in right.

The offense is mediocre too. Only Lee's great pitching keeps us from being 0-4. 13 runs in 4 games = 3.25 runs average per game. So, no runs, no middle relief, and feeble starters are making for a very long season. Maybe the Phils need a dedicated bullpen pitching coach. The current system isn't working.

Wow ... that was big time ugly. You could see Kendrick lost it in the 5th. Once he leaves the 5th with the Phils ahead 4-2, that's the time to try Durbin -- not after Kendrick has loaded the bases. Talk about setting a guy up for failure ... Durbin isn't a strikeout guy by any stretch of the imagination. A key play was Rollins bobbling a ball that would have been an out. KK depends on defense and gets rattled when things go south so it was all downhill from there. Dom Brown looked good early at the plate but, man was his defense ever exposed. Nix continues to be mostly useless. Michael Young, so far, has lived down to all the expectations based on his recent past: Shaky defense, weak hitting into pop-ups or double-plays. Meanwhile Frandsen has 1 PA and Galvis is barely used. With two infield bench guys and a sinking ship Charlie chooses to listen to the band play as the ship goes under.

One for for Phils ownership: Accountability. Huge payroll, crappy results should equal someone getting fired. Plus it doesnt take a genius to realize the future isnt bright with an aging, fat 1b as the "anchor" of your lineup. The Phils are going to need to get extremely lucky with other teams cast offs or they are going to be below average for years. Accountability, I know it isnt popular anymore, but it is long overdue.

That was painful. The biggest problem I had is Manuel is lazy and he stuck with Horst too long. He had a bad inning. Get him out! Don't let him start another inning. Especially early in the season when you don't really know what you have yet. But Manuel does that all the time. Brown with that dumb play didn't help but the game was probably over at that point.

I know it's very, very, very early but something that irked me for years is, just like in Basketball you can't teach height, in baseball you can't teach 97mph fastball. Either you have the arm or not. You can work on a guy's control, on different pitches but you can't teach velocity. Armaro should just keep drafting hard throwers, enough of these guys who have to nibble and be perfect or they get killed. You can make a mistake with a 96mph fastball, but not a 90mph one.

Phillies Play by Play shill Tom McCarthy stresses the grass grabbed Nix's throw and caused the ball to slow. 'O did you see how the grass grabbed that ball>?" The very short fly ball to left that pudgy Nix caught in stride landed from his throwing arm in the middle of the infield, and bounced 3.5 times to the cacher. His throw was about 45 yards, or less than 150....from a running start. The runner scored laughing. But here is McCarthy, "wow, did you see how the grass held that ball up; the grass really grabbed it." and on and on from THE HUMAN CORPORATE COMMERCIAL, tom mccarthy. Today we only got to the 5th inning and then we brought in the Chad Qualls impersonators. Why do we still have Nix? For the last two years I have been trying to see what he brings to the table. drhoffman...No! Not you too! It is only game 4.

Anyways, I guess for those that don't think this team is going anywhere, they feel 3 of the first 4 games are vindication, but I still think this team has the talent to make it the playoffs.

The real question marks I have for right now is the BP (duh), Michael Young (because of last year and his fielding) and I have to admit, Charlie's use of the bullpen. I would of left KK in there in the 5th...and that wasn't hindsight. I thought he could've pitched his way out of that. Oh well.

But in my opinion -- and I'm not looking for a debate -- I'll give it a month to come to a conclusion as to whether or not this team is done. As of right now, I say no. I think the bats will heat up & the SP will even itself out. We'll see.

How does Amaro keep getting a pass? The Phils have 4 20 million plus players and a couple making well over 10 a year yet they are marginal at best. Amaro's "big" acquisition this year is essentially a Juan Pierre clone and a 100 year old 3B who is 3 years removed from being productive. He somehow concluded that two journeymen and a big ? mark in Halladay would make a good 5 man rotation. LA is practically begging to get rid of Lilly, Capuano and Harang. All three would be 1 year rentals and they couldnt get 1 to strengthen the rotation a little?

Certainly not good enough to compete with Wash and Atlanta, what is the plan? Build around an unknown like Brown? Ditch some more salary in Halladay and Utley then do what? The core of this team is old and less effective every year and there arent any young players to build a future around. Honestly if Amaro doesnt get fired for assembling this then Phils ownership is dumber than dirt.

The Phils were done in by the grass, according to the HUMAN COMMERCIAL, tom mccarthy. to see this human commercial get to do the play by play, mr corporate philly, is embarrasing for a major city. Ok, here we go: 7th inning, bases loaded, KC hitters puts a short low liner to the double A player Nix in right field, who catches it in stride and throws a three hopper, almost a 4 hopper to the catcher. Ball landed first behind the pitcher's mound. McCarthy, THE HUMAN CORPORATE PHILLIES COMMERCIAL, "oh did you see the grass grab that ball. the grass really was something; it died in the grass as soon as it hit," etc...even Chris the Homer Weeler had to stop THE HUMAN COMMERCIAL. ...real quality play by play guy. I had to laugh at Gary Matthews today. In the 4th inning, with the Phils up all of 4 - 0, he says, "these are the kinds of teams that when you beat them in the first game of the series, you have to start looking for the sweep. The Phils need that killer instinct."

How absurd to be looking ahead through the weekend when up by all of four runs early in game 1, against a terrific offensive team such as the Royals, but that's Sarge for ya. Just part of the worst TV Broadcast team ever assembled.

Ouch...let the Ruben bashing begin. Another year of "Inconsistent Kyle", a bullpen full of retreads and a manager who has always pushed all the wrong buttons. All of the aforementioned spoiled an otherwise grand day. Hungry young aggressive players...see Atlanta and now Kansas City...can make complacent aging veterans look really bad and don't look to the Iron Pigs for help...Cloyd got rocked last night giving up 7 runs and the other prime pitching prospect...Pettibone...has already allowed 5 runs in the first 2 innings tonight.

Charlie is not off to a good start this year managing the bullpen. Dear Lord. That was the most difficult to watch game I've seen in at least a year, and it's hard not to blame the manager. The offense completely took their foot off the pedal and were just fine waltzing to the finish line. I don't know if Kendrick should have stayed in or not, but I sure know Durbin sucked the moment we signed him. Horst? Really?

Charlie's laid back attitude isn't good enough, and the argument that a team of veterans should be able to motivate themselves doesn't work with this crew. Chase doesn't talk, Howard can't lead by example, and Rollins doesn't even run out ground balls; these aren't the guys to light their own fire.

As for Rube, I mean this is what the pessimists have been saying all off season. You were cheap, made ineffective moves, and now we're getting burned. It's still early in the season, but Doc looks cooked, we'll likely never make it to Adams and Pap, and our offense can't hit guys in.

Where have I seen this game before? Phils get up on top in the early innings, show some pop on offense, drive the opposing starter from the game and then completely shut it down.

On the flip side, the opposing team chips away, closes the deficit, eventually gets to our starter and forces the Phils to go to the 'pen as well.

Upon which the garbage that Amaro assembles every single season to pitch in the middle innings gets torched, while the opposition not only holds the Phils scoreless, they hold them hitless as well.

In the past 2- 3 seasons, this has happened 50 times or more. Somehow, the Giants and Nats and Cards and Braves and, yes, even the Royals, stockpile guys manning the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th slots on their staff, the guys paid to keep bad games close, and these guys do a great job while Amaro believes he can just fill out his staff with retreads, has-beens and never-weres, and the results of this ridiculous philosophy show almost every single time.

So, I'm waiting to read how the AA Club (Amaro Apologists) defend this one. Let me guess..."you can't have an All-Star at every position", right? See, I already know what's coming.

Only Smug Ruben can't figure out how to spend $180MM and actually have a 25-man club. The hallmark of the Amaro Phils is that they have at all times between 4 and 8 guys not ready to play major league baseball. $180MM doesn't go as far as it used to, I guess. This year is no different.

Bargain-basement pick-ups every single year to man the middle innings because he simply doesn't value that part of the game as other GM's do. The man is a disaster!
