The ball skipped underneath Domonic Brown's outstretched glove, rolled to the wall, and a collective groan christened Citizens Bank Park. Four Kansas City Royals scampered around the bases. When they stopped, gobs of Phillies fans departed before the seventh-inning stretch.

"Once the ball gets behind you," Charlie Manuel said, "the game is just about over."

Baseball returned Friday to South Philadelphia, and the scene was so reminiscent of last season's mediocrity. The result: A 13-4 loss to Kansas City, one marred by a withering offense and feeble bullpen.

No opponent scored more runs against the Phillies in their home opener since 1932, when the New York Giants won, 14-5, at the Baker Bowl, which was demolished 63 years ago. The nine-run defeat was the most lopsided in a home opener since an 11-0 loss to St. Louis in 1990.

A flurry of offense Friday boosted the Phillies to a 4-0 lead through three innings. The final six were ugly. In the ninth, with their team trailing by nine, the scattered remaining Phillies fans waved their white towels. Once Kratz flied to right for the 27th out, sarcasm ceded to disappointment.

"You don't want to lose your opener like that," Ryan Howard said.

The Royals scored 11 runs after the fifth inning. They battered a Phillies bullpen that was advertised in spring training as improved. The same disturbing trends from 2012 persisted.

Phillies relievers inherited six runners, and all six scored. Manuel intentionally loaded the bases in the sixth inning by walking pinch-hitter Billy Butler for the lefty-lefty matchup between Alex Gordon and Jeremy Horst. Starter Kyle Kendrick said he wanted the chance to finish the inning.

"Butler is their best hitter," Manuel said. "He's the guy I wasn't going to let beat us today."

Gordon rocked an 88 m.p.h. Horst fastball to the gap in right-center for a three-run triple. That initiated the first boos of 2013.

Horst stayed for the seventh. He walked the leadoff batter and allowed two grounders that found holes. It created another bases-loaded jam for new pitcher Chad Durbin. The veteran righty permitted a sacrifice fly, a walk, and yet another three-run triple (this one by light-hitting second baseman Chris Getz).

It was a triple because Brown made a diving stab at the ball. At the very least, it was a single, and another run scored. Brown emerged empty-handed and, it was a back-breaking moment.

For Durbin, it represented another lackluster performance. He stumbled through spring training and his debut outing on opening day in Atlanta. Durbin is reprising his reputation as a slow starter.

Manuel said he wanted Durbin pitching in that situation because of his experience and reputation.

"It's usually not this bad of a start," Durbin said. "I felt good. That doesn't matter. It's a results-based league."

This day began with promise. Ten pitches into the game, the Phillies had three hits and a lead. Brown and Kratz blasted home runs off Royals starter Wade Davis.

The Phillies did not manage a hit after the third inning. Kansas City's anonymous relief corps - Bruce Chen, J.C. Gutierrez, Tim Collins and Luke Hochevar - tossed five scoreless innings and struck out six.

Meanwhile, the soft underbelly of the Phillies' bullpen was just that. Horst was a serviceable piece in 2012 but did not complete his job Friday. Durbin was signed for $1.1 million to add stability in the middle innings. All Raul Valdes did in spring training was throw strikes. He contributed his second forgettable outing of the young season, raising his ERA to 14.73 in the process.

A fan base that so often witnessed bullpen malaise last season expressed its displeasure.

"They let us know," Durbin said. "The anxiety, you hear it. You either thrive on it or don't. Four games in, I don't think it's that big a deal."

Charlie better get in the habit of leaving the starters in the game until their arms fall off. Hopefully, if Adams is any good we only nned to get to the 8th inning. Today we only got to the 5th inning and then we brought in the Chad Qualls impersonators. Why do we still have Nix? For the last two years I have been trying to see what he brings to the table. Will someone please tell me. I hope the Phillies are not as bad as they looked today.

Phillies Play by Play shill Tom McCarthy stresses the grass grabbed Nix's throw and caused the ball to slow. 'O did you see how the grass grabbed that ball>?" The very short fly ball to left that pudgy Nix caught in stride landed from his throwing arm in the middle of the infield, and bounced 3.5 times to the cacher. His throw was about 45 yards, or less than 150....from a running start. The runner scored laughing. But here is McCarthy, "wow, did you see how the grass held that ball up; the grass really grabbed it." and on and on from THE HUMAN CORPORATE COMMERCIAL, tom mccarthy. Hey guys, we get another awful year of this lowish IQ corporate huckster. the human commercial, tom mccarthy.

I know it's very, very, very early but something that irked me for years is, just like in Basketball you can't teach height, in baseball you can't teach 97mph fastball. Either you have the arm or not. You can work on a guy's control, on different pitches but you can't teach velocity. Armaro should just keep drafting hard throwers, enough of these guys who have to nibble and be perfect or they get killed. You can make a mistake with a 96mph fastball, but not a 90mph one.

That was painful. The biggest problem I had is Manuel is lazy and he stuck with Horst too long. He had a bad inning. Get him out! Don't let him start another inning. Especially early in the season when you don't really know what you have yet. But Manuel does that all the time. Brown with that dumb play didn't help but the game was probably over at that point.

Perhaps the question should be: "Which Phillies starter will LOSE the most games. Frankly, I am deeply concerned about this team - overall - starting pitching, very suspect; hitters, potential but can anyone step up LARGE?; bench - so so; outfield, please heal quickly Delmon!!!! This season can be a very big let down. Guys need to step up NOW.

One for for Phils ownership: Accountability. Huge payroll, crappy results should equal someone getting fired. Plus it doesnt take a genius to realize the future isnt bright with an aging, fat 1b as the "anchor" of your lineup. The Phils are going to need to get extremely lucky with other teams cast offs or they are going to be below average for years. Accountability, I know it isnt popular anymore, but it is long overdue.

deanmartin: That was funny when McCarthy blamed Nix's throw on the grass. Not only was it 50 feet too short but it was 20 feet offline.

I never thought it would happen, but Charlie may get fired mid-season. They can't just let things slide like this.

Wow ... that was big time ugly. You could see Kendrick lost it in the 5th. Once he leaves the 5th with the Phils ahead 4-2, that's the time to try Durbin -- not after Kendrick has loaded the bases. Talk about setting a guy up for failure ... Durbin isn't a strikeout guy by any stretch of the imagination. A key play was Rollins bobbling a ball that would have been an out. KK depends on defense and gets rattled when things go south so it was all downhill from there. Dom Brown looked good early at the plate but, man was his defense ever exposed. Nix continues to be mostly useless. Michael Young, so far, has lived down to all the expectations based on his recent past: Shaky defense, weak hitting into pop-ups or double-plays. Meanwhile Frandsen has 1 PA and Galvis is barely used. With two infield bench guys and a sinking ship Charlie chooses to listen to the band play as the ship goes under.

The offense is mediocre too. Only Lee's great pitching keeps us from being 0-4. 13 runs in 4 games = 3.25 runs average per game. So, no runs, no middle relief, and feeble starters are making for a very long season. Maybe the Phils need a dedicated bullpen pitching coach. The current system isn't working.

shortly after my bar mitzvah, a guy pitching for the phillies started 18 games following the all-star break, one every fourth day, completed all 18 and won 17 of them. what if we pitch lee every fourth day, keep him in there seven innings no matter what. do this for a month. next month, every third day; next, every other day, then just give him the ball. oh, on the days he doesn't pitch, play him in right.
