The ball skipped underneath Domonic Brown's outstretched glove, rolled to the wall, and a collective groan christened Citizens Bank Park. Four Kansas City Royals scampered around the bases. When they stopped, gobs of Phillies fans departed before the seventh-inning stretch.

"Once the ball gets behind you," Charlie Manuel said, "the game is just about over."

Baseball returned Friday to South Philadelphia, and the scene was so reminiscent of last season's mediocrity. The result: A 13-4 loss to Kansas City, one marred by a withering offense and feeble bullpen.

No opponent scored more runs against the Phillies in their home opener since 1932, when the New York Giants won, 14-5, at the Baker Bowl, which was demolished 63 years ago. The nine-run defeat was the most lopsided in a home opener since an 11-0 loss to St. Louis in 1990.

A flurry of offense Friday boosted the Phillies to a 4-0 lead through three innings. The final six were ugly. In the ninth, with their team trailing by nine, the scattered remaining Phillies fans waved their white towels. Once Kratz flied to right for the 27th out, sarcasm ceded to disappointment.

"You don't want to lose your opener like that," Ryan Howard said.

The Royals scored 11 runs after the fifth inning. They battered a Phillies bullpen that was advertised in spring training as improved. The same disturbing trends from 2012 persisted.

Phillies relievers inherited six runners, and all six scored. Manuel intentionally loaded the bases in the sixth inning by walking pinch-hitter Billy Butler for the lefty-lefty matchup between Alex Gordon and Jeremy Horst. Starter Kyle Kendrick said he wanted the chance to finish the inning.

"Butler is their best hitter," Manuel said. "He's the guy I wasn't going to let beat us today."

Gordon rocked an 88 m.p.h. Horst fastball to the gap in right-center for a three-run triple. That initiated the first boos of 2013.

Horst stayed for the seventh. He walked the leadoff batter and allowed two grounders that found holes. It created another bases-loaded jam for new pitcher Chad Durbin. The veteran righty permitted a sacrifice fly, a walk, and yet another three-run triple (this one by light-hitting second baseman Chris Getz).

It was a triple because Brown made a diving stab at the ball. At the very least, it was a single, and another run scored. Brown emerged empty-handed and, it was a back-breaking moment.

For Durbin, it represented another lackluster performance. He stumbled through spring training and his debut outing on opening day in Atlanta. Durbin is reprising his reputation as a slow starter.

Manuel said he wanted Durbin pitching in that situation because of his experience and reputation.

"It's usually not this bad of a start," Durbin said. "I felt good. That doesn't matter. It's a results-based league."

This day began with promise. Ten pitches into the game, the Phillies had three hits and a lead. Brown and Kratz blasted home runs off Royals starter Wade Davis.

The Phillies did not manage a hit after the third inning. Kansas City's anonymous relief corps - Bruce Chen, J.C. Gutierrez, Tim Collins and Luke Hochevar - tossed five scoreless innings and struck out six.

Meanwhile, the soft underbelly of the Phillies' bullpen was just that. Horst was a serviceable piece in 2012 but did not complete his job Friday. Durbin was signed for $1.1 million to add stability in the middle innings. All Raul Valdes did in spring training was throw strikes. He contributed his second forgettable outing of the young season, raising his ERA to 14.73 in the process.

A fan base that so often witnessed bullpen malaise last season expressed its displeasure.

"They let us know," Durbin said. "The anxiety, you hear it. You either thrive on it or don't. Four games in, I don't think it's that big a deal."

The Phils were done in by the grass, according to the HUMAN COMMERCIAL, tom mccarthy. to see this human commercial get to do the play by play, mr corporate philly, is embarrasing for a major city. Ok, here we go: 7th inning, bases loaded, KC hitters puts a short low liner to the double A player Nix in right field, who catches it in stride and throws a three hopper, almost a 4 hopper to the catcher. Ball landed first behind the pitcher's mound. McCarthy, THE HUMAN CORPORATE PHILLIES COMMERCIAL, "oh did you see the grass grab that ball. the grass really was something; it died in the grass as soon as it hit," etc...even Chris the Homer Weeler had to stop THE HUMAN COMMERCIAL. ...real quality play by play guy. But any phillies fan knows this.

I never understood the reason for bringing Durbin back. He wasn't that good the first time he was here. Kudos to the fans for their sarcastic towel wave in the 9th! Excellent way to tell management what they thought of the opening day performance. Good thing this was only one game out of 162, although it's obvious that middle relief is going to be a problem.

After suffering through last season, how very disheartening to watch the "improved" bullpen blow this game. Did this team really have the best record in baseball in 2011? It seems like a decade ago.

In their last two games at Citizens Bank Park, including the spring training game versus Toronto on March 30, Phillies pitchers have now surrendered 23 runs on 33 hits.

Rube,KK,Lannan,Bullpen-Pap/Adams,age,deterioting core will have this team about 17 1/2 games behind Washington again this year.

My only request before this years July trade deadline sell off, clean house in the front office first. Think Rube and Co's run has come to an end. I think Rube did a nice job up until the 2011/2012 offseason. Its been a train derailment ever since.

I knew they would get burnt giving up on Chen. Don't forget, teams are licking their chops when they see the Phillies on the schedule, especially their pitching staffs.

How does Amaro keep getting a pass? The Phils have 4 20 million plus players and a couple making well over 10 a year yet they are marginal at best. Amaro's "big" acquisition this year is essentially a Juan Pierre clone and a 100 year old 3B who is 3 years removed from being productive. He somehow concluded that two journeymen and a big ? mark in Halladay would make a good 5 man rotation. LA is practically begging to get rid of Lilly, Capuano and Harang. All three would be 1 year rentals and they couldnt get 1 to strengthen the rotation a little?

Certainly not good enough to compete with Wash and Atlanta, what is the plan? Build around an unknown like Brown? Ditch some more salary in Halladay and Utley then do what? The core of this team is old and less effective every year and there arent any young players to build a future around. Honestly if Amaro doesnt get fired for assembling this then Phils ownership is dumber than dirt.

A man's got to know his limitations... Ruben's NOT a GM, Charlie's NOT a manager, Kendrick is NOT a 6 inning pitcher, Durbin is NOT a major league reliever...enough said.

Up 4-2 after 4...and POW. Time for Durbin/Valdez to be shipped out NOW. Durbin has that great 27.00 era. I obviously have been drinking of the kool-aid far too long. Four games in (1-3) giving up 27 runs in 4 games including a shut out by Lee.....Oy Vey...this ship is sinking faster than the Titanic. Yeah, I have begun to panic. Sign Carlos Zambrano, move KK to the long spot he belongs in, and dump Valdez. NOW!

drhoffman...No! Not you too! It is only game 4.

Anyways, I guess for those that don't think this team is going anywhere, they feel 3 of the first 4 games are vindication, but I still think this team has the talent to make it the playoffs.

The real question marks I have for right now is the BP (duh), Michael Young (because of last year and his fielding) and I have to admit, Charlie's use of the bullpen. I would of left KK in there in the 5th...and that wasn't hindsight. I thought he could've pitched his way out of that. Oh well.

But in my opinion -- and I'm not looking for a debate -- I'll give it a month to come to a conclusion as to whether or not this team is done. As of right now, I say no. I think the bats will heat up & the SP will even itself out. We'll see.

Kendrick is a POS. The attitude when he talks, the looks he gives Charlie for taking him out of the game, one good game a season. Yea this guy is worth 3.5 million a year. Rube has to go! His judgement of needs and talent is incomprehensible.
