The Eagles' search for their next general manager has focused on "four or five" candidates, and a new hire could be made within 36 hours, a league source said last night.

Howie Roseman, the Eagles' vice president of player personnel, was the only candidate identified by the source, and it is believed that he remains the leading candidate to replace Tom Heckert, who was hired as the Cleveland Browns' general manager Monday.

The source said the Eagles have interviewed a minority candidate as required by the NFL's Rooney Rule, but declined to identify the candidate.

Louis Riddick, the Eagles' assistant director of pro personnel, is the highest-ranking minority in the Eagles' scouting department. Riddick, a Quakertown native who played seven years in the NFL as a safety, joined the Eagles' personnel staff in 2008 after spending seven seasons with the Washington Redskins' personnel staff.

Other potential candidates from within the organization are director of college scouting Ryan Grigson and director of pro personnel Jon Sandusky. Grigson has been with the team for six seasons. Sandusky, the son of former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, just finished his ninth season with the Eagles.

The league source indicated that if a new GM is not hired by the end of today, the process could drag on for a couple of weeks. Coach Andy Reid and team president Joe Banner will be on vacation next week, then will travel to the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., the following week.

Another McDermott in nest. Tim McDermott, the brother of Eagles defensive coordinator Sean, has been named the team's senior vice president and chief marketing officer. The role had been vacant since Mark Donovan left for the Kansas City Chiefs over the summer.

McDermott had spent the last four years working with the same title for the the NHL's Washington Capitals.
