College Basketball: St. Joseph's women win first at new arena
St. Joseph's used members from its first-ever women's basketball team of the past (1972-74) to toss the opening tip, and then the present-day Hawks went on to beat Maryland-Baltimore County, 77-55, yesterday as competition began in their new Michael J. Hagan Arena.
Carlee Cassidy and Katie Brooks each scored 12 points for the Retrievers (1-2).
Xavier 59, Arizona State 46 - Former Springside star Katie Rutan made three consecutive three-pointers during a first-half run that put the ninth-ranked Musketeers (2-0) ahead to stay, and had a steal and layup that ended a comeback by the No. 14 Sun Devils (2-1) in Cincinnati.
Xavier never trailed after Rutan came off the bench to lead a 13-point run. The freshman from Ambler took quick shots without hesitation. "I'll never be shy. I just launch them," Rutan said.
LSU 72, Houston 54 - Freshman guard Adrienne Webb came off the bench to score 17 points, hit three of four 3-point shots, as the No. 7 Tigers (3-0) beat the Cougars (3-1) in Baton Rouge, La.
Oklahoma 74, Texas Christian 70 - Abi Olajuwon, the daughter of former NBA player Hakeem Olajuwon, scored 23 points to lead the No. 20 Sooners (2-1) over the Horned Frogs (2-1) in Norman, Okla.
Middle Tennessee 84, Austin Peay 73 - Alysha Clark scored 38 points to lead the No. 24 Blue Raiders (2-1) to a vitory over the Lady Governors (1-2) in Clarksville, Tenn.
Elsewhere: Shaqwedia Wallace scored 11 points, while Kristen McCarthy had 10 points and 11 rebounds as Temple (4-0) stayed unbeaten, with a 65-55 win over host Buffalo (1-2). . . . Elena Delle Donne had 35 points and 10 rebounds, but Delaware (1-1) fell to host Princeton (3-0), 68-59. . . . La Salle's Morgan Robertson scored 12 points, but the Explorers (1-3) shot a lowly 21.7 percent from the floor against host Tulsa (2-0) in a 62-39 loss. . . Duke 104, Radford 67 - Freshman Andre Dawkins scored 20 points as the No. 9 Blue Devils (4-0) hit a school record 18 three-pointers in a romp over the Highlanders (2-1) in Durham, N.C.
Butler 64, Evansville 60 - Shelvin Mack had 17 and Matt Howard had 10 points and 13 rebounds as the No. 11 Bulldogs (3-0) beat the Aces (2-1) in Evansville, Ind.
Georgetown 63, Savannah State 44 - Jason Clark scored a career-high 14 points and four Hoyas were in double figures as the No. 19 Hoyas (3-0) rolled past the overmatched Tigers (2-2) in Savannah, Ga.
Louisville 69, East Tennessee State 56 - Edgar Sosa scored 13 of his 16 points in the first half and, despite shooting just 36.4 percent, the No. 20 Cardinals (2-0) beat the Buccaneers (1-3) in Louisville, Ky.
Illinois 94, Presbyterian 48 - D.J. Richardson scored 15 points to help the No. 23 Illini (3-0) overcome a sluggish start against the zone defense to wallop the Blue Hose (0-3) in a Las Vegas Invitational game in Champaign, Ill.
Philadelphia University 68, Merrimack 64 - Malcolm Ingram scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Rams (3-2) celebrated coach Herb Magee's 50 years with the school at the Gallagher Athletic Center with an upset win over the Warriors (0-2).
West Chester 80, Wilmington 77 - Ralph Hegamin and Kehinde Roberts each poured in 25 points as the Golden Rams beat the Wildcats in New Castle, Del., in five overtimes.
