EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - When you stop and think about it, sports and the military have much in common.

The similarities struck 76ers coach Eddie Jordan yesterday - Veterans Day - as he sat in the visiting coach's office at the IZOD Center and watched an ESPN feature that posed the question: Who was the best Army coach? Was it basketball's Mike Krzyzewski or Bob Knight, or football assistant Bill Parcells?

Sixers' Elton Brand attempts to shoot over outstretched arm of Nets' Josh Boone.

The correct answer for those whose sense of history predates, well, ESPN, probably is the late, great Earl "Red" Blaik, who helped develop Heisman Trophy winners Doc Blanchard, Glenn Davis and Pete Dawkins for the Old Gray Line. But Jordan nonetheless was intrigued by the idea of how precision and tactics in the field can often overcome superior enemy forces.

"Those guys were about preparation and teamwork, not individual play," Jordan said of some of the better sports strategists ever to have passed through West Point.

Perhaps some day, if and when and if he has enough championship-caliber talent at his disposal, Jordan can simply overwhelm opponents with full-frontal assaults. Until then, the first-year Sixers floor leader can only hope to surprise the occasional NBA foe with a series of rear actions (he is partial to Princeton-style backdoor cuts), flanking maneuvers, diversionary tactics and subterfuge.

"If we play as a team," Jordan declared, "we'll win."

The Sixers did in fact beat the winless New Jersey Nets last night, 82-79, but how effectively they played as a team again is open to speculation. Struggling Elton Brand never left the bench in the fourth quarter for the fourth time in five games as Jordan apparently has reached a command decision, at least for now, that outcomes that hang in the balance are best determined by someone other than their highest-priced veteran.

At 4-4, Jordan's Sixers have not settled on an orderly rotation for the remainder of what could prove to be a seasonlong attempt to determine who fits into what role. But one truth does appear to be emerging from all that mixing and matching: Second-year big man Marreese Speights will be an integral part of the team's ultimate makeover, however drastic or slowly evolving that might be.

Speights, a 6-10 power forward who can play center as the need arises, is gobbling large chunks of the significant, clutch-time minutes that figured to go to Brand. He scored 19 points, eight of which came in the final period, including the decisive three-point play when he rebounded a Thaddeus Young miss and scored on the putback with 1 minute, 10 seconds remaining. He added a free throw to put the Sixers ahead for the final time at 80-79. Two free throws - one apiece by Samuel Dalembert and Young - increased the Philly advantage that stood up when New Jersey's Rafer Alston had a brain cramp and accidentally inbounded the ball to Young with 4.8 seconds left.

"He's just got great swag," Jordan said of Speights. "His confidence is soaring."

Speights wasn't about to disagree. He apparently enjoys being a go-to guy.

"I just want to go out there and play as hard as I can," said Speights, who added a team-high nine rebounds. "But if the ball comes to me, yeah, I'm going to try to score."

Swingman Jason Kapono said it should come as no surprise that Speights has come to the fore.

"He's a big guy that can shoot," Kapono said.

If Speights has a drawback, it's that his defense has yet to catch up with his offense. Then again, that has been a teamwide trend as players get used to Jordan's system.

"Our chemistry on defense is pretty good," Kapono noted. "On offense, we're still pretty stagnant for the most part."

If Brand hasn't lived up to his billing, the team's presumed leader, Andre Iguodala, also has had his share of off nights. Brand and Iguodala shot a combined 4-for-20, which might have been an obstacle too big to clear were it not for Young's early hot hand - he scored 16 of his team-high 20 points in the first half - and Speights' late heroics.

The Nets (0-8), who lost, 97-94, to the Sixers on Nov. 6 at the Wachovia Center, got another big game out of center Brook Lopez. He finished with game highs of 23 points and 14 rebounds, some of those coming against Speights, prompting Jordan to bring in Dalembert to guard him down the stretch.

Dalembert came up with the stop of the night when, immediately after Speights' three-point play, he crowded Lopez on a spin move to the basket. Lopez missed the in-close shot, Dalembert snagged the rebound and, as the West Point guys might have said, the battle was won.

"I always thought Sam was key for us," said Jordan of Dalembert's four blocked shots and eight rebounds in 24:39.

Meanwhile, the Nets - who were without the injured Devin Harris, Yi Jianlian and Courtney Lee - are wondering which key unlocks their door.

"It's tough, you're right there fighting tooth-and-nail to the finish and we haven't had the ability to pull one out," Alston said. "We're still looking for that victory to turn things around."

Six shots

Thaddeus Young, whose perimeter jump shot has been absent of late, was encouraged that his stroke was returning after he drained two of four three-pointers. "I've been working hard the past couple of weeks just trying to figure things out," he said. "It's close to coming back" . . . Guard Willie Green hit back-to-back jumpers in the fourth quarter. He finished with five points, but they were important . . . Jason Smith was the only Sixer to dress who did not play.

It's quite obvious the signing was a big mistake. Told You so. The Sixers will never put there 84 million dollar player on the bench where he belongs. I waited patiently for Billy King to leave. Unfortunately it's like he never left. Stiffasnky should be fired immediately. He should have been fired the day he walked in Snider's office and ask him to give Iggy and Brand 164 million. In one summer he became the worst GM in the league.

Brand looks like the basket support out there and is about as functional. Coach needs to unleash Jrue and see what the kid can do- his spotty minutes against Phoenix the other night were electrifying. Speights is a star in the making as is Thad. Brand is an albatross.

The signing of Brand was a bold move by Eddie, it just didn't work and now has become an expensive mistake. Eddie should be accountable for the way it turned out but I appreciate that he made a bold move, he tried. Thad is still really raw. Speights is a marvelous shooter who stands out because the rest of the team strugles so badly. The D is laying off Lou, he really needs to improve his shot. Jrue has some very natural instincts for a PG. He took a nothing play when he first came in and made it a nifty pick and roll with Brand who promptly missed the layup but was fouled.

Brand can't leap. He got stuffed by the rim last night on a relatively uncontested layup . . . I didn't pay him so I don't worry about his minutes. Keep him on the bench. I think his achilles might still be a little sore. Speights is for real right now. Otherwise, terrible win for the Sixers last night, considering that three of the Nets' best players were wearing suits instead of uniforms. Also, play Willie more. And make Rodney Carney pull down his socks for once.

Wow. I sat through the whole game. Abysmal! Even the positives look unimpressive. Is it me or do most of Young's shots look like they magically fell in? That boy is constantly falling backwards or sideways on ocntested shots. And the announcers (Zumoff and company)...talk about over-the-top silly. D. Marshall is about as close as you get to an honest assessment of the team, but you can see he's having to say uplifting things despite thinking otherwise. Looked like he was about to choke when asked if Brand looked like he could return to form! Speights, Holiday, to some extent Iggy, and one or two of the staduim food/beer stands are about the only things that give me any sense of hopefulness. The team and its managemnet---truly wretched!

Nothing but the truth
The young guys are really pulling their weight even in the limited minutes that they are receiving. If Speights played 30-35 minutes he would average 20-10 easy. Jrue looks to be a future star and Thad what can you say about Thad? Except it looks like Thad got his swagger back, so defenses better beware. Once this lineup is set and this offense starts to really click the only thing left is to count the days until the playoffs. Then it's fo', fo', fo' (add an extra fo and take out the fi)

Why not the kid from Atlanta who fit our collection of playground athletes? Rotations are awful if Smith gets to the perimeter best. IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE PLAYERS YOU BETTER HAVE THE COACH. Did anybody watch Thad dribble? He has to be a four. Thad, Brand, Speights, Smith are all four. Lou undersized two. Andre a four. Sammy a five "in progress". Miller was the only "Keeper".

Sammy was just ridiculous last night. Ridiculously bad. How many times did he bobble the ball on offensive boards, defensive boards and even on what looked like simple passes. It's hard to beleive that with Speights in the game at the end, Dalembert was a better option than Smith, Brand or even Brezec. Is Brezec really worse than Dalembert? At this point I'm just so sick of watching him drop passes and miss free throws that I just want to see someone else. And yes let's see more Jrue, Lou is just not a starter.

What was so dumb about the Brand signing is we already knew we had a running team. And we signed a guy coming off an achilles injury that was never quick or fast or big or anything. All Brand had in L.A was a foulline jumpshot. He's Chris Webber without the natural athleticism, length, or talent. He's ok. But just like Eddie Jordan so eloquently put it. Anybody can put up numbers when your team sucks. My problem with Ed as a Gm isnt so much he doesnt want to do a good job. Its that he's impulsive and obviously doesnt know what he is doing. If you have a running team what would you rather have. Josh Smith or Brand? If you have a half court walk it up team what would you rather have. Brand or Josh Smith. Ed was one of those kids that tried to force the Square peg into the star shape in kindergarden. He's not a basketball mind in New Jersey he was the Crispy Creme and coffee guy. Go get my newspaper and restock the copy machine with 8 1/2 x 11 guy. Brand is more of a liability than Dalembert is. At least Sam serves a purpose in his starting slot. When Brand is at powerforward the team is just slower. Play Speights and let Ed worry about Brand..Jordan. Maybe he can teach Elton how to make a good cup of coffee

Can't help but agree with Zeru77, after watching Brand last night in a game in which he should have starred, given the slow pace of the game and the fact that the lamentable Nets could not dare to foul, since they only had seven players. While the signing of Brand was a bold move as stated in another post, I honestly felt at the time that it was not a smart move, given the type of injury he was coming off and the fact that, as Jordan himself says, someone on bad teams must score and board and thus numbers on such teams may not be a true indicator of the player's skill set, and Brand clearly did not fit in with a young athletic team that loved to run. Right now, however, Jordan must continue to play him to see if their is any hope that he will make a positive enough contribution to unload him (not likely) or at the very least to demonstrate to Stefanski why he can't play Brand down the stretch of any games Stefanski was not wrong in trying to bring in a player and coach wedded to half-court offense, which you need in the NBA to win playoffs, as running teams are generally shut down at that time of the year. He simply brought in the wrong duo, just as Snider might have brought in the wrong GM.

Speights has the talent. He will have to improve his defense a lot though. Obviously if his match up against the better players leads to him scoring 18-20 but giving up 30 he will just end up another empty stat guy whose teams don't win.

I knew Stefanski was a fraud from day one every move he has made has gone wrong, From the coach to Brand to paying Iggy all of that money when all he had to do was wait. no other team would have sign him for that amount of money, Iggy is the basketball virgin of mcnabb.

I see Brand on the bench and I think of Butch Van Breda Kolff sitting Wilt Chamberlain in the playoffs with five fouls. How can the man possibly score or rebound from the bench? Stop it, already. (Although, I guess, given Wilt's reputation [10,000+], he could score from anywhere, depending on the definition of the verb.)

iggy the basketball virgin (and its spelled version) of mcnabb..i never seen iggy go to five all-star games to mcnabbs 5 pro bowls..o well..anyways..the sixers look real horrible. When i first learned of the Brand signing. I just shook my head like damn...they let josh smith walk who i thought better fit their system. Dalembert still cant score or stay out of foul trouble. I told everyone when they named eddie jordan head coach i said this team gonna be like his wizards team..all offense no defense and he got fired for a reason!! We all are seeing it now. Should of never run larry brown out of town..lol..least he put emphasis on defense and u saw where the sixers went. with this coach this team wont even make it to the playoffs..they wont even be in the running for the 8th seed spot..look for a lottery pick in the next draft for the sixers and a new coach hopefully a new GM this dude is an idiot. look like this gonna be a football and baseball town for awhile now. they sign brand to 84 million and iggy to 80 million..did they think about the free agents after the season thats gonna be available? Least the knicks r horrible, but got rid of their good and expensive players to make room for next years free agent pool...unlike the sixers. smh.
