Villa Joseph Marie moves on in girls soccer
Last year, Villa Joseph Marie lost to the city's District 12 champion, Archbishop Ryan, in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA state playoffs.
Tuesday night, the Jems proved they are not interested in reliving the past.
Sophomore midfielder Emily Market had a goal and an assist, dishing to fellow sophomore forward Becky Pfender for the game-winner, as Villa Joseph Marie defeated Archbishop Wood, 3-1, in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA state tournament at Southern.
Market, playing in her first varsity season, created the deciding goal on a streaking 40-yard run with 2 minutes, 38 seconds remaining in the first half, just when Archbishop Wood had begun to gain momentum.
Dominique Ponente had scored off an assist from Erica Petrone in the 19th minute to give Villa Joseph Marie a 1-0 lead.
In the 33d minute, Vikings junior midfielder Christine Verrelle hammered home a head ball off a Samantha Greenfield corner kick, tying the game at 1-1.
But five minutes later, Market flew down the left sideline, used a fancy touch-on from junior forward Meghan Ledwith to get behind the right defender, and then passed across the box to Pfender, who shot low to the right corner and gave the Jems the lead for good.
Market then scored an insurance goal off a pass from freshman midfielder Elizabeth Goldner in the 65th minute to seal the victory.
"Emily had a fantastic game," said Jems head coach Rich Finneyfrock, who substitutes often with only five seniors but a deep bench and a reserve of young talent. "We put the best players on. We're blessed with a lot of good players, but everyone works. It's a team game. We don't go to one person."
"They made the most of their opportunities. They scored when they had the chance, and we didn't," Archbishop Wood coach Bill Cappo said. "It was our first time here, so it was a good experience for us. But hopefully we'll do better and get here again next year."
"Every game we win, I tell the girls, 'Somewhere in the state of Pennsylvania, there's only eight teams left. There's only four teams left. There are only two teams practicing today in Pennsylvania,' " said Finneyfrock, whose team is the second seed from District 1.
Villa Joseph Marie next will play in the quarterfinals Saturday.
