Sixers battle but fall to Suns
The 76ers' lead drifted away slowly, setting like a sun.
With each Steve Nash assist, each Amar'e Stoudemire floater, each Jason Richardson trey, the home team's advantage became smaller and smaller until, at the final buzzer, the Phoenix Suns had won, 119-115.
Tonight at the Wachovia Center, the Sixers played their best basketball of the season. They led by as many as 16 points and were ahead by 66-54 at the half and 86-84 after three quarters.
The sequence on which this game pivoted came with 2 minutes, 30 seconds left. On what looked to be an easy fast break conversion, Sixers reserve Rodney Carney missed a contested layup. Teammate Thaddeus Young grabbed the rebound and overshot the putback.
Not five seconds later, Richardson dunked, with a foul, on the other end: His free throw gave the Suns a 111-108 lead.
Sixers point guard Lou Williams took - and missed - all three Sixers shots after Richardson's dunk until 49.5 seconds were left and the Suns were ahead by 113-108.
The Suns improved to 7-1; the Sixers fell below .500 at 3-4.
Nash finished with 20 assists - tying the entire Sixers team - and 21 points; Stoudemire scored 17. Richardson made six three-pointers and led all scorers with 29 points.
Andre Iguodala led the Sixers with 24 points, while backup center Marreese Speights scored 20.
To begin the game, the Sixers ran what appeared to be a designed play. Iguodala started with the ball just over halfcourt on the right and dribbled left, weaving with Williams. Williams dribbled hard to the right wing while Young ducked onto the right block. Williams gave it down low to Young, who lately has struggled with his jumper, his touch disappearing.
Young waited for Williams to clear out. Then Young went to that left hand - the one that has appeared smooth and true for just over two NBA seasons - dribbling into a little hook in the lane that floated into the basket, swirled around the rim, then popped out.
And maybe right then, with such a good-looking first play ending as a miss, it seemed it might be a long night for these Sixers against the electric Suns.
Through 24 minutes, it wasn't.
Iguodala finished the half 6 for 9 from the floor, scoring a team-high 12 points.
After a put-back bucket by Young, the Suns, trailing by 37-28, called a time-out with 8:54 left in the second quarter.
The Sixers pulled ahead with a lineup of Young, rookie Jrue Holiday, and reserves Willie Green, Jason Smith, and Speights.
A three-pointer by Holiday on the Sixers' next possession pushed their lead to 12. A few minutes later, Holiday made another three-pointer, making the lead 13.
Holiday made his first six shots this season - and three tonight - before missing an open three-pointer with 2:47 left in the half.
Aside from Richardson, the Suns were not the high-flying, quick-scoring team the NBA has seen in the first two weeks of the season. Richardson scored 19 points, making five three-pointers, in the first half. But Phoenix's main guys - Nash and Stoudemire - had combined for nine points on 2-for-7 shooting by halftime.
That would change after the break.
