AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Now in his second stint with the Detroit Pistons, some observers might think that center Ben Wallace is simply riding out the rest of his career with the team he won a championship with in 2004.

He proved yesterday against the 76ers that he is still capable of much more than some courtesy minutes during a farewell tour.

Ben Wallace puts defensive pressure on Thaddeus Young.

Wallace snared 16 rebounds, including seven off the offensive glass, blocked three shots and collected three steals to help the Pistons to an 88-81 win over the Sixers at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

Mainly due to Wallace, the Pistons were able to outscore the Sixers 27-13 on second-chance points and limited the visitors to just 26 points in the paint, compared to the Pistons' 42.

It also didn't help that for most of the game it seemed as if the Sixers had to settle for jump shots, not a great solution when you're not a very good outside-shooting team. Further complicating matters was the fact that after the Sixers grabbed their biggest lead of the day at 77-73 with 6 minutes, 2 seconds left in regulation on an 22-footer by Willie Green, they didn't get another field goal the rest of the way and were outscored by 15-4 to end the game.

"It was just one of those games that we couldn't seem to get it going, to get ahead once they got the lead," said Green, who came off the bench to score 13 points in front of hometown family and friends. "I thought we played a decent game. They outrebounded us [51-39] and got some easy baskets in the paint and that really hurt us.

"They just throw it up at the rim and play crash ball. The bigs kicked it out or were able to keep it and go back up and create fouls. We just have to try to do a better job with our team rebounding."

So concerned was Sixers coach Eddie Jordan about the rebounding disparity that he started Marreese Speights to start the second half ahead of starter Sam Dalembert. It was a move due to matchups, not because of anything Dalembert was doing, the coach said.

"It was more strategy than anything," Jordan said. "Even though Ben Wallace was getting a lot of rebounds, they came off the bench with Kwame Brown [seven points, eight rebounds] and [Jason] Maxiell and that's when they really got it going off the glass. I just thought if we could get Sammy coming in to match with those guys coming off the bench . . . ''

Speights again did a fine job off the bench, finishing with 15 points, second on the team behind Andre Iguodala's 24.

With 4:50 remaining and the score tied 77-77, Speights was cutting toward the basket on a side out-of-bounds play and collided knees with Pistons guard Will Bynum. He was taken out of the game, not to return, with what the team described as a knee contusion.

Speights' absence seemed to hurt the team, as almost immediately the Pistons scored three easy baskets in the paint, including two by Charlie Villanueva (16 points) and one by Ben Gordon (team-high 23 points).

After a fast start in which he made his first four shots, the Sixers did a good job of limiting good looks for Gordon. But when his team needed him, Gordon came through, scoring eight of Detroit's final 15 points.

"You just have to try to make him take tough shots," Green said of defending Gordon. "Anybody that touches the ball that much, gets that kind of volume of shots, you just want to make him take tough shots, make him do things that he doesn't want to do. Sometimes I don't know what that is . . . He hit some big-time shots for those guys."

Still, this one came down to paint play, and the Sixers weren't equipped with enough brushes.

"They've got some big bigs and they were hitting us before we were hitting them," Speights said. "They were overpowering us, but we still could have won it in the end."

Perhaps, had they not missed their final eight shots. And, of course, if they had battled a little better against Wallace, still one of the better inside presences in the league - even at 35.

Hold off on that farewell tour for now.

Thad has regressed, and will someone please tell him to can the finger roll and throw it down instead please. Also will you rebound the ball Thad instead of looking to be on the wing for the fast break...must get the rebound first...Sixers need more team rebounding since they do not have a dominant rebounder.

Here's what the cynical fan sees: *a GM who, a year ago literally said "fans don't pay tickets to watch defense; we want an uptempo team"; *a sub-.500 coach whose system has no apparent way to make use of a 31-year-old post player making 80 million *re-tread coaching staff *team defense that looks like it comes from a re-tread coaching staff *a soft player in Young who still won't dunk a ball, go hard to the hole to draw fouls, or rebound. He's a "core" player, apparently! *an undersized shooting guard playing point guard. Seems more willing to pass this year, though he's hardly good at it. Schooled by better point guards so far. *A talented young offensive player who has to fight for minutes with the guy with an 80 million contract. *a sturdy swingman in Iguodala who can't carry a mediocre team on his shoulders because he's not good enough to do so. Doesn't draw double-teams becuase he can't shoot outside. Also not good at beating players off the dribble. Best as a slasher, but we lack passers to make use of this talent. *A center who came to the game too late, whose learning curve is too significant. What he posesses in athleticism, he gives away in poor decision-making. *Nobody who's a monster on the boards *Nobody who's a lock-down defender *No starter who can threaten a team from the perimeter. *Poor shooters all the way around. Already we watch defenses packing it in on us. *Completely uninteresting personalities. *Cheap looking uniforms.

The uniforms is alright, I agree with everything else. But the uniforms are cool. I like 'em. For the first time in my lifetime the Sixers had the money to go out and get a top free agent in an offseason. What do we do with that money? Go out and get a PF less than a yr removed from ACL surgery. He wasnt 100% when we signed him, at any point last yr, and is still "coming along". He wont be 100% til he leaves. Shame, just a shame. Brand, no not Brand. Stiffanski has put us in a very bad situation. We could have been a huge player this offseason if we had just stood pat and it even looks like we're just a better team when Brand isn't on the court. Not Brand's fault, it's the GM's fault. We could be goin after D Wade, Bosh, Dirk, Amare, Lebron. Now we stuck. Why us man?

(1) Uniforms are better than what we've had in the past. Black uni's were especially bad. I really wish they would go w/Lakers & Celtics model and stick with the same uniforms year in and out no matter what. Hip-Hop has to go. (2) I agree with everything else. (3) This team is tough to watch. What is the incentive? There aren't many likable guys on this team and they don't have any identity. (4) They should just start Holiday at the point and get his some PT, see what he is. Not necessarily to "tank" the season but Sammy, Brand, Green etc. aren't the future. Let Speights, Smith, Holiday, Iggy, and Young play b/c they will either be here or traded. (5) Nice job on the headline. Best one I've seen in a while. Mostly the headlines stink.

Oh, and to Cooney and any other 76ers reporters who will listen: Stefanski and Snyder aren't listening to the forum posters. We need YOU FOLKS to ride management hard for delivering such a lousy product. Regarding the pointed headlines and articles...KEEP IT UP.

What a surprise Eddie Jordan is hired and we can't shoot, pass, rebound, or score. Wow is this a suprise to anyone. Brand is a waste of money just like Sammy. There is not one single player on this team that is a reliable scorer, no one single player on this team that is a reliable rebounder, not one single player on this team that is a reliable passer, and not one single player on this team that is a reliable shooter. WoW I think we all knew all this going into this season so while I am really annoyed at what I am seeing; I can't say it is a suprise.

Hobbes, you didn't leave anything left for me to say... Other than, I do think this team serves only as a tax write off for Mr. Snyder and Comcast as they cannot be making any significant profits from so bad a product. Is this it?? Always do well enough to get a marginal draft pick and then, use that pick to add another 6'3" to 6'7" tweener?? Are we allergic to adding height, excuse me, that can play?? Jason Smith, Sam Dalembert, Primoz Brezec = 21 ft of dead wood..

Hobbes: you are nasty, brutish, and short. Great post, except I like the uniforms. As for being a tax write-off for Snyder and Comcast, my guess is Comcast wants the Sixers as product for their cable system, given all the tedious hours of paid programming (and as seen with their move to either buy or buy into NBC) and Snyder uses the write-off, having essentially forced out Pat Croce, who actually cared about basketball. There is a real chance the Sixers will have the lowest average attendance in the league this year, which is sad for Philadelphians who still love the game and remember fondly the history of the team, but Comcast will have programming and Snyder his write-off. On the other hand, based on last season, the Sixers are better than at least ten other NBA clubs and will probably finish middle of the pack and make 7th or 8th spot in the conference playoffs. The real questions: what is the likelihood of improvement this season? How much of an impact will Jordan have as opposed to Cheeks and Dileo? Is Brand of any value to this offense? Can we get rid of Dalembert? Why, oh why, is Willie Green still here? Will Jrue Holiday get splinters from sitting on the bench all season? Should we have drafted Ty Lawson, instead?

@chuckw: I'm not here to defend Snyder but you have it backwards. Croce tried to stage a coup against Snyder b/c Croce thought he had juice after the initial success the Sixers enjoyed. Problem was, Snyder wasn't ready to leave his ivory tower and he quickly put Croce in his place. Say what you want about "Mr. Snyder", but he is a business man first and foremost. Croce tried to jack Snyder in Snyder's back yard and Snyder double-taped Croce behind the ear. Bottom line, don't F-with Snyder, he doesn't play those reindeer games.

And I quote Ed Snider the owner of the sixers. You don't need a great player to win a championship. You just need good role players. The sixers right now don't even have good role players. When it comes to fundamentals and simple basketball IQ's, the sixers are the worst in the NBA. Well one of the worse. You don't need to be a great athlete to be an intelligent one. The basketball intelligence on this team is bad. In order to run a princton offense, triangle offense, or any offense, you need intelligent basketball players. For get athleticism. It's the fundamentals and awareness on the court that truelly determines the success of a ball team. This roster is full of to many guys who don't have a good basketball IQ to be successful in this league. But not just the players, this entire organization isn't smart enough either. Players are a reflection of the organization that picks them. Stupid is stupid does. Any time the owner says you don't need great players to win a NBA title, well that shows his own stupidity and ignorance. You have to be stupid to say that and even more stupid to believe that. Princton offense can't make guys smarter basketball players. It can't compensake for lack of basketball IQ. You either have it or you don't. These players on the roster don't. The stupidity of this organization is the one constant through the years. Athleticism doesn't mean anything if you don't have the intelligence to understand how to use it no matter what sport you are in. Forrest Gump is a smarter athletic than some of the players on the sixers. If not all of them. Stupidity doesn't win championships. If you don't understand the game of basketball and how to really play it right, than you can't and won't win. Iggy says it best. The difference between a good basketball team and a medeocere one is the good ones defend the entire court. You need intellengence to defend. Not athleticism. INTELLIGENCE. Which this team doesn't have.

Hobbes EVERYTHING you said(except the uni's) were right on point! Iggy's a very good player, but being a top flight scorer isn't his game and management should realize this and put a player who can score with him. Speights is the inside scorer he needs but in order to justify the signing of Brand he's going to remain the back up 4.
