Sports in Brief: Local fighter KO'd in Round 3
Alfredo Angulo (17-1, 14 KO's) delivered a third-round knockout of Harry Joe Yorgey (22-1-1, 10 KO's) of Bridgeport, Montgomery County, last night at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn.
Angulo, a 2004 Mexican Olympian, claimed an interim junior-middleweight title.
David Haye (23-1) of Great Britain won the World Boxing Association heavyweight title with a majority decision over Russian Nikolai Valuev (50-2) last night in Nuremberg, Germany.
Four-time world champion Joel Casamayor won by unanimous decision over Jason Davis on Friday night in Las Vegas, with all three judges scoring the super-lightweight bout 79-73. Three-time champion Zab Judah stopped Ubaldo Hernandez in the second round of their welterweight bout.
GOLF: Phil Mickelson took a 2-shot lead over Tiger Woods and Nick Watney yesterday with a 5-under-par 67 after three rounds of the HSBC Champions at Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai, China.
South Korea's Bo Bae Song (65) had an 11-under 133 and a 1-stroke lead over Akane Iijima (64) and In-Kyung Kim (65) midway through the LPGA's Mizuno Classic in Shima, Japan.
PRO FOOTBALL: The Pittsburgh Steelers won't say whether safety Ryan Clark will play in Denver until tomorrow night. He is not expected to be in uniform.
Clark nearly died after a game in Denver two years ago because of a rare blood disorder that is aggravated by playing in high altitude.
Elsewhere. Free-agent cornerback Ty Law, who has been to five Pro Bowls, officially joined Denver, signing a one-year, $800,000 contract. . . . The Green Bay Packers placed offensive lineman Jason Spitz on injured reserve with a lower-back injury. . . . The Jacksonville Jaguars claimed safety Anthony Smith off waivers from the St. Louis Rams and placed cornerback Scott Starks on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. . . . The New Orleans Saints placed defensive tackle Kendrick Clancy on injured reserve with a knee injury.
TENNIS: Alexa Glatch and Melanie Oudin lost in straight sets to give host Italy a 2-0 lead over the United States in the Fed Cup final in Reggio Calabria.
Glatch lost to Flavia Pennetta, 6-3, 6-1, and Francesca Schiavone rallied after a two-hour rain delay to defeat Oudin, 7-6 (2), 6-2.
Roger Federer will play Serbia's Novak Djokovic in the Swiss Indoors final in Basel.
Federer defeated childhood friend Marco Chiudinelli, 7-6 (7), 6-3, in one semifinal. Djokovic rallied to beat Czech opponent Radek Stepanek, 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-2.
SKATING: Katherine Reutter of the United States won the women's 1,500 meters in the short-track speedskating World Cup event in Montreal, and U.S. star Apolo Anton Ohno took second in the men's 500, won by Charles Hamelin of Canada.
