THE PLAY: Designated hitter Hideki Matsui lined a two-out, two-run single up the middle off Pedro Martinez, giving the Yankees a 4-1 cushion in the bottom of the third inning.

THE SETUP: After the Phillies had halved the Yankees' 2-0 lead (on a Matsui homer) in the top of the third, Derek Jeter started a one-out rally with a single. Johnny Damon walked and Mark Teixeira was plunked by Martinez to load the bases. However, Martinez proceeded to strike out cleanup hitter Alex Rodriguez, bringing Matsui to the plate with two away.

THE AT-BAT: Matsui got into an 0-2 hole after fouling off a slider and a fastball and it looked as though Martinez would be able to get out of the inning unscathed. But a Martinez fastball caught too much of the plate and Matsui ripped it into centerfield, scoring Jeter and Damon and extending the Yankees' lead, which would eventually become 7-1.

THE STATS: Matsui had just four hits in 28 at-bats against Martinez in regular-season play (.143). However, after his two-run blast and two-run base hit, Matsui improved to 9-for-19 (.474) lifetime against Martinez in the postseason, with a combined two homers and six RBI ... Matsui tied a World Series record with six RBI in Game 6.
