If necessary, Phillies' Hamels wants to start Game 7

Hamels
Hamels

After the game last night, Cole Hamels stood at his locker and smiled sheepishly and said, "I've said some dumb things. I think everybody has . . . It's hard. It's hard to play baseball and talk sometimes."

After his loss in Game 3 of the World Series, the latest in a run of frustrating outings for the 2008 World Series Most Valuable Player, Hamels was quoted in an interview as saying, "I can't wait for it to end. It's been mentally draining. But, you know what, it's one of those things, a year in, you just can't wait for a fresh start . . . "

The effect in the town would have been seismic, if not for Game 4 taking the spotlight the next day. Still, in black and white, the words called into question Hamels' desire to pitch. It got to the point where Hamels went in yesterday to explain himself to Phillies manager Charlie Manuel. And then, with a small crowd of reporters around his locker, Hamels said he would love to start Game 7 against the Yankees if the Phillies get that far.

"I told him I want us to win Game 6 first," Hamels said. And when asked by reporters if he wanted to pitch Game 7, Hamels said:

"Of course. Who wouldn't want the ball in Game 7? That is the ultimate dream . . . I've always wanted it, will always take it dearly, always pitch to my last breath."

Hamels also said: "I went to Charlie just to talk to him, because that's who I am. I think he understands that. I just wanted to tell him my true thoughts and my thought process, that I'll never quit, that I'll never, ever quit. I want to play this game until somebody takes it away from me."

Hamels said he hadn't been able to sleep because of the controversy. When asked by reporters to explain what he really meant to say after Game 3, he did not really succeed. But he obviously felt it was important that he tell Manuel his side of it, and he did.

"I think Charlie knows me," Hamels said. "He's managed me for quite a few years. I think the only doubt it left in peoples' minds was the fans, and that hurts because I love the city of Philadelphia and I play as hard as I possibly can. I might not necessarily have the results that they hope but I know that if I go out there and do everything I possibly can, and in the end, if they see that I've left everything I possibly can out on the field, then I think they can respect that.

"Sometimes I might not say the best things or the smartest things. But I've definitely learned, and I'm learning, and I think I'll be learning for a long time."

Hamels said Manuel did not tell him that he would be the Game 7 starter, if it gets to that point. He said that wasn't what the meeting was about.

"I think he definitely does know who I am," Hamels said. "That was not what I ever intended. It definitely hurt, just for the way it came out. I think I was more shocked because I didn't even know what I said, or put out there, because it was not what I was thinking. It was one of those things where you talk and try to be as honest as possible and connect as much to people, and you say the wrong things, that you didn't really mean.

"I would never be here if I ever quit on anything. And if I was ever too tired to not go through with any decision, I would never be standing here. Ever."

J.A. Happ should pitch Game 7 and Hamels should have all winter to think about the stupid comments he made! In fact, the Phillies should trade that chump and try to land Halliday.

Sometimes Hamels is infuriating, sometimes immature and quick to lose his composure, but think back to the first few game 4 innings and remember how masterful he can be when his dome is not tilted...this young man has electric, mezmering stuff...try to remember last season and the fact that he was the man...with all the grit in that clubhouse, he will come around...don't throw out the baby because of one "dirty bath water" mis-statment...Hamels in that rare diamond in the rough not a "chump"...do you think the real Ernie Banks would have given up on him so arbitrarily??? NO WAY..Ernie would say "LET'S WIN TWO"...Go PHIGHTINS!...KILL THE EVIL DRAGON!!!

Hamels will make a fine starter somewhere else. No way he can stand the heat of the Philly fans after repeated meltdowns. Trade 'im away for the good of everybody.

All we ask of our team and our players is that they give all of their effort every time out. Speaking honestly, even mis-speaking in the heat of the moment, doesn't make Cole less of a player, rather more human. I'd love to see him start game 7 and have Lidge close it out for another parade, honestly.

Agree with E.Banks. Happ should get the start. As for Hamels?? Everyone heard him and what he said. His Season is over. Myers had the right to say what he said to Hamels. Tell him to go do another commercial.

Maybe the Phils should roll the dice with Happ in Game 7 (if there is one). But I'm not ready to give up on Hamels on long term. He's too talented. I think he needs a mental break. And developing a credible third pitch wouldn't hurt, either.

Hey guys, before you trade Cole Hamels, think back to last year. Were you in love with him at the time or not? This is a relatively young pitcher, with good talent and Cy Young award winning talent. Give him more time to mature. By the way, who would have traded Mike Schmidt for?

Please God No, not Cole Hamels in Game 7.

If we make it to Game 7, I want Lee to pitch. Don't care about the rest issue.

Hammels is finished this year. It would be stupid to start him if there is a game 7 -- as bad as sending in Lidge to save or hold. Having said that, a lot of good pitchers have bad years, so there is little sense tossing him out now.

I have no problems with Hamels getting the ball in game 7, if we get that far. He was pitching well before he (or the coaching staff) made a poor choice in Game 3 of going with the curveball too much when his fastball and change up were working. Happ could be the other choice, but he hasn't been throwing the ball great either and it could be tough for a rookie who's been in and out of the rotation to be put in that situation. Hamels has done it before and I like the way he came out and spoke this time. That’s a good sign, imo. Go with Hamels and have everybody ready.

Hamels will be fine next year as the number two on the team. I wouldn't start him in game 7 because I don't think he has it this year. That means Happ-a rookie but he gives you your best chance to win and what a story that would make.

Hamels' downfall began when he decided to be a celebrity instead of a ballplayer; we don't need Paris Hilton on the mound.

He had high apple pie in the sky hopes.
Keep Cole. Pitchers of his caliber are hard to come by. It was an off year that snow balled, he'll be fine. Once he starts winning again . . . all his deficiencies will subside. I believe in Cole!

Message to Cole Hamels from a real Phillies fan: Cole, we are behind you 100%. We know its been a tough year for you, and we are frustrated, just as you are. You and Brad Lidge are the biggest reasons why we ended our 25 year title drought in this town, and I for one haven't forgotten it. I have all the confidence in the world that WHEN we get to a Game 7, you will be ready to go and help us complete the greatest World Series comeback ever against the stinkin' Yankees! Yours Truly, A Philadelphia fan
