Riversharks hire Von Hayes as manager

"Mr. 5-for-1" is coming back to the Delaware Valley.

Von Hayes, acquired by the Phillies in 1982 from the Cleveland Indians for five players, has been named the manager of the Camden Riversharks, of the Atlantic League.

"I'm coming home," Hayes said. "It's great to be back in the South Jersey and Philadelphia area, and I'm extremely excited about managing the Riversharks this upcoming season. I'm sure we're going to have a great year."

Hayes managed the Lancaster Barnstormers in the Atlantic League last season and also has managed managed minor league teams in South Bend, Ind.; Modesto, Calif.; and Midland, Texas. He was named the California League Manager of the Year in 2004 and the Texas League Manager of the Year in 2005.

"We're extremely excited to have Von as our new manager for the 2010 season," Riversharks general manager Adam Lorber said. "Not only is he a local hero in the Philadelphia and South Jersey area, but he's an extremely accomplished baseball man. There is no doubt that he is going to be a great fit for the Riversharks."

From 1983 to '91 with the Phillies, Hayes hit .272 with 124 home runs and 568 RBI. He finished eighth in the National League Most Valuable Player voting in 1986, and made the National League All-Star team in 1989.

Hayes will be introduced to fans Thursday at 7:15 p.m., as part of a World Series Meet and Greet party at Campbell's Field. The event will be open to the public and there will be no admission. Reservations are suggested but not required (call 1-866-SHARKS-9).

The man who was traded for Manny Trillo, George Vukovich, Jay Baller, Jerry Willard, and Julio Franco never lived up to the hype.

ANGRY AL
There still must be something scummy about him if he did such a great job with all these minor league clubs and STILL couldn't gain employment with a regular mainstream team, not some independent, third-rate franchise.
