NCAA games coming to Phila.

The NCAA yesterday named Temple as host for first- and second-round games in the 2013 NCAA men's basketball tournament at the Wachovia Center.

The games will be played March 22 and 24, 2013. The application process for tickets will be announced later, a spokesman for the Wachovia Center said.

 

The Division I committee named three host cities for men's Final Fours: Houston (2011), New Orleans (2012), and Atlanta (2013).

AUTO RACING: NASCAR asked U.S. District Judge Graham Mullen to order a mental and physical examination on suspended driver Jeremy Mayfield to determine if he has a substance-abuse problem and/or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The filing in U.S. District Court in Charlotte, N.C., includes testimony from four people who say they witnessed Mayfield using methamphetamines.

NASCAR suspended Mayfield for failing a random drug test collected May 1.

Mayfield said the positive test result came from his mixing the prescription drug Adderall for ADHD and the allergy medication Claritin-D.

Renault escaped severe punishment for ordering former driver Nelson Piquet Jr. to deliberately crash, receiving only a suspended two-year ban from Formula One's governing body in Paris. The order was given at last year's Singapore Grand Prix to help teammate Fernando Alonso win.

PRO BASKETBALL: Michael Beasley rejoined his Miami Heat teammates for a voluntary workout after a monthlong stay in a rehabilitation facility in Houston to address substance abuse and other issues, the team said.

HOCKEY: New York Islanders forward Pascal Morency has been suspended for the rest of the preseason and five regular-season games after leaving the bench to start a fight in Thursday's game against the Calgary Flames.

Sean Avery of the Rangers was sidelined indefinitely after spraining his right knee during New York's morning skate.

TENNIS: Former top-ranked player Justine Henin, 27, will announce her return to competitive tennis today, two Belgian newspapers reported. She retired last year.

GOLF: Anheuser-Busch will not renew its sponsorship of the Michelob Ultra Open at Kingsmill in Williamsburg, Va., after seven years, causing the LPGA Tour to lose one of its marquee events.

NOTEWORTHY: Former Eagles running back Herschel Walker, 47, is starting a career in mixed martial arts. He said he has signed a multi-fight contract with promoter Strikeforce.

Former welterweight boxing champion Ricardo Mayorga of Nicaragua also is launching a career in mixed martial arts.

David Jason Stinson, a former Kentucky high school football coach acquitted last week in the death of a player, was cleared to return to the classroom in Jefferson County as a technical teacher and apply for coaching positions.

Temple's Tyler Witmer and Penn's Tobi Olopade were named Philadelphia Soccer Six players of the week.
